Bodies of four villagers killed by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were recovered from a forest in the Aaded village of Bijapur District on September 4, reports PTI. The extremists had attacked Kandulnar, Gudipal and Aaded villages in the District on September 2 and had abducted four villagers, Anganpally Lakshmayya, Vasamchandru, Anganpally Buccha and Anganpally Jeetu, the Superintendent of Police Avinash Mohanty said. Villagers found their bodies in the forest and later reportedly informed the Police. While Buccha and Jeetu were shot dead, other bodies were found with throats slit. “Police had arrested two top Maoists from this area two months ago. The rebels suspected that the four were responsible for tipping the police off which led to the arrests,” said Avinash Mohanty, adds Times of India.

The Chhattisgarh Government on September 2 placed a demand for grant of INR 94.22 crore from the Central Government to develop educational facilities in the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist)-affected areas, ANI reports. According to State Government sources, Chief Minister Raman Singh put the demand before the Union Tribal Affairs Minister Kantilal Bhuria. He also submitted details of assistance anticipated by the State Government to Bhuria, sources added. Singh informed Bhuria that Chhattisgarh needed central assistance mainly for construction of some 218 ashram schools (residential schools where all needs of the students will be looked after by the State Government), sources further added. Maoists have reportedly attacked many of the ashram schools in the Bastar region in the past claiming that they blow up the school complexes because they provided shelter to the forces involved in anti-Maoist operations. State Government is also reportedly looking for assistance to the programmes of job-oriented training to the unemployed tribal youths and constructing houses for the tribals.

"After Raju was killed, his accomplices tried to flee but we managed to arrest them," he said. Police arrested Deva, Bheema, Radhe and Vinod. According to Mishra, Vinod is a school student, who was allegedly abducted from Jangla village by the Naxals.

A youth was killed by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in the Tunder village on September 12 after refusing to go along with them, ANI reported. “Maoists went to Tunder village and forced the village boys to go with them. They could take two boys with them but the third one, Manglu, resisted. He did not want to go with them. In retaliation, the Maoists punished him by shooting at him. They took the rest of the boys for training,” said Bastar Superintendent of Police P. Sundar Raj. He further said that following a spate of incidents being reported from the area, the Police would initiate a campaign urging villagers to stand up against Maoists efforts to recruit village boys. “We appeal to villagers that if Maoists forcefully take their boys with them, the villagers must resist this collectively. We are starting a campaign to create awareness on this,” Raj added.

According to the report, the SF personnel raided a Maoist camp located at Palachalam, 600 kilometres south of State capital Raipur, under Kisteram Police station area in the evening of September 17. Additional Director General of Police Girdhari Nayak said that the SF personnel surrounded the area from all corners and then attacked the camp. The extremists retaliated and a gun battle ensued. Nayak added that 10 dead bodies of the extremist were recovered and the SF personnel destroyed an arms factory being run at the hideout. During the gunfire, the CoBRA assistant commandant was killed on the spot, while four personnel were injured. This was CoBRA’S, the elite anti-Naxal (left wing extremist) wing of the Central Reserve Police Force, maiden operation in Chhattisgarh and it involved some 600 personnel, so far the biggest movement of forces in any operation against the Naxalites in the State. Denying that the operation was a part of the Union Government’s larger plan of launching a massive anti-Naxalite operation across States, the Inspector General of Police (headquarters), R.K. Vij, told The Telegraph, “It was part of the State’s ongoing offensive against insurgency.”

Hindustan Times quoted Bastar region Inspector General of Police T. J. Longkumer as saying, “It is difficult to give the exact figure. But the casualties among Maoists are much higher than we initially believed.” The reports said that the SF personnel, comprising around 650 Policemen, on September 17 found and destroyed an arms manufacturing base of the Maoists as part of its Operation ‘Red Hunt’ in the Palachalma forests near the State’s border with Andhra Pradesh. On its way back on September 18, the team found and attacked another Maoist base. Two helicopters were used in the four-hour-long encounter. The assault was taken up on September 16 when the State Police and the CoBRA units moved into the forests on actionable inputs about a weapon-making unit set up by the Maoists near Botatang, a village north-east of Karigundam, adds The Hindu.

The Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (Cobra) suffered its first biggest casualty after Security Force (SF) personnel recovered the bodies of five of its missing personnel on September 19, the days after the COBRA sneaked into a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) hideout in Dantewada District and destroyed an arms factory, besides killing as many as 24 militants, according to Telegraph. Operation Green Hunt, on for the last 48 hours, has so far claimed six COBRA personnel, including Assistant Commandant Manoranjan Singh whose body was recovered on September 18. “After a massive search operation, Security personnel spotted the bodies of five missing COBRA personnel in the dense forests of Palachalam,” Inspector-General of Police (headquarters) R. K. Vij told. Among those killed were Assistant Commandant Rakesh Chaurasia, Sub-Inspector, a Head Constable and two Constables. With the death of six of its personnel in Operation Green Hunt, this would be first time that the Central Reserve Police Forces’s (CRPF) COBRA had suffered casualties while combing the forests of Chhattisgarh ever since the special unit was raised in August 2008 to fight CPI-Maoist militants. Along with the State Police, the COBRA personnel had launched a major offensive against Maoists by storming their hideout in Palachalam forests under Kisteram Police Station of Dantewada District. In the operation that was launched on September 18, at least 24 CPI-Maoist militants were shot dead by the SF personnel. The Police have recovered 10 dead bodies so far. An arms factory being run by the CPI-Maoist militants was also destroyed.

At least 12 Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were killed during a gun battle between the Chhattisgarh Police and the extremists in the Bijapur District on September 24, reports Express Buzz. Though the Police could not locate the dead bodies of the slain extremists as they were carried away by their fellow cadres, they arrested two Maoists. None was injured from the Police side, the report added.Chhattisgarh Police sources told Express Buzz over the phone that 600 Police personnel, including the State Task Force and Special Police Officers from Dantewada, set off for the Maoist stronghold of Isulnar village in Bijapur two days ago on specific information about the presence of at least 200 Maoists (a company of the Maoists besides local militia). While combing, a Police party came under heavy fire from the Maoists. The other Police teams soon joined the shootout and a heavy firing ensued. "We fired around 2,000 rounds in reply to an almost equal number of rounds fired by the enemy," Police sources said, adding, that both sides maintained a distance of about 150 metres. They said they could see the Maoists carrying away the bodies of the dead. "We saw nine bodies being carried away but the number of deaths on their side could be more," sources added. The Police suspect that among those killed could be a section commander. The report added that the Maoists used two-inch mortars which are normally available with the Police or paramilitary forces. In addition, two Maoists, identified as Kursam Budru (35) and Kursum Mura (30), were arrested from the encounter site. Even as the gun battle was on, the extremists planted improvised explosive devices along the route which the Police later defused and recovered. Though the encounter came to an end by the evening of September 25, the Police treaded cautiously anticipating landmine attacks. "We found 50 kg explosives near Isulnar village," sources said, describing the two arrested extremist as hardcore who did not reveal anything before the Police.
