The human rights department of the Baloch National Movement (BNM), Paank, on August 7 released its July 2023 report, highlighting an alarming increase in human rights violations in Balochistan, reports The Balochistan Post. The report documents that Security Forces (SFs) forcibly disappeared 57 individuals during July, marking it as the year’s most tumultuous month. Furthermore, seven individuals were killed, and 22 who were previously reported as missing were released, with many showing clear signs of torture. However, the official explanation for their detentions remains undisclosed. The Dera Bugti District has been particularly affected, with 15 enforced disappearances. The report sheds light on military operations which have seen homes ransacked and indiscriminate mortar attacks on civilians. Such actions have led to widespread chaos and destruction in the area.

The Balochistan Post quoting Baloch Liberation Army’s (BLA) statement claimed on August 13 that eleven SF personnel and four Chinese nationals were killed in the attack. In a short media statement, BLA ‘spokesman’ Jeeyand Baloch said that BLA’s Majeed Brigade was behind the attack. The group disclosed the names of the attackers, who were Naveed Baloch alias Aslam of Nigewar Dasht in Kech District and Maqbool Baloch alias Qaim of Awaran District. It also revealed the photos of the attackers on its official media channel, Hakkal. The BLA further announced the completion of the third phase of its “Operation Zir Pehazag” following the suicide attack. The BLA’s statement also conveyed a clear message to China, emphasizing their view of Balochistan as an “occupied territory” and voicing their opposition to Beijing’s projects, like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in the region. “We have cautioned China repeatedly to reconsider its activities in Balochistan,” the BLA statement read. BLA views such endeavours as acts of exploitation, stating that any foreign investments in the region should only proceed after Balochistan achieves independence. Ending on a firm note, the BLA has issued China a 90-day ultimatum to withdraw from Balochistan or prepare for intensified attacks on its “key interests” in the region.
