One Maoist was injured in an encounter between the CPI-Maoist and the Security Force (SF) personnel at Chapla village in Garhwa District in the wee hours of April 1, reports Business Standard. The encounter took place when a team of CRPF personnel and District armed personnel rushed to the village following a tip-off that a squad led by ‘area commander’ Bhanu had assembled there, sources said. The SF personnel were conducting raids in the village when the Maoists started firing at them forcing them to retaliate in self-defense, sources said, adding that one Maoist sustained bullet injury. Bhanu and his two aides managed to escape, Superintendent of Police (SP) Priyadarshi Alok said.

Five Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were injured in a series of Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blasts carried out by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Dhanbad District of Jharkhand on April 2, reports Business Standard. Deputy Inspector General (Bokaro range) Upendra Kumar Singh said the CRPF personnel were on a long-range patrol when the IED blasts took place at Chitpur village under Topchanchi Police Station around 12.15 pm. The patrol party, including CRPF troops of the 154th battalion and personnel of the state Police, exchanged fire with the Maoists, the DIG said.

Six Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were injured when the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, ambushed a Long Range Patrolling (LRP) party of the CRPF triggering Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast at Topchanchi in the district headquarter of Dhanbad on April 2, reports The Pioneer. Two of the injured troopers are critical and have been admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of Medica Hospital in Ranchi. The incident took place when a team of CRPF was on LRP on motorcycles at Bodra village under Topchanchi Police Station in Dhanbad. The CRPF personnel were riding motorcycles, when the extremists set off the blast through an IED, Police said. State Police Spokesperson SN Pradhan said the incident took place in the bordering area of Dhanbad and Giridih District where the rebels had laid several landmines. As soon as one of the IEDs was triggered the gelatin rods in a series started blowing one by one and a total of 52 landmines were exploded,” he said. “Topchanchi Police Station in charge Dharmdeo Ram and Inspector S Mishra were leading the LRP, while a CRPF team made up the tail of the convoy. After triggering the blast, ultras fired indiscriminately at the convoy, prompting the LRP personnel to return fire .The exchange lasted a little over half an hour,” said a senior Police official.

Five senior People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI) leaders and two members of its armed squad have been arrested from various parts of Ranchi District on April 3, reports The Telegraph. The arrested PLFI leaders have been identified as Ranchi ‘zonal commander’ Tulsi Pahan, Bundu-Tamar ‘area commander’ Bheem Mahto alias Mangal Pandey, Jonha (south) ‘area commander’ Sunil Kachchap, Jonha (north) ‘area commander’ Dev Singh Munda and Nagri-Tupudana ‘area commander’ Birsa Mahto. These apart, Raja Patar and Mukesh Mahto, both members of the outfit's armed squad, have been arrested during two separate raids carried in Jonha and Nagri area. Nine fire weapons, including two double-barrel guns, four country-made rifles and three pistols, around 50 live cartridges, note books, backpacks, levy receipts and 12 mobile phones were recovered from them. Following a tip-off, the Ranchi Police, with the help of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), had planned ‘Operation Mahadev’ to capture the PLFI rebels, who had assembled in Jonha area of Angara, apparently to plan some big crime, Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kuldeep Dwivedi said. PLFI is a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist).

Police launched ‘operation Mahadev’ against Naxals [Left-Wing Extremism, LWE] and arrested seven cadres in and around capital Ranchi on April 3, reports newsonair.com. The arrests include three Naxal ‘commanders’ of the People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI) faction. Police also recovered nine rifles, three small arms and large amounts of ammunition from them. Police sources said that Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kuldeep Diwedi got tip-off about presence of Naxals in Ranchi, after which the operation was planned. Police has also detained a contractor on suspicion of having links with Naxals.

An encounter was reported between Police and Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in Denga Pahari section of the forests located on the borders of the Giridih and Dhanbad District on April 6, reports The Pioneer. A joint team of Giridih Police and 124th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) unit raided the Denga Pahari forest area under the Parasnath Police Station and had an hour –long encounter with Maoists. Three troopers of the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) unit were injured on April 7, when Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Parasnath Hills in Giridih District to target a contingent of forces chasing them, reports The Times of India. Additional Director General (ADG) (operations) and Police spokesperson S N Pradhan said the troopers were hurt by splinters after the blast. An anti-Maoist operation was launched in the area on April 6, after authorities received inputs that 25-odd rebels, led by CPI-Maoist Jharkhand Regional Committee ‘secretary’ Ajay Mahto and his aide Nunu Chand Mahto, are holed up in an area within the limits of Madhuban Police Station of Parasnath Hill.Parasnath is the highest hill in Jharkhand with the most sacred Jain temple Shikharji located on the top. Maoists exploit the topographical advantages of the hill, which rests between the Maoist-hit Dhanbad and Giridih.

The armed squad of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) killed one youth for allegedly being ‘Police informer’ and also collecting levy in favour of Maoists at Pipradih village under Gomia Police Station in Bokaro District late on April 8, reports The Pioneer. The deceased has been identified as Satendra Mandal (26) of Pipradih village. According to reports about 15 to 20 armed Maoists raided his village and took him in the forest area of Chutte-Kharna, when Satendra was coming back on his motorcycle at home in the evening. The villagers saw his body with throat slit on Chutte-Kharna forest way, one kilometre from his house. The Police recovered “parchas” (leaflet/pamphlet) from the spot stating that Satendra, was ‘Police informer’ and collecting “chanda” (levy) in favor of original Maoists group. Mandal also joined rival Uday Mahto group. Police sources said the deceased had a close nexus with the Maoists in the past. Workers and officials of a mining company BGR, engaged at the CCL site in Ulahara of Tapin North to dig coal, told the Police about threats for levy they got from alleged JPC cadres. JPC is a splinter group of the CPI-Maoist. Hazaribagh Superintendent of Police (SP) Akhilesh Kumar Jha agreed the company did not inform the Police about levy demands of the JPC, led by a member who identified himself as Ranjeet. "The culprits will be identified and nabbed soon," the SP said. He added BGR workers in another site in Tapin North area were assaulted last week. "We have stationed forces for security," said Jha.

Getting information, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) (197 Battalion) and District Police personnel, headed by Commandant T.H. Khan and Assistant Commandant Pundarik Mishra searched the areas as part of the ‘area domination campaign’ and recovered 39 pieces of .303 ammunition and 12 electronic detonators, a CRPF release said. Following a tip-off sniffer dogs were pressed into service to unearth the explosives hidden for use against the SF personnel, it said. The release claimed that Left Wing Extremism (LWE) was on the decline in the Saranada forests.

An encounter took place between a joint team of District Police Jharkhand Jaguar Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) 209 battalion and Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres at Latu in Latehar District on April 11, reports The Pioneer. Sources said the joint team of Security Forces (SFs) was after the Maoists since last night of April 10, following a tip off of their presence in Latu. Sources said the encounter has been (so far) casualty free on both the sides. Superintendent of Police (SP), Anoop Birtharay has confirmed the encounter between the SFs and the Maoists at Latu this Monday (April 11) afternoon. The handwritten threat purportedly issued by the Jharkhand unit of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) was posted from Giridih District of Jharkhand on April 18 and delivered the next day at the Gaya airport through an ordinary post bearing INR five stamp. Confirming the receipt of the threat, Gaya Airport Director Dilip Kumar said that it carried names of three Giridih residents as senders of the letter. The Police have been informed and a case has been registered in this connection in the Magadh Medical College Police Station.
