Two Army personnel were killed and six persons including four civilians were injured as Pakistan violated Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector in Baramulla District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on May 1, reports Daily Excelsior. Four Army personnel were injured in the CFA violations of which two of them identified as Havaldar Gokaran and Naik Shanker succumbed to their injuries. Two other injured personnel were identified as Havaldar Narayan Singh and Naik Pradeep Kumar. The four civilians were identified as Shanaza Bano (12), daughter of Bashir Ahmad, Thaira Bano (20), wife of Liyaqat Ali, Touseef Ahmad Khatana (4), son of Bashir Ahmad Khatana and Hussan wife of Husan Din Koli of Churanda village. An official said that the Army gave befitting reply and targeted the Pakistani posts inflicting heavy casualties on them. He said that posts were also destroyed.

An encounter broke out between militants and Security Forces at Rajwara forest area in Kupwara District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on May 1, reports Daily Excelsior. A joint team of Army’s 21 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), 9 Para, Special Operation Group (SOG) and 92 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Rajwar Handwara area in Kupwara District after input about presence of two militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) in the forest area.As the troops approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon searching party triggering an encounter. However, there were no reports of any casualties.

A Colonel and a Major were among five Security Force (SF) personnel killed in an encounter at the Chanjmulla area in Handwara area in Kupwara District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on May 2, reports Daily Excelsior. Two militants were also killed in the encounter. The Army personnel were leading a team to rescue civilians who were taken hostage by the militants, Police officials said. In the process, all the five security men, including two Army soldiers and one J&K Police Sub-Inspector (SI) lost their lives, they added. The identity and group affiliation of the slain militants is yet to be established.

Two unidentified militants were killed in an encounter with Security Forces (SFs) in Pulwama District of J&K on May 2, reports Daily Excelsior. SFs launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in the Dangerpora based on specific information about the presence of militants in the area, a Police official said. When the SFs were conducting searches in the area, the militants opened fire at them, leading to the exchange of fire, in which the two militants were killed. Police said identity and group affiliation of the slain militants are being ascertained.

Three paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed and seven others injured along with a physically-challenged boy was killed in Handwara area in Kupwara District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) as militants attacked their patrol party on May 4, reports Daily Excelsior.Militants attacked a patrol party of 92 battalion CRPF party at Wangam in Handwara area in Kupwara District in which two CRPF troopers were killed on the spot while several others suffered injuries and later one among them succumbed to the injuries. During search Police found body of a boyidentified as Hazmi Shafi Bhat, 14, son of Mohammad Shafi Bhat, a student of 7th standard, of Khipora village, around 400 metres from the encounter site. Sources said that three militants carried out the attack on the CRPF patrol party and they decamped with two weapons of the killedpersonnel.

Police said that on a specific input, a joint team of 46 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) 53 Battalion CRPF and Special Operation Group (SOG) laid a Naka(barricade) near Sheeri Police Station limits in Baramulla District, and one militant associate was arrested with hundred rounds of AK 47 and one grenade.The arrested militant was identified as Umer Mushtaq Khan from Sopore, presently resident of Srinagar, and brother of former militant Kaleemullah, who was killed in an encounter with SFs few years back.

Acting on an information about one suspected militant in Tanta village, Police, along with the Army and CRPF launched a joint operation in the area, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Mumtaz Ahmad said, adding during the operation, the militant tried to escape from cordon and was arrested after a chase. According to a spokesperson of the NIA, the chargesheet named Nisar Ahmed Sheikh, Nishad Ahmed Butt and Azad Hussain Bagwan, alleged to be Over Ground Workers (OGWs) of the HM terror group, and charged them with various provisions of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The NIA also named Osama-bin-Javid, Haroon Abbas Wani and Zahid Hussain in the chargesheet as accused who carried out the terror strike on November 1, 2018 in Kishtwar. Lance Naik Raj Singh Khatana of 10 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) was also killed in the operation while fighting during the encounter. There had been reports that another HM militant named Maqsood was also accompanying Bhat, however, during searches, his body wasn’t traced which indicated that Bhat was alone in the house and Maqsood might be hiding in Kishtwar or any other place. Police recovered one AK-47 rifle and a magazine from the possession of slain militant. Bhat was active since last year and his name had figured as one of the fabricators of the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which had targeted the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) convoy at Banihal in March 2019 but there was no damage as the IED didn’t explode. Bhat was also part of the group which had killed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) functionary, Chanderkant Sharma and his Personal Security Officer (PSO), Rajinder Singh, inside Kishtwar Hospital in April 9, 2019. The arrested militants were identified as Aabid Hussain Wani, Zakir Rafiq Bhat, and Javid Ahmad Dar. Kupwara Police along with 28RR and 162Bn CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in the area. During the search operation the militants started firing on the search party. Security Forces (SFs) persuaded them to surrender and after a brief shootout all the three were arrested alive during the operation. Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from their possession. Preliminary investigation revealed that the trio was in contact with their handlers across via social media, who motivated them to pick arms and join militancy.

Security Forces (SFs) including 34 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Kulgam Police cordoned off Damhal Hanjipora area on specific inputs about the presence of militants in the area, trapped two militants in the village and asked them to surrender. However, the militants opened fire, triggering an encounter in which two militants were killed. The slain militants have been identified as Adil Ahmad Wani alias Abu Ibrahim and Shaheen Bashir Thokar, both residents of Shopian District. According to information, a white Santro fitted with IEDs was on the move in Pulwama with plans to enter the highway to target a security convoy. The suspect car was intercepted at a checkpoint on May 27 night and signalled to halt which it did not, leading to the Security Forces (SFs) opening fire.A search of the vehicle later found a container packed with explosives. This container itself weighed around 50 kilograms. Later on, the nearby area was vacated and then destroyed the car in a controlled explosion. Police believe the fidayeen(suicide squad) plot to target the SFs or their installations was a joint venture of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM). Inspector General of Police (IGP), Vijay Kumar, said one Adil and Waleed Bahia, who worked for HM and JeM respectively, and two others were believed to be part of this foiled terror attempt. “Over the past year, the security forces have neutralised commanders, including Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGuH) founder Zakir Musa (killed in May 2019), top JeM‘commander’ Qari Yasir (January 2020), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)/The Resistance Front (TRF) ‘commander’ Asif Ahmad (April 2020), AGuH leader Burhan Koka (April 2020) and Hizb deputy commander Junaid Sehrai (May 2020).
