Police on July 3 claimed to have arrested a second suspect involved in an attack on a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) aircraft at Peshawar Airport on June 24, reports Dawn. According to Police, Security Forces and Police jointly carried out a raid in Suleman Khel area of Peshawar and arrested Waliullah, a 'militant commander' of Dara Adam Khel and associated with Shahid Group working under the umbrella of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). At least 20 persons, including Awami National Party (ANP) leader Haroon Bilour, were killed in a suicide blast which targeted an election gathering of ANP in Yakatoot area of Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in the night of July 10, reports, Dawn. The blast took place when Haroon Bilour, who was contesting elections from PK-78 constituency, arrived at the site where the ANP workers had gathered for a corner meeting. Bilour suffered serious injuries and was shifted to the hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. Peshawar Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Qazi Jameel said that more than 30 people were injured in the explosion. At least four perons were killed and 32 others were injured in a bomb blast near the convoy of former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister (CM) Akram Khan Durrani in Haved Bazaar of Bannu town in same District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on July 13, reports Dawn. Unidentified assailants shot dead a political activist, Qari Said Ala, from Landi Kotal (Khyber District) on Nasir Bagh Road in Peshawar, the provincial capital of KP, reports Dawn. Family sources said that Qari Said Alam along with his two other companions was coming from their house near Regi Lalma to Karkhano Market when their car was attacked by unidentified assailants riding on a motorcycle near Nasir Bagh Police Station. He was killed on the spot as he was hit in the head and face, while his companion Fahad was injured in the attack. Said Alam was affiliated with Al-Haj Karawan, a non-political organisation of former Member of National Assembly (MNA) from Khyber Haji Shahji Gul who is contesting the July 25 elections as an independent candidate. He was considered a close aide of Shahji Gul and was running his election campaign. During his recent speeches, he had hinted about the threats he was receiving. Customs authorities seized a cache of arms from a truck at Torkham border crossing on Pak-Afghan border in Khyber District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on July 16, reports Dawn. Officials said that a truck carrying fresh vegetables and steel scrap had arrived at the border point from Afghanistan and was parked at the customs terminal for customs clearance. The customs staff during examination spotted some arms packed in gunny bags concealed in hidden cavities of the vehicle. Officials said that upon opening of the bags, they found 305 repeater guns which they immediately seized. A severe lack of funds provided to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Police force in the run-up to the elections has raised fears that security arrangements for the polls - just six days away - in the province will be greatly affected, Dawn reported on July 20. KP Inspector General (IG) Mohammad Tahir in an exclusive interview with Dawn on July 19 said that despite the Police department submitting a PKR 369 million election budget proposal to the Provincial Government, only PKR 169m had been released, an amount they believe is insufficient to provide adequate security for the election exercise. IG Mohammad Tahir said that of the 12,069 polling stations in the province, 3,174 had been declared 'highly sensitive', while 4,539 had been accorded 'sensitive' status. He further said that almost 52,000 Police personnel will perform duties on election day. Clashes and violence between activists of rival political parties in several areas of country left two people dead as millions of Pakistanis went to polls on July 25, reports Daily Times. A Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) worker was killed and two others were injured during a clash with Awami National Party (ANP) supporters in Swabi Town of same District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Two Police constables were shot dead in Prowa tehsil (revue unit) of Dera Ismail Khan Districton July 31, reports Dawn.Officials said that the constables, identified as Ghulam Abbas and Muhammad Bashir, were riding a motorcycle in an area in the jurisdiction of Prowa Police Station when unidentified assailants open fire on them. Two tribal elders Malik Salam Khan and Malik Niaz Khan were shot dead in incident of target killing in Miramshahtown of North Waziristan District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on July 31, reports Dawn. Family sources said that Malik Salam Khan and Malik Niaz Khan were going from Tappi Village to Miramshah when their vehicle came under fire.Witnesses said that Malik Salam died on the spot while Malik Niaz was taken to the district headquarters hospital in Miramshah where he died during treatment.
