In a statement, the Isak-Muivah faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) strongly objected to India's decision to fence the borders between Myanmar and Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram on January 6, reports the Nagaland Post. In the statement, NSCN-IM said that such ‘artificial boundary fencing imposed upon the Naga people’ was against the will of the people and was gross violation of human rights. The militant group, Reformation faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-R), in a statement on January 9, opposed the proposed Pangsha fencing (in the border of India and Myanmar) by India and Myanmar Government in the Nagaland, reports the Eastern Mirror. One militant of Khaplang faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCNK), identified as ‘corporal’ Cheimang, was arrested from Mon Town in Mon District by Assam Rifles (AR) on January 10, reports the Nagaland Post. One .22 mm pistol along with ammunition and some other indoctrinatory documents were recovered from the arrested militant. The Assam Rifles (AR) arrested one Khaplang faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-K) militant, identified as Velasayi (35) along with arms at Jail Colony in Kohima District, reports The North East Today on January 11. Unidentified assailants hurled a crude bomb at the residence of Hokuto Zhimomi, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) polls, at Veterinary colony of Burma camp area in Dimapur District on January 12, reports the Nagaland Post. The Assam Rifles (AR), on January 18, arrested 13 militants of IsakMuivah faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCNIM) along MonTizit road in Mon District along with arms, reports Nagaland Post. Four AK56 rifles, two HK32 rifles, one MAMK 4 rifles, four pistols and a huge quantity of live ammunition apart from other warlike stores were recovered from the arrested militants. the National Investigation Agency (NIA), on January 18, conducted search operations at various Government offices in Nagaland that are believed to be funding underground terrorist organisations, including the Khaplang faction NSCN (NSCNK), reports The Hindu. Earlier, one militant of NSCNK identified as S. Khetoshe Sumi, who was arrested on July 31, 2016, revealed that different Government departments of the State pays illegal ‘tax’ to the militant groups. In a statement, the Isak-Muivah faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) on January 19, called upon all Naga groups to come together on a ‘single platform’ before the announcement of the peace settlement with the Central Government of India, reports The Times of India. The peace process started with a ceasefire agreement with NSCN-IM in 1997 and a final peace settlement had started gaining momentum after the Central Government of India signed the 'framework agreement' in August, 2015. National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) probe into institutionalized extortion rackets run by Naga militant groups in Nagaland has revealed that these militant formations were getting money allegedly from 14 State Government Departments, reports Indian Express on January 21. The news report names the Naga militant groups involved as the Khaplang faction of Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K), Isak-Muivah faction of NSCN (NSCN-IM) and Naga National Council (NNC).Sources said these Government Departments include the Directorate of Information Technology, Directorate of Soil and Water Conservation, Directorate of Irrigation, Directorate of Rural Development, Directorate of Urban Development, PWD, Roads and Buildings and Directorate of Information and Public Relations. “We have found documents that show that at least 14 Government Departments made regular payments to Naga groups, including NSCN-IM,” an NIA officer said. “We have seized receipts that show payments of INR 2 crore. Assam Rifles (AR), on January 23 arrested one Khaplang faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-K) militant, identified as ‘lieutenant’ Yantril Sangtam from Longkhim Town in Tuensang District, reports The Morung Express. Assam Rifles (AR), on January 29, arrested two persons, identified as Vizoto Angami, (40) and Supi Chaya Angami (35) from Medziphema Town in Dimapur District along with arms, reports Nagaland Post. According to the AR, one of the arrestees, Vizoto Angami is a member of IsakMuivah faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCNIM). Two unidentified civilians were killed when Police open fired to control a highly agitated mass in Dimapur town in Dimapur District on January 31, reports The Morung Express. Five civilians were also injured in the firing. While seven other agitated civilians were injure in Longleng District by Police firing.
