Chhattisgarh Police arrested Subhash alias Aitu Kursa, the Darrekasa dalam (squad) ‘commander’ of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), along with an associate from Dongargarh in the Rajnandgaon district on July 3, reports The Hindu. Police also raided several places based on the information revealed by Aitu and recovered two AK-47 rifles, two self-loading rifles, two shot guns, 150 gelatine sticks and a wireless set. Inspector-General of Police, Giridhari Nayak, said the weapons were looted by Maoists after killing seven police personnel in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra in 2005. "Aitu is a big gun. He was a terror icon in Chhattisgarh as well as in Maharashtra and sneaked into Dongargarh a few days ago from his forest hideout in Bastar, probably for medical treatment," an unnamed police official told IANS. "Aitu was involved in several offences, including an attack on a police party last year in which several policemen, including a DSP, were injured and another attack in which a train engine was set afire at Darrekasa," added the Rajnandgaon district Superintendent of Police, P. Amit Kumar.

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) has reportedly adopted the latest technology in their attempt to strengthen their armed struggle. Report said that they have launched a publicity campaign by circulating a one-hour documentary on their "military successes" in the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh. The Hindu reports that Video Compact Discs containing the documentary is in circulation in Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and other States. The documentary not only shows the preparations of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA), the military wing of the CPI-Maoist, cadres but also live footage of the raid on the Murkinagar police outpost in the Bijapur district on April 16, 2006. The footage further shows the ease with which the PLGA fighters mounted the attack and overran the police camp amid gunfire and the crackle of wireless sets used by them to coordinate the movement of their assault teams.

According to The Hindu, the Union Minister of State for Home, Sri Prakash Jaiswal, stated on July 13 that efforts to tackle the Maoist insurgency were lacking in Chhattisgarh. He said that the State was not getting its police personnel trained adequately to tackle the problem and it was a matter of concern that many Central Reserve Police Force personnel and some police personnel were killed in the recent Maoist attack on July 9 in the State. Citing the example of Andhra Pradesh, Jaiswal said that Chhattisgarh should take a cue from Andhra Pradesh, where the problem had been contained to a large extent. According to him, a massive development initiative, launched by the Andhra Pradesh government in the Maoist-affected regions had served as an answer to the problem of left-wing extremism.
