According to Daily Excelsior, security forces (SFs) shot dead three top militants of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) at Peer Gali in the Rajouri district on June 3. The militants were heading towards Kashmir from the Pir Panjal mountain when they were intercepted by the SF personnel and subsequently killed. The encounter was continuing till last reports came in as two more militants were holed-up in the area. Three AK rifles and a cache of ammunition, wireless sets, mobile phones, eatables and other items were recovered from the incident site.

A new recruit of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) was arrested by police from village Shadiwan under the jurisdiction of Doda police station in Doda district on June 4, Daily Excelsior reported. Official sources said Shabir Ahmed Mallah had recently been motivated by the LeT ‘district commander’ Mohammed Iqbal to join militancy. Police recovered one mobile telephone and incriminating material from his possession. Sources said Shabir Ahmed’s brother Mohammed Shafi was arrested by Jammu Police two years back along with some hawala money.

The Jammu Police on June 4 arrested three militants of newly formed outfit ‘Panj Pardhani Group’ along with a large quantity of arms and ammunition from Dumi Malpur in the Kanachak area along Jammu-Akhnoor road and foiled their plot to kill two religious preachers of Punjab—Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and Pyara Singh Baniyarawala, Daily Excelsior reported. Arms and ammunition recovered from their possession include one AK-56 rifle with two magazines and 150 rounds, five Chinese pistols with five magazines and 93 rounds. A large quantity of literature, written in Punjabi, including photographs of slain militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala, mobile telephones, diaries carrying telephone numbers of their contacts in different States and some other documents were also recovered from a car in which the three militants were travelling. They were identified as Malkeet Singh, Surjeet Singh and Harbans Singh. All three militants, who hailed from the Barnala district of Punjab, had collected a consignment of arms and ammunition from an unidentified smuggler at Akhnoor, who had received the consignment from across the border. The consignment of arms was reported to have been sent from Pakistan by Ranjeet Singh Neeta. Further, a ring leader of the Panj Pardhani Group, based in Barnala, has been identified by police on the basis of preliminary questioning of three militants.

Militants also decamped with two AK rifles from the incident site. Police suspected that the number of militants was between six to eight, with half of them being foreign mercenaries. The Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) reportedly has significant presence in the area. The Press Trust of India, however, reported that the killed personnel, including a Lt. Colonel and another officer belonged to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). They had gone on a survey at the Symthan Pass and were fired upon by the militants when they were returning to Kishtwar. The militants continued firing on their vehicle until all its occupants were killed.

The arrested militant had planned to carry out grenade attack on Handwara Police Station, according to Daily Excelsior. One hand grenade was also recovered from his possession. During questioning, Hajam revealed that he along with other LeT cadres were assigned the task of carrying out hand grenades attacks on different targets like Police Stations, public rallies in Handwara and Kupwara by their ‘commanders’ Abu Hurrera and Abu Wakas. Acting on the information provided by Hajam, Police also arrested three more LeT cadres along with two grenades from each of them at Handwara market, Chogal and Kulangam Crossing respectively. Troops on June 19 foiled a major infiltration attempt on Line of Control (LoC) at Salhutri in the Krishna Ghati area of Poonch district killing five suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants while two others managed to escape, reports Daily Excelsior. Official sources said troops of Krishna Ghati Brigade observed movement of a group of six to seven militants trying to intrude into Indian Territory from Rashid Post in Salhutri area at 12-noon. The militants, most of whom appeared to be foreign mercenaries, were asked to surrender but they started firing on the troops, who retaliated. Firing between two sides continued for more than three hours. Till the reports last came in, troops had killed five militants. Intermittent exchange of firing between militants and security forces continued till late night. Reports said Pakistan army was also reported to have fired some shots on Indian side. Sources said body of one of the slain militant was taken back to LoC by the militants while four other bodies were still lying close to LoC. Two AK rifles and a large quantity of ammunition, explosives and bags were lying near the bodies.
