Two women, identified as Shukuntla Devi and her daughter-in-law Poli Devi, were killed in Challyari Village of Samba District and 16 others including two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and 14 civilians were injured in border area as Pakistan Rangers violated ceasefire and fired mortar shells in civil areas along the entire International Border (IB) from Kathua to Akhnoor (Jammu District), reported Daily Excelsior on October 8. Meanwhile, nearly 20,000 people including about 7500 alone in Hiranagar Sector (Kathua District), have deserted their houses in forward areas on the IB from Hiranagar to Akhnoor, and taken shelter in safer locations identified by the administration for them. Authorities were in the process of identifying more locations in safer areas to accommodate the people as they were anticipating more migration from the border villages due to continued shelling and firing from Pakistan side, which has so far taken eight lives of civilians including five women and left scores of others including Army and BSF personnel wounded. The BSF troopers retaliated effectively at all the places with equal caliber of weapons. Pakistan side, according to available reports, has suffered extensive damage in retaliatory firing by the BSF. Pakistan has claimed that their several civilians and Rangers were killed and there was heavy loss of infrastructure and property on their side of the IB. Heavy exchanges were going on till midnight tonight when the reports last came in.

Police arrested a suspected militant guide who acted as an Over Ground Worker (OGW), identified as Wali Mohammed (65), on the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch District, reports Business standard on October 10. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shamsheer Hussain said, "As of now, his interrogation is at the initial stage. Only after sustained interrogation will we be able to comment about the outfit he worked for and what his anti-national activities have been. OGW elements, especially the ones which stay close to the LoC, pose a bigger potential threat as compared to OGWs in the hinterland. His (Wali Mohammed) native village is very close to the LoC, from that point of view I believe this man could have caused a lot of damage."

The National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) probe into the Burdwan blast (in which two suspected militants were killed and another person was injured on October 2 in Khagragarh area in Burdwan District of West Bengal) is pointing to a bigger plot extending not just to neighbouring Assam, but also to Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) and the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, reports The Times of India on October 12. The NIA has, based on leads gathered from the women arrested from the Burdwan blast site, picked up a suspect from J&K, a construction worker belonging to West Bengal. The J&K suspect, to whom calls were made from the SIM cards seized from Rajira Bibi, wife of militant Shakil Ahmed killed in the blast, was found to be in touch with two other suspects in Birbhum District of West Bengal. The NIA is now on the lookout for the duo. An official said that “Phone records reveal that they had contacts in almost all the major megacities, also in South India. We will have to verify the antecedents of each and every contact. Six of the Assam-based suspects who were in touch with the two men killed in the blast have already been arrested.”

Two brothers, identified as Surjeet Kumar (38) and Som Nath (50), were injured as Pakistan Army violated ceasefire along the International Border (IB) in entire Arnia Sector of Jammu District on October 12, reports Daily Excelsior. However, some of the people, who were still putting up in their houses in Arnia town, fled to the relief camps after two civilians were injured when mortar shells fell inside their houses. Sources said several mortar shells landed inside the abandoned houses in Arnia town and border villages causing extensive damage to them. Apart from civilian areas, about 15 Border Security Force (BSF) posts were targeted by the Rangers in Arnia Sector and adjoining areas of RS Pura. The BSF gave befitting reply to the Rangers; rest of the IB remained calm for third consecutive day. There were no reports of any shelling or firing by the Rangers in Hiranagar, Samba, Ramgarh, Kanachak and Pargwal Sectors on the IB, which had earlier witnessed intense shelling and firing from Pakistan side.
