The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has ordered “immediate” shifting of the command headquarters of the force’s central zone from Kolkata to Raipur on May 7, reports The Indian Express. Officials said that newly appointed CRPF Director General Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar had been asked to ensure that the command begins functioning from Raipur before the highlevel meeting of Naxal Left Wing Extremism (LWE)hit states in New Delhi on May 8 (Today). The central zone, an operational field formation, was set up on August 7, 2009. Headquartered in Raipur District, it was given the responsibility of deployment of CRPF troops in the entire ‘Red belt’ of states hit by Naxal violence including West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. State Police are set to intensify combing operations in the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) -dominated areas of Malkangiri and Koraput Districts ahead of the onset of monsoon, which is expected to hit the State in mid-June, reports The Telegraph on May 18. Security Forces (SFs) step up efforts to flush out Maoists around this time before the rains hamper operations. Malkangiri Superintendent of Police (SP), Mitrabhanu Mohapatra said the District Police would ramp up its anti-rebel drive before the rain-enforced slowdown of security efforts against them. "Though we are prepared for combing operations under all conditions, rain can be an impediment. We have to keep this factor in mind," he said. His Koraput counterpart Charan Singh Meena said combing was generally an intelligence-based operation and could be intensified or slowed down depending on the situation. "Our forces can adapt to different situations and weather conditions," he said. Both Malkangiri and Koraput, which share borders with rebel-dominated areas of Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh, are Maoist bastions.
