The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) have introduced horses in insurgency hit conflict zone of Bastar in Chhattisgarh to turn their guerrilla warfare more effective, intelligence report said, reports The Asian Age on March 7. A senior Police officer posted in the region disclosed on March 6, that Maoists, mounted on horses, were seen ambushing Security Forces (SFs) at Chareli under Mirtur Police limits in Bijapur District on March 3, leaving two Policemen dead. Two Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) jawans, Budharam and Gabbaram Kashyap, claimed to have seen Maoists opening fire on them from AK-47 rifles and other sophisticated weapons while riding horses in the forest area. The officer said, intelligence earlier tipped-off on Maoists’ move to upgrade guerrilla warfare tactics to make it mobile and deadly. There are reports of rebels receiving training on the new warfare tactics in Abujhmaad in south Bastar District of Narayanpur, in which horses were used. “It appears the rebels have taken a leaf out of Chambal robbers’ strategy of ambushing security forces riding horses,” he added.

Union Home Minister (UHM) Rajnath Singh told Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) on March 14 that “unprecedented success’’ by Security Forces (SFs) led to “uneasiness” among Naxal [Left Wing Extremists (LWEs)] groups, reports Asian Age. UHM Singh told that improved efficacy of the SF is evident from the fact that the number of Leftwing extremist killed increased by 150 per cent in 2016. Similarly, surrenders and arrests registered a combined increase of 47 per cent over 2015. In 2016, SFs arrested 779 Naxals while 1,198 surrendered and 135 were eliminated. In 2016 there were 67 per cent encounters and exchange of fire that resulted in neutralization of LWE cadres as against only 36 per cent in 2015.Mr Singh said sustained operations by the security forces ensured that South Bastar districts saw a considerable fall in violence in 2016 — 252 incidents, as against 326 in 2015.

Security Forces (SFs) destroyed a solarpowered printing press installed by the Communist Party of IndiaMaoist (CPIMaoist) on a mountain top in a remote forest of Madopara in Sukma District on March 25, reports New Indian Express. The printing unit was reportedly used to publish documents, statements and other publications of the banned organization. “During a search operation, the forces found a small printing press set up, powered by portable solar panels. Some printed documents and other publications of the Maoists were traced at the location. This is the first time that the police have found out such a setup used by Maoists,” said a senior Police officer. Acting on a tipoff about the location of Maoist leaders, a joint team of District Police Force and the District Reserve Guards (DRG) launched a search operation and reached the area. “The rebels, after being cornered, had opened fire on the troopers. There was exchange of fire following which the ultras fled. The forces further continued their movement and found the printing press unit, heavy batteries and solar plates on the mountain”, the Police said.

John Szlazak, a Canadian national who went missing from Sukma District on March 27, is safe, Police stated in the evening of March 29, reports The Pioneer. Szlazak, who was on a bicycle expedition from Mumbai to Bastar, was allegedly held by lower-rung Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in Singamadgu village under Chintagufa Police Station limits of Sukma District, Police said. “He is safe. He is reported to be in Singamadgu village area with ‘Sangham’ (local Maoist group) members,” Sukma, Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Meena said. The officer said the Canadian national hadn’t been taken hostage, but it seemed to be “a case of communication gap.”Police further said, the villagers and Sangham members came across Szlazak in the evening when he was passing through Singamadgu and questioned him as he was carrying camping equipment, food, etc., and suspecting him to be a ‘Police informer’. As they couldn’t understand what he was saying because of the language problem, they didn’t allow him to proceed. “The locals have informed us that he is safe and likely to reach some safe destination by Wednesday (March 29). We have sent some local men to tell villagers that he is not connected to security forces,” Meena said.
