A total of 2,043 people, mostly civilians, were killed in US drone attacks during the last five years, while 929 causalities were reported only in 2010 in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), The News reported on January 3 quoting Conflict Monitoring Centre (CMC) research report. The yearly report of CMC released on January 1 reveals some eye-popping details about the CIA's notorious drone hit campaign in north-western parts of Pakistan. It terms the CIA's drone hits as 'assassination campaign turning out to be revenge campaign' and shows that 2010 was the deadliest year ever of causalities resulted in drone-hits in Pakistan. According to the report, the number of drone attacks in 2010 was far greater than those of collective number of hits in last five years. In 2010, 134 drone attacks till December 30 were reported, killing 929 people as compared to 96 drone hits killing 1,114 people from 2004 to 2009. December 17 was the deadliest day of 2010 when three drone attacks killed 54 people in Khyber Agency. Last year's 93 days witnessed drone attacks, which means approximately every 4th day of the year saw a drone attack. As many as 115 of total 134 drone attacks were carried out in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) while South Waziristan Agency (SWA) saw nine drone attacks. Khyber Agency that was previously untouched by drones was hit twice in December killing 62 people, the document reports.

More than 500 religious scholars belonging to the Barelvi school of thought paid rich tributes to the assassin of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, Malik Mumtaz Qadri, and urged ‘Muslims across the country’ to boycott the funeral ceremony, adds The Express Tribune. While the Deobandi and Barelvi leaders appear to be on the same page when it comes to condemning the slain Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader for terming the blasphemy law as a black law, the Barelvi scholars, who claim to be the ‘true lovers of the Holy Prophet’, have taken a more hardline stance. The largest body of the Barelvi group, the Jamaate Ahle Sunnat Pakistan (JASP), whose directions are considered binding on every other organisation that follows the same school of thought, issued a statement saying that “No Muslim should attend the funeral or even try to pray for Salmaan Taseer or even express any kind of regret or sympathy over the incident.”

Acknowledging that Pakistan has been the biggest victim of terrorism, the US Assistant Secretary of State Philip J Crowley on January 11 reaffirmed its resolve to assist Islamabad in addressing the challenge of violent extremism comprehensively, reports Daily Times. “We are trying to help Pakistan improve its government, and its relationship with its people, help Pakistan develop the tools and the strategy to combat extremism within its borders,” Assistant Secretary of State Philip J Crowley said at the daily briefing. He noted that extremism is, first and foremost, a threat to Pakistan itself and underscored the strategically located South Asian country’s key importance to regional stability. “There’s no country that has suffered more significantly from terrorism than Pakistan itself.” “It’s a strategic country. It is important in terms of regional stability, it’s important to the United States and others in terms of its links to extremism and the risk of terrorism that does affect all of us, including the United States. We are committed to a long-term partnership with Pakistan.”

In the meantime, US drones will continue to target Taliban sanctuaries in NWA and elsewhere in the tribal belt as this is the only available option to weaken the militants. The Pakistan Government has been facing tremendous pressure from the US to move troops into NWA to target the Haqqani Network, which attacks American and allied forces across the border in Afghanistan.

Pakistan’s fight against terrorist leads to record an increase in cases of Polio from 89 in the previous year to 138, according to World Health Organisation (WHO) figures, Daily Times reported on January 14. That made it the nation with the highest incidence of polio in the world. Most cases were in the northwest close to the Afghanistan border, where battles between the US-supported Pakistani Army and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) make many areas too dangerous to visit. The Army bans travel to parts of the region, citing the security situation, and territory under terrorist control is highly dangerous for outsiders, even Pakistani aid workers. In 2009, one Pakistan Taliban commander declared the vaccine un-Islamic, echoing a few conservative clerics in other Muslim countries. But others have not publicly stated any objections. In Afghanistan, the Taliban cooperate with health workers administering the vaccine, in part because doing so adds to the movement’s legitimacy.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on January 17 submitted a draft bill ‘Deweaponisation of Pakistan Bill of 2011’ in the National Assembly Secretariat seeking to rid the country of weapons, reports The Express Tribune. The ‘Deweaponisation of Pakistan Bill of 2011’, filed as private members’ bill, calls for banning the production, proliferation, smuggling, import and use of firearms and ammunition and explosives “to restore public order in the country. MQM’s parliamentary leader in the National Assembly Farooq Sattar said that his party would also introduce the bill in the Senate and contact other parties to secure endorsement for it. The bill provides “measures for banning the unauthorised production, illicit trafficking, possession and use of arms and weapons, so as to eradicate killings, kidnapping for ransom and extortion by terrorists, criminals and anti-social elements for waging guerrilla war against the state, indulgence in vandalism, mass destruction, suicide bombing, desecration of places of worship, killings of innocent citizens, and to restore peace, tranquillity, sanity and public order in the country,” the MQM leader said reading from the bill. Highlighting statistics, he said that between 2006 and 2009, terrorists and criminals had struck 6,894 times using illicit arms across the country, killing 9,643 people, injuring 18,788 more, besides kidnapping thousands of citizens for ransom. The bill, if passed, will be applicable in four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) but it would not apply on arms, ammunition in the possession of armed forces and law-enforcement agencies working under government control.

A new report on American journalist Daniel Pearl's killing presents fresh evidence that 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed executed the reporter in Pakistan nine years ago and four men imprisoned for the crime were convicted on the basis of perjured testimony, Times of India reported on January 20. It was reported earlier that Mohammed, an al Qaeda operative, confessed beheading Daniel Pearl, who was abducted from Karachi on January 23, 2002 while investigating connections between Pakistani extremists and Richard Reid, who tried to detonate a bomb hidden in his shoe on a transatlantic flight in 2001. The new report, "The truth left behind: Inside the kidnapping and murder of Daniel Pearl", says American security and intelligence officials have used vascular technology, or "vein matching", to show that the hand of an unseen man who killed Pearl on video is that of Khalid Sheik Mohammed.

Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn say they aim to prove that Naseer collected bomb ingredients, conducted reconnaissance and was in frequent contact with other al Qaeda operatives as part of a foiled New York plot and a second suspected plot to bomb a busy shopping area in the northern English city of Manchester.

Pakistan’s determined anti-terror effort has helped reduce effectiveness of core al Qaeda group operating along Afghanistan-Pakistan border, the US State Department acknowledged even as it voiced concern over the emerging threat from the terrorist outfits from the Arabian Peninsula, reports Daily Times on January 21. “We believe that over 10 years, we have had significant successes. Thanks to our international efforts in Afghanistan and also thanks to a very determined effort by the Government and military in Pakistan, we have reduced the effectiveness of this core group of Bin Laden, Zawahiri, and others who are presumably holed up in the Tribal Areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan,” Assistant Secretary of State Philip J Crowley said.

Seeking an image makeover, the Pakistan Government on January 21 decided to stop referring to the country as a "frontline state in the war against terrorism" as it does not want to be perceived as the epicentre of the menace, stated Times of India. "Descriptions like frontline state in war against terrorism overcast the country's positivities. Therefore, we are doing away with this phrase," a senior security official said, adding, “the shift did not symbolise a dilution of the country's commitment to counter-terrorism efforts. Rising extremism and radicalisation of society are emerging as a bigger threat.” "Instability, a shrinking economy, currency devaluation, massive internal security expenses and loss of investment and export markets are just some of the manifestations of the debilitating effects this phrase and the country's alliance with the West has caused," the report said.
