Indian Army launched yet another major offensive against Pakistani troops at Bhimber and Battal sectors along Line of Control (LoC) between twin border Districts of Poonch and Rajouri killing six Pakistani troopers and injuring five on June 1 afternoon, reports Daily Excelsior. This was third fierce retaliatory action undertaken by the Indian troops exactly during past one month. Some of the Pakistani posts and bunkers were also destroyed in retaliatory firing by the Indian troops, sources said, adding that mortar shelling and firing by the Pakistani troops stopped immediately after Indian forces undertook retaliatory action. Pakistan also claimed that their one civilian was killed in retaliatory firing by the Indian Army. Sources also said that major counter attack against the Pakistan army, which was undertaken this afternoon from Bhimber and Battal sectors of Rajouri and Poonch districts, was necessitated to decimate Pakistani posts, which were raining mortars on Indian civilian areas and were also preparing to facilitate infiltration attempts into the Indian territory.

Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted on June 1, that Russia's "trust-based" relations with India -- which he described as one of its "closest friends" -- will not be diluted by Moscow's growing ties with Pakistan and other countries, reports NDTV. But at the same time, Putin sidestepped a question on Kashmir, and said "it is up to you" to assess whether Pakistan is fuelling terrorism in the Indian state. "But no matter where the threat comes, it is unacceptable and we will always support India in its fight against terrorism," he added. On a question if Russia will use its influence to get Pakistan to stop terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, he said, "We will always support India in its fight against terrorism. The number of local Kashmiri youths recruited by terror groups in the Valley in the first five months this year (2017) alone has more than doubled as compared to the whole of 2016, intelligence agencies cautioned the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (UMHA) on June 2, reports The Asian Age. This comes a day after Union Home Minister (UHM) Rajnath Singh said that infiltration of militants from Pakistan has dropped following the Army’s surgical strikes against terror launchpads in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) in September last year.According to a report by intelligence agencies, the security establishment has expressed concern over terror recruitments. While 128 locals joined militancy last year, “the figure could be between 260 and 300 till May this year alone.’’ Another important issue flagged by intelligence agencies and described as “alarming’’ was that the recruitment drive, particularly by Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), was not just limited to south Kashmir but extended to north as well as central Kashmir. One of the main reasons, sources said, for the sharp increase in locals joining the ranks of militant groups in the Valley was the sustained and aggressive campaign, including through social media, carried out by terror modules particularly after the killing of HM ‘commander’ Burhan Wani in July 2016. Intelligence agencies have also alerted that terror outfits were facing a severe shortage of arms and ammunition as security agencies have been successful to a large extent in checking smuggling of weapons from across the border. This, the report adds, could lead to an increase in incidents of militants snatching weapons from security forces in the days ahead and that most local Kashmir youths recruited recently would be used for this purpose. The report said, one of the main reasons for local youths getting lured by HM, as compared to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), the other two main terror outfits active in Kashmir, is that HM is largely a local group with most of its cadre and sympathisers from the Valley alone.

For second consecutive day on June 4, the National Investigating Agency (NIA) conducted simultaneous raids in Jammu and Srinagar to unearth the nexus of hawala (illegal money transfer) funding to separatists, Over Ground Workers (OGWs) and others to fuel militancy and unrest in the Valley even as the raiding teams were reported to have recovered foreign currency apart from yesterday’s (June 3) seizure of cash, gold and other items including documents, reports Daily Excelsior. The NIA has frozen bank accounts and lockers of some of the separatists and traders, whose houses and business premises have been searched in the biggest ever crackdown to unearth hawala and terror funding in the Kashmir valley from Pakistan and some other foreign nations during the past two days. Nearly 40 locations have been raided and searched since yesterday by large number of NIA personnel, assisted by the Enforcement Directorate sleuths with the protection of paramilitary and Police personnel.Sources said that Pakistan and its sponsored militant outfits, mainly Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) had not only used New Delhi and Haryana based hawala operators to pump money to the separatists, OGWs and other influential persons to keep the pot boiling in the Valley but they had also used cross-LoC (Line of Control) trade between Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) through Poonch-Rawlakote and Uri-Muzaffarabad routes to generate the funding.

Former Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) ‘commander’ Zakir Musa, in his first message as an al-Qaeda operative, released an audio recording on June 5 slamming Indian Muslims for not joining Islamic jihad for 'Ghazwa-e-Hind' (the final and last battle for the conquest of India), reports The Times of India. Two senior Jammu and Kashmir Police officers confirmed it was Musa's voice. Invoking the recent "atrocities" against Muslims in India, Musa reiterated that the war was not just limited to Kashmir. "It's a war between Islam and the infidel," he declared in his first direct address to Indian Muslims in an audio clip shared via Telegram and WhatsApp groups. Against a black al-Qaeda banner, with a world map added along with and two Kalashnikovs rifles emblazoned on two sides, Musa spoke in Kashmiri-accented Urdu. Recalling multiple instances of lynching of Muslims by cow-vigilantes, Musa shamed Indian Muslims for not standing up for the victims. In his rant against Indian Muslims, Musa said, "They are the most shameless Muslims in the world. They should be ashamed of calling themselves Muslims. Our sisters are getting abused and dishonoured and Indian Muslims keep screaming that 'Islam is peace'." "They (Indian Muslims) are the most 'beghairat qaum' (shameless community) who cannot speak up against oppression and injustice. Is this what our Prophet and his 'salafs' (followers) have taught us? They gave their blood during the wars and martyrdom for the honour of our sisters," Musa said. Referring to the historic Islamic 'Jung-e-Badr', he said, "They were 313 and ruled the world. We are crores now but only as slaves." Warning Indian Muslims, Musa said, "You still have a chance to stand up and join us. Come forward or it will be too late for you." Show cow vigilantes "the muscle of Islam and Muslim community", he said.

The militants, who tried to storm a CRPF camp in a pre-dawn suicide attack in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on June 5, intended a prolonged siege and extensive damage, Union Home Minister (UHM) Rajnath Singh said on June 6, reports Daily Excelsior. Giving the details of the attack in which four militants were killed while attacking CRPF’s Sumbal camp in Bandipora District, Singh said the heavily-armed “fidayeen” terrorists approached the paramilitary camp with the intent of breaching it. “The terrorists were heavily armed with automatic rifles, grenades and incendiary material such as petrol, and were carrying dry rations which indicate they intended a prolonged siege and extensive damage,” he said in a statement. The Home Minister said the group of heavily armed terrorists attempted entry by cutting the wire fencing and also forcing their entry by shooting at the sentry. “The sentries responded with alacrity and returned their fire. Heavy exchange of fire took place during which the terrorists lobbed more than two dozen grenades in an attempt to escape,” he said. However, Singh said, the Central Reserve Police Force, in cooperation with force from the adjoining Jammu and Kashmir Police camp shot dead all the four terrorists.

A HizbulMujahideen (HM) militant, who was seen in a video taken during the funeral of outfit ‘commander’ Sabzar Bhat last week, surrendered before authorities in Kashmir, Police said on June 7 (today), reports Daily Excelsior. Investigations revealed that he was Danish Ahmed, a resident of Handwara in the Kupwara District studying at the Doon P G College of Agriculture Science and Technology, Dehradun. “A few days back, video clips of an unidentified terrorist wearing a battle pouch with a grenade were in circulation on social media. “These video clips were clicked in Tral area by local media persons during the funeral of selfstyle terrorist commander Sabzar Bhat,” a Police spokesperson said.Danish was also found to have been involved in stone pelting incidents in Handwara during the 2016 turmoil. “He was picked up by the police but was let off after counselling in view of his career,” the spokesperson said. After Danish’s involvement in militancy was established, Security Forces (SFs) got in touch with his parents and impressed upon them the need to counsel their son to surrender. “His parents were convinced that if he surrenders, he would be dealt with fairly under law. Efforts made by security forces yielded results and Danish surrendered before police and 21 Rashtriya Rifles of army in Handwara,” he said. During questioning, Danish revealed that he had been in touch with militants in south Kashmir on social media and was persuaded to join them. “He was tasked by HizbulMujahideen commanders to activate some local youth in north Kashmir and make the region as militancy infested as the southern part of Kashmir. “However, after spending few days with the terrorists in south Kashmir, he realized the futility of joining militant ranks,” the spokesperson said. A case under relevant sections of law has been registered against Danish, he said. The case is being considered under the J&K Surrendered Militants Rehabilitation Policy.

India is not the only victim of Pakistan's "nurturing" of terrorism, it told the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on June 7, saying the effects of this are felt in south Asia and beyond, and that Pakistan should refrain from sponsoring terrorism against India, reports firstpost.com. In exercising its second right of reply (RoR) to a Pakistani statement, India said that Pakistan for years has "with complete impunity, channelised billions of dollars from international aid, to training, financing and supporting terrorist groups as militant proxies against it neighbours".We demand that Pakistan lives up to its public commitment to refrain from supporting and sponsoring terrorism against India," New Delhi told the HRC. There were about 450 ceasefire violations by Pakistan in 2016, and the number of terrorists killed in Jammu and Kashmir increased by 50 per cent over 2015. "Internationally proscribed terrorist entities and their leaders continue to thrive in Pakistan with state support, even raising funds openly, in flagrant violation of its international obligations," Alok Jha, counsellor (political) at the Indian mission in Geneva told the council."We would like to iterate that India is not the only victim of Pakistan's preaching, practicing, encouraging and nurturing terrorism. The deleterious impact of Pakistan's irresponsible and short-sighted approach of terrorism as State policy has started showing in other countries of South Asia and beyond. We demand that Pakistan lives up to its public commitment to refrain from supporting and sponsoring terrorism against India."

India, on June 11, launched another major offensive against Pakistan after latter’s Army targeted defence locations and civilian areas along Line of Control (LoC) in three sectors in twin border Districts ofPoonch and Rajouri and also activated International Border (IB) in Ramgarh sector of Samba District, reports Daily Excelsior. At least nine posts and bunkers of Pakistan Army were destroyed opposite Krishna Ghati and Nowshera sectors in retaliatory fire by the troops while Pakistan claimed civilian casualties on their side.Official sources said that heavy mortar shelling and firing by Pakistan Army on the LoC in Rajouri and Poonch Districts, which began late June 10 night and continued till June 11 afternoon, was a clear indication that troops across the LoC were instructed to keep pot boiling on the LoC. However, they said, the Indian troops, who were anticipating misadventures by Pakistan following the visit of Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa to the LoC, retaliated Pakistan shelling and firing very effectively. According to sources, at least nine posts and bunkers of Pakistan army have been razed to ground across Krishna Ghati and Nowshera sectors in retaliatory firing by the Indian troops. Pakistan claimed civilian casualties, both fatal and non-fatal, on their side. Sources didn’t rule out fatalities on part of Pakistan army in destruction of their posts but there were no exact numbers.Significantly, Pakistan Army activated three major sectors along LoC including Krishna Ghati, Bhimber Gali and Nowshera in Rajouri and Poonch Districts on June 11, just a day after General Bajwa visited Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) and some forward posts on the LoC, where he inter-acted with Field Commanders and jawans.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has approached Pakistan to provide details of four fidayeen (suicide) attackers involved in Uri attack of September 18, 2016, The Times of India reports on June 13. According to the sources in the anti-terror probe agency, a judicial request (letter rogatory) has been sent to Pakistan via diplomatic channels in which details of DNA samples, medicines, clothes, shoes, accessories and DNA of one of the four terrorists who was identified as Abu Anas by the agencies. Daily Excelsioradds that, on June 14, Army personnel, who have been maintaining strict surveillance all along the LoC in Rajouri and Poonch, targeted forward Pakistan army posts in Nowshera, Bhimber Gali and Balakote sectors, which were assisting the militants in re-establishing their launching pads on the LoC for making multiple intrusion bids in the next few days. “The Pakistan army and militants’ move was pre-empted by the Indian troops, who targeted Pakistani posts, which were helping militants to re-establish their launching pads along LoC. As the Pakistani posts came under intense shelling, they abandoned the plot to again set up the launch pads,” sources said, adding there were Intelligence inputs that the militants would make infiltration attempts together at various places to force their way. However, according to sources, effective retaliatory firing brought down by the Indian troops have thwarted Pakistani plot not only to again set up launching pads for militants along LoC but frustrate the planned multiple infiltration attempts inside the Indian territory.

Pakistani troops on June 15 started heavy mortar shelling and firing in forward areas of Nowshera sector in Rajouri District, reports Daily Excelsior. The Indian side gave befitting response to the shelling and firing, leading to heavy exchanges that continued till late night. Baba Khori, Sher Makri, Number, Sher Shalak, Kharli and Jhanghar areas in Nowshera sector were the worst hit by Pakistan’s mortar shelling from 1.45 pm to 3.50 pm and from 5.30 pm onwards. However, no casualties or major damage had been reported on the Indian side. Nearly 20 forward villages came under intense shelling from Pakistan side with 120mm and 82mm mortars in Nowshera sector. The civilian population in shelling hit villages remained confined to their houses throughout the day as the panicstricken villagers feared that Pakistan could target them anytime. “This is probably the very rare occasion when Pakistan army was directly pounding the populated villages with heavy 120mm and 82mm rockets and firing with automatic weapons. However, so far, there has been no civilian casualties in the fresh round of firing by Pakistani troops in Nowshera sector,” sources said but added that Pakistan army was trying to kill the civilians by directly targeting the residential areas.

Accusing Islamabad of using terror to destabilise Kashmir, the Indian Government on June 16 told the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) that Pakistan was misusing the UN platform to pursue its political objectives, reports Zee News. "Pakistan’s unsolicited and unwarranted comments pertaining to the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, which is an integral part of the Union of India, are factually incorrect and bear no relationship to reality," India said in a statement. "The foremost challenge to stability in Kashmir is the scourge of terrorism, which receives sustenance from Pakistan and the territories under Pakistan’s control," the statement said."Contrary to Pakistan’s claims, and in gross violation of UN Security Council resolution 1267, the designated terrorist entities and organisations continue to carry out their activities freely as reported in the local Pakistani print, audio-visual and social media," it said.India said that concrete evidence about cross-border encouragement and support for the protests in Kashmir has been handed over to Pakistan."Instead of working with a sense of purpose to address this issue, Pakistan resorts to short-sighted tactics to divert attention, as we have once again seen today," it said. "Pakistan keeps referring to UN Security Council Resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir. However, it very conveniently forgets its own obligation under these resolutions to first vacate the illegal occupation of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir," India said."The people of Jammu and Kashmir have chosen and reaffirmed their destiny repeatedly through India’s well- established democratic processes. Pakistan, on the other hand, has witnessed continuous degradation and weakening of its institutions," it said. "It has had no hesitation in using air power and artillery against its own people, not once but repeatedly over the years. It is high time for Pakistan to do some deep introspection. We would once again urge Pakistan to focus its energies on improving human rights situation and dismantling the terrorism infrastructure in Pakistan and PoK. This would go a long way in bringing peace and stability to the region and beyond," India said.

At both places - Matoo’s Khudwani village in Kulgam and Nasir’s family home in Heff, Shopian - the militants came armed and raised anti-India slogans. A senior Police officer said the presence of militant leaders at funerals of militants who did not belong to the same outfit, was a way to glamourise their movement. “It is a matter of concern for us,” said the officer. “By appearing at militants’ funerals, they are trying to attract more youths towards militancy and they have been successful sometimes.”

India's Ambassador to United Nations (UN) Syed Akbaruddin on June 21, urged the international community to 'ensure that the resurgent forces of terrorism and extremism do not find sanctuaries and safe havens anywhere and at any level', reports newsnation.in. Presenting India's arguments during the debate on the situation in Afghanistan, Akbaruddin stressed on the need of eyeing all terrorists with same lens, "We must not differentiate between good and bad terrorists, or play one group against the other.""The Taliban, Haqqani Network, Al-Qaeda, Daesh, Lashkar-e-Toiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad and others of their ilk are all terror organizations, many of them proscribed by the UN. They should be treated like terrorist organizations with no justifications offered for their activities," he added. In the backdrop of ever increasing tension between India and Pakistan on the issues of Kashmir and Balochistan, the Indian ambassador questioned the availability of the weapons and resources to terrorists in Afghanistan, "...where are these anti-Government elements getting their weapons, explosives, training and funding from? Where do they find safe havens and sanctuaries? How is it that these elements have stood up against one of the biggest collective military efforts in the world?"Akbaruddin also strongly condemned international community's lack of attention towards the crisis in Afghanistan, "Despite the worst possible violence witnessed in Afghanistan, this Council doesn't think appropriate to meet more often than at routine quarterly debates on the situation in Afghanistan. At times, the Council has even shied away from condemning some of the terrorist attacks in Afghanistan. Is it that they are far too many to keep track of? Is it because there is a threshold below which human lives lost to terrorism are not required to be addressed?"

Asserting that the war against the terrorism in Kashmir has entered into a decisive phase and the victory will be ours, Deputy Chief Minister, Nirmal Kumar Singh on June 23 said that common man in Kashmir is also sick of terrorist violence and wants to get rid of the same and once for all, reports Daily Excelsior. “Majority of people in Kashmir are sick of violence and want to get rid of terrorism,” Nirmal Kumar Singh said while addressing a seminar at Jammu Convention Centre in Jammu. He said there is a resentment over the killings by terrorists. Recently an Army officer and six cops including a SHO were martyred which was followed by martyrdom of a DySP and people have viewed it seriously, he added. He said Kashmiris realize that separatist leaders are sending their children outside the Valley in search of green pastures, good education and jobs while the children of poor people are paid INR 200 for stone pelting to destroy their career. “But situation is changing now rapidly as 400 to 500 children in Srinagar participated in Yoga Divas function on June 21”, he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 26 said the surgical strikes carried out across the Line of Control (LoC) proved that India would not hesitate to take the toughest measures to defend itself, while noting that no country in the world had questioned it, reports Indian Express. Addressing IndianAmericans at a reception in Virginia, Modi asserted that India has been successful in convincing the world about “the face of terrorism that is destroying peace and normal life” in the country. “When we talked of terrorism 20 years back, many in the world said it was a law and order problem and didn’t understand it. Now terrorists have explained terrorism to them so we don’t have to,” he said.Modi said the surgical strikes demonstrated that India, which normally follows the principle of restraint, can also defend its sovereignty and ensure its security when needed. “When India carried out the surgical strikes, the world realised the our strength and saw that while we exercise restraint, when the need arises, India can also show its strength and might in dealing with terror and protecting itself,” he said to thunderous applause from the diaspora.

Shifting its focus to the Indian subcontinent, global terror outfit al Qaeda has said it will target Indian security installations and leaders of Hindu "separatist" organisations, reports The Times of India on June 27. The outfit has released an elaborate document titled 'Code of conduct for Mujahideen in the subcontinent' detailing its objectives, targets, and do's and don'ts for members. "All personnel of the military are our targets, whether they be in the war zone or in barracks at their bases. Even the personnel on vacation are not exempted due to their battle against implementation of sharia," the outfit said in the document. This is an exact reproduction of the text, "Officers are a greater priority than soldiers. The greater is the seniority, greater is our priority to kill him. Those officers of the military who have the blood of our Kashmiri brothers on their hands are our targets," the outfit said. The document makes several references to Kashmir, and the opening note even refers to a resident of Uttar Pradesh (UP)'s Sambhal, Maulana Asim Umar, as the 'emir' or chief of the so-called al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).Indian intelligence sources said they were keeping a close tab on the development as it comes soon after former Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) ‘commander’ Zakir Musa floated a new outfit and openly acknowledged support from al Qaeda. The document also mentions that hostages should either be traded for a brother, given up for ransom or be killed, besides elaborating on targets in Pakistan, Arakan (Myanmar) and Bangladesh. Sources said the most worrying part was that the outfit had invited different groups fighting in the subcontinent to pledge their allegiance to what they refer to as the "Islamic emirate of Afghanistan", and stand up against intelligence agencies and the groups they sponsor.According to an official dealing in counter terror operations, al Qaeda is also trying to establish that its objectives and modus operandi are completely different from that of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS), its arch rival. "The document mentions that the Mujahideen will not attack common Hindus, Muslims or Buddhists and also not strike places of worship. This is in sharp contrast with ISIS which has been targeting mosques on priority," the official added.

The United States (US) State Department on June 26 designated Syed Salahuddin, the head of Kashmiri militant group Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), as a specially designated global terrorist, reports Daily Excelsior. The move comes just hours before the first meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington. As a consequence of this designation, US persons are generally prohibited from engaging in transactions with Salahuddin and all of Salahuddin’s property and interests in property subject to United States jurisdiction are blocked. As a senior leader of HM, the State Department said in September, 2016, Salahuddin, also known as Syed Mohammed Yusuf Shah, vowed to block any peaceful resolution to the Kashmir conflict, threatened to train more Kashmiri suicide bombers, and vowed to turn the Kashmir valley “into a graveyard for Indian forces”. “Under Salahuddin’s tenure as senior HM leader, HM has claimed responsibility for several attacks, including the April 2014 explosives attack in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, which injured 17 people,” the State Department said. Following the designation of Salahuddin as the global terrorist, the State Department in a notification said he has committed, or poses a significant risk of committing, acts of terrorism. Designations of terrorist individuals and groups expose and isolate organizations and individuals, and result in denial of access to the US financial system. Moreover, designations can assist or complement the law enforcement actions of other nations, it said.Meanwhile, India welcomed the US’ move. “India welcomes this notification. It underlines also quite strongly that both India and the US face threat of terrorism,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Gopal Baglay said.

The United States (US) Government’s decision to declare Syed Salahuddin a global terrorist would help in choking his movements and financing, Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi said on June 27, reports Daily Excelsior. Salahuddin, head of the Kashmiri militant group HizbulMujahideen (HM), was a “coward” who had “run away” to Pakistan, Mehrishi said. “What the US did is correct. He (Salahuddin) is a terrorist and he has now been declared so. This declaration by the US may probably help in impacting his movements and funding,” Mehrishi said. The US on June 26 categorised Salahuddin a specially designated global terrorist, a move welcomed by India which said it underlines quite strongly that both the countries face the threat of terrorism. Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar had said in Washington that the designation was “a strong signal coming out of the administration that it is committed to ending terror in all forms”. “We should take the step for what it is. It is fixing responsibility, highlighting the problem. There is a signaling out of it, it is focusing on a particular group and particular individual. None of us can really miss that message,” he said.

Separatist groups in Kashmir fear that categorising Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) ‘chief’ Syed Salahuddin as “a global terrorist” may “drift militancy in a different direction in Kashmir as the decision has the potential to shrink space for pro-dialogue groups, too”, reports The Hindu on June 29. In an interview to The Hindu, Hurriyat ‘chairman’ Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed apprehensions that the United States’ (US) move has “far alarming ramifications” internally in Kashmir. “Indigenous militant outfits here never linked up with global terror and worked around the Kashmir issue. My fear is that militancy can drift in a different direction as any wrong branding of forces will pave way for those forces who completely reject the international system. Unfortunately, the U.S. decision will be responsible for this.”Condemning the US’ stand on Salahuddin, who also heads the United Jehad Council (UJC) that comprises around 13 militant outfits and is based in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), the Mirwaiz said the Hurriyat commitment to dialogue and its position on seeking U.S. intervention “will stay the same.” “However, I fear the new U.S. position may shrink space for those canvassing for dialogue processes in the J&K,” he added. The Mirwaiz said hostility between India and Pakistan, and Srinagar and New Delhi had “reached a new level.” “The militaristic position taken by India on the Kashmir issue pushes south Kashmir to the brink of a nuclear war. In this situation, the U.S. has to take more pragmatic decisions.”

The Government of India on June 29 defended the United States’ (US) use of the term "Indian-administered J&K", saying that it only affirmed India''s position that Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) (HM) ‘chief’ Syed Salahuddin is involved in "cross-border" terrorism, reports The Times of India. "Use of term ''Indian-administered J&K'' affirms our position that Syed Salahuddin been involved in cross-border terrorism against India," said the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The MEA added that the US has used the same term before, in "yearly reports on terror including 2010-13". During the 2010-2013 period, the Congress-led UPA (United Progressive Alliance) was in power at the Centre. The MEA implied that the US, by using this term, clearly meant there are two parts to Kashmir, one of which is Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir, or PoK. And by acknowledging PoK, the US underscored that Salahuddin''s actions amounted to terror across the border. "India''s consistent position that the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India is well known," the MEA added.
