Nagaland Border Protection Force (NBPF), a group formed comprising members of various Naga tribes to ‘protect’ the border areas from land encroachment by Illegal Bangladeshi Immigrants, asked all Ralan Area landowners to reach their respective villages and occupy their land for joint harvest before November 5 failing which they would not be allowed to claim ownership of their lands, reports Nagaland Post on November 4. NBPF ‘commander’ of Wokha-Assam boundaries T. Yimto Yimchung said the decision was taken after a thorough assessment and observation of the situation in Ralan Area. He also added that NBPF would take over all the disputed lands and would pursue the matter by way of confronting All Adivasi National Liberation Army (AANLA) and Adivasis (a member of any of the aboriginal tribal peoples living in India ) illegally occupying the lands in Ralan Area.

Assam Rifles (AR) on November 5 arrested two militants and recovered the dead body of a suspected United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) cadre during a search operation carried out in and around Saring village in Mangkolemba sub-division in Mokokchung District of Nagaland, reports Nagaland Post. The arrested ULFA militants have been identified as Babon Teka and Preanjal Nath. The dead body, suspected to be the leader of the group, identified as Prakesh Baruah was recovered during the further search. According to official source, arms and ammunition including one 303 Rifle, seven 303 ammunition, one K-10, three magazine with 100 Resilient Defense Systems (RDS), 102 cartridges and 14 detonators were also recovered from the site.

Nagaland Post reports that a militant of Independent faction of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I), identified as ’lieutenant’ Prakash Bora was killed in an encounter with Assam Rifles (AR) at a jungle near Saring Village in Mokokchung District on November 5. AR also arrested two ULFA-I militants and also arrested an individual identified as Senti Longchar, owner of the house from which huge quantity of ammunition and explosive materials were recovered. AR recovered one Assault Rifle (K-10), one .303 rifle, one Pistol, large quantity of material for making Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), two hand grenades, two bombs and over 300 rounds of assorted ammunition. The arrested militants disclosed that ULFA-I was planning to target populated areas in Assam. The Sentinel further adds that ULFA-I militants were trained in explosive handling and that Prakash Bora is believed to be a kingpin of ULFA and was responsible for subversive activities in Jorhat, Golaghat and Sivsagar areas of Assam.

NBPF ‘chairman’ Limachan Lotha said that despite “maximum restrain not to use arms, particularly Ralan area, AANLA (Maoist) led by one ‘captain’ Kolsa intruded in Ralan area and started harvesting” in the field owned by Naga. NBPF led by ‘major’ Yimto Yimchung had enquired whether the Naga owners had asked them to harvest their field. However, Limachan said they were fired upon by AANLA and in retaliation, ‘captain’ Kolsa was killed. Kiumukum group of the Non Accordist faction of Naga National Council (NNC-NA) ridiculed the merger of ‘president’ and ‘general secretary’ NNC-NA Temjen Yanger and Hozheto Z Chopi under the banner of NNC-NA, which it said was critical to justify before the Nagas, reports Nagaland Post on November 27. The regional council authority of the NNC-NA (Kiumukam) said the merger was a mockery and termed as “just for their personal gain only and nothing for the cause of the Naga national movement”. Meanwhile, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) on November 26 expressed hope for an early solution to the vexed Naga political problem while iterating its stand on the integration of the Naga areas, reports The Telegraph. Nagaland Chief Minister (CM) T.R. Zeliang said that 17 years of peace talks between the Centre and the Isak-Muivah faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) are too long and that the Centre has set a time frame to resolve the issue. Zeliang said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state would send a positive signal to the people and urged the Naga factions to come together and pursue a solution. He also said that the Government would make another effort to revamp the Joint Legislators’ Forum (JLF).
