A large number of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres stormed the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) Bacheli iron ore mines under Bacheli Police Station limits in Dantewada District and set on fire its conveyor belt after triggering a blast on May 4, reports The Hindu. The incident took place in the forested hills between iron ore deposits number 11 and 5 and has hit the transportation of iron ore in the area, Kirandul Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) M Z Baig said. As per the Police, the attack was executed by Maoists as a part of their two-day bandh (shut down strike) call on May 4 and 5. in a bold initiative, the tribals of a village panchayat (village level local self government institution) in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma District have decided to oppose Maoist atrocities carried out in the name of people’s movement and devise their own efforts to prevent violence by the Maoists, reports The Hindu on May 6. Armed with bow and arrows and other traditional weapons, youth in the area can be seen patrolling the peripheral areas of their villages throughout the night to ban the entry of Maoists. The practice started two months ago in Kumakoleng and Nama villages that are under Kumakoleng gram panchayat located about 22 kms from Tongpal Police Station on the National Highway- 30 which connects Jagdalpur to Sukma. “We were disturbed with the Maoists’ act of obstructing development which had resulted lack of power supply and no proper road connectivity in our villages. In the name of police informers, innocent villagers have been killed,” Aayta Karma, a resident of Nama village, said. “Braving Naxal threats, the youth from these two villages have decided not to allow anymore violence in the area. Now we want development and peace,” Karma added. “While patrolling, youth come face-to-face with Naxals twice, but on both the occasions the ultras fled after facing strong opposition from us,” he said. “Villagers from Kumakoleng have requested us to set up a police camp in their area which is quite in the interior. We have assured them to think over it. As of now, we have stepped up patrolling in the region to ensure security to them,” Sukma Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Santosh Singh said.
