The US-based banned pro-Khalistan outfit, Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) has announced a reward of USD 125,000 for anyone who would raise or wave the Khalistan flag at the Red Fort on the 74th Independence Day celebrations on August 15 this year, reports The Week on August 11. Issuing an official statement in this regard, SFJ’s ‘legal adviser’, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun claimed that August 15, was not Independence Day for Sikhs as it reminded them of atrocities, they faced during the partition in 1947. “Nothing changed for us, but the rulers. We are still labelled as Hindus in the Indian Constitution and natural resources of Punjab were being unjustly appropriated for other states. We need true independence,” Pannun said. Following the announcement, the national security agencies and Delhi Police have been put on alert.

The British Government does not support the Khalistan movement in the UK or any activity against India, British Prime Minister has assured, says Lord Rami Ranger, businessman and Chairman of British Sikh Association, reports India Today on August 12. As per the report, Lord Ranger said, “I informed Prime Minister Johnson that there are some separatist organisations working for Khalistan and they want to separate Punjab, the Indian side of Punjab from India. Prime Minister categorically assured me that the British Government does not support such organisations or anything against India.” He further called out the organisations and people pushing for Khalistan, to renounce their British Passports, go to India, form a political party and do something “worthwhile” if they really believe in it. Many organisations and Gurdwaras have been working in the UK under the umbrella organisation, Sikh Federation UK and also independently to further a case of Khalistan. He said, “Many many organisations are banned but they come up with another name", and further assured to maintain pressure from his end.

As per the report, the youths also shot a video of the act and raised slogans. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Harmanbir Singh Gill said that the two youths, one of whom was wearing a turban, were captured on CCTV cameras and had “probably fallen in the trap of banned outfit Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) head Gurpatwant Singh Pannu’s announcement”. Pannu had offered USD 2,500 (around INR 1,80,000) to anyone who would replace an Indian flag with that of ‘Khalistan’ atop buildings in Punjab and Haryana, ahead of India’s Independence Day. Moga Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Hans said, “Cops were there on duty and one of them noticed that tricolour’s string was being cut. He ran to nab them but they managed to flee. It is being probed if there was any lapse on the part of security team.”
