According to Indian Express, after receiving intelligence reports that cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) are planning to blow up railway installations, security has been tightened in Bihar. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel frisked passengers and checked their luggage with bomb detection devices, and stepped up patrolling of platforms as a part of the drill. Officials said a high alert was ordered since there was information that some anti-social elements from neighbouring Nepal had sneaked into the city.

Armed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres shot dead a Communist Party of India-Marxist-Leninist (CPI-ML) activist at Manfar village in the Gaya District in the night of January 3, Police sources said, reported The Hindu. An alert has been sounded in the Eastern and East Central Railway (ECR) zones after intelligence inputs suggested infiltration of Taliban-trained suicide squads into Bihar and in metropolises like Kolkata, official sources said on January 4, reports Times of India. Senior divisional security commissioner of the Railway Protection Force of East Central Railway N.K. Sinha in a note to superintendents of railway Police in Bihar, informed of the inputs suggesting infiltration by suicide squads into Bihar and metropolitan cities including Kolkata, they said. The copies of the letter were available with superintendents of railway Police at Patna, Bhojpur, Buxar, Jehanabad, Nawada, Gaya, Nalanda, Lakhisarai, Jamui and Begusarai.

The Hindu reported that Police arrested two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres after an encounter in the Kachwar village of Rohtas District in the night of January 5. Acting on a tip-off, Police cordoned off an area at Kachwar where the extremists had assembled to plan a crime, they said. On seeing the Policemen, the Maoists fired leading to the encounter, in which both the sides exchanged few rounds of fire. 11 detonators, two kg of fuse wire, naxal literature besides a medical kit were recovered from the incident site, Police said. Meanwhile, IANS on January 6 quoted Rohtas Superintendent of Police Vikas Vaibhav as saying, "Fourteen suspected Maoists were arrested by a police team from Kachwar village."

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist)-infested States, including Jharkhand and Maharashtra, have set up a Special Task Force (STF) in their bid to jointly tackle the Maoist problem, Director General of Police of West Bengal Bhupinder Singh told PTI. West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and some other Maoist-hit States have selected 30 officers for the STF to deal with the Maoist problem, he said. The 30 selected officers had undergone a month-long training programme at Ghatsila in Jharkhand. Some foreign army officials, who have experience in tackling guerrilla warfare, also imparted them training, the Police officer said. Of the 30 officers selected for the task force, four are from West Bengal, the officer said, adding, "The force would be named soon and it will be pressed into action as and when the training programme is completed."

Bihar Government sent 428 Police Personnel, from constables to DSPs, to different Central Police organisations for specialised training in jungle warfare, weapon tactics and counter insurgency and commando operations, reports Times of India. While some of them have returned trained, most of them are still being trained. "After all of them return, the Bihar Police would have a good strength of commandos and we can think of forming our own ATS [Anti Terrorist Squad]," said ADG (headquarters) U.S. Dutt. In fact, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has advised all the States to form an ATS to take on terrorists or even Communist Party of India –Maoist (CPI-Maoists) as and when required. The State has currently 700 officers and personals deputed in the Special Task Force (STF), an elite battalion of the Bihar Police which has specialised in anti-Maoists operations as well as overpowering hardcore criminals operating in different Districts.

PTI reports that armed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres on January 10 attacked a Bihar Military Police (BMP) camp in the Bhagalpur District and injured four BMP personnel before looting arms and ammunition, Police said. Over hundred Maoists swooped down on the BMP camp near Chanan River in Akbarnagar, fired bullets and injured four personnel guarding it. The Maoists looted four self loading rifles, two machine guns, some ammunition and two grenades, Police said, adding, they managed to escape in the dark after the brief attack. Acting on a tip-off, Police raided a house at Paharpur-Kharagpur village and arrested the extremists. The explosives were found in a bus, coming from neighbouring Rohtas District and heading for Ranchi, parked at the Ramabad bus stand under Town Police Station of the District. The detonators were kept in 50 boxes of 25 explosives each. “On being tipped off, police swung into action early on Thursday morning and seized around 1,250 detonators from a black bag in a bus parked at a bus stand. The possibility that the consignment was meant for the Naxalites [left wing extremists] could not be ruled out going by the nature and quantities of explosives seized,” said Nishant Kumar Tiwary, Superintendent of Police (Aurangabad).

The special operations group of the Special Task Force (STF) arrested a top Maoist and member of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) zonal committee Subodh Singh alias Anandji alias Divendu Kumar Singh from a house in the Kankerbagh area of Patna late in the night of January 15. The STF Superintendent of Police (SP) Prakash Kumar Sinha told Times of India that an amount of INR 18 lakh cash and a pen drive were seized from the arrested Maoist. Sinha said the pen drive had financial details of how much money the banned outfit collected as levy from different sources and how the money was spent. Five CDs and five mobile phones were also seized from him, he added. The SP said Subodh had collected INR 1.23 crore as levy between September 2008 and November 2009. Of these, INR 70 lakh had been spent. The pen drive also carries important information and decisions taken at different zonal committee meetings of the Maoists apart from the video clippings of meetings and training programmes. Subodh was also in-charge of the outfit's students' wing, the Democratic Students' Union. He was given responsibility to introduce reforms in the working of the Maoists' Magadh Zonal Committee.

During interrogation, Rajendra had revealed the name and addresses of both the arrested Maoists. The Darbhanga Superintendent of Police (SP) M. R. Naik on January 18 said both Ram Chatur and Shankar were arrested in connection with a case lodged by Avinash Yadav, a contractor responsible for construction of a road in this District.
