The Andhra Pradesh police recovered huge quantities of ammunition from the left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the Communist Party of India, United States of India (CPUSI) after an encounter at the Addagutta hillocks in the Venkatpur mandal (administrative unit) area of Warangal district on September 1. Official sources said that the encounter occurred when a police party undertook combing operations following information that CPUSI Naxalites were holding a meeting there. The Naxalites managed to escape after the encounter. Police recovered 270 live rounds of SLR, 350 rounds of .38 revolver and one magazine of 9 mm carbine, medicines, provisions and the cooking vessels.

Villagers of Gundampally in Warangal district chased PWG Naxalites and reportedly forced them to release an abducted leader of the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Police sources said eight Naxalites belonging to the Narsampet Area Committee raided the house of a local TDP leader Bitla Ramchander and took him to the village outskirts on September 2-night. On seeing the Naxalites abducting Ramchander, his relatives and other villagers chased the Naxalites and caught hold of one of them. The Naxals opened 12 to 15 rounds of fire into the air. However, the villagers continued the chase and forced the Naxalites to release the TDP leader.

Speaking to media persons, the State Home Secretary, J Tubid said, "the new policy will be more lucrative than the previous one". Official sources maintain that the response to the April 2001 policy was very poor and only a few Naxalites surrender under that scheme.

11 police personnel and a civilian were killed in a landmine blast triggered by left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the People’s War Group (PWG) and the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC), in a joint operation, in the dense forests of Kaimur range in Rohtas district of Bihar on September 8. The Naxalites also took away six rifles, a revolver and a large quantity of ammunition. According to media reports, the vehicle carrying 12 persons was on its way to Tilauthu when it exploded killing all of them on the spot. A combing operation has reportedly been launched with the assistance of Central para-military forces after sealing off the district borders.
