Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the cross-border attack on the Shaltalo security post. Ehsanullah Ahsan, ‘spokesman’ for the TTP, told Reuters by telephone from an undisclosed location that “Up to 40 to 50 of our fighters took part in the operation. None of our fighters were killed.” ‘Deputy leader’ TTP Fakir Mohammed said the group with close ties to al Qaeda had changed strategy and would now focus on large-scale attacks only on State targets like the one in Dir. “Our new strategy of launching big attacks on military installations was aimed at causing demoralisation in the ranks of the security forces and tiring of the Government”. “We also want to limit civilian casualties. Our ultimate objective is to force the Government to end its alliance with the United States,” Mohammad added.

People of various tribal regions have refused to form anti-Taliban lashkars (peace bodies) and demanded release of the 175 members of a jirga (tribal council) allegedly imprisoned in Mohmand Agency about a month ago. Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club, the students of different tribal regions, led by FATA Students Federation vice-president Shafeeq Ahmad Safi, Barhanuddin and Gul Sattar Mengal, rejected the Government’s move to force the tribal people to form anti-Taliban peace bodies. Shafeeq alleged that the political administration of Mohmand Agency had invited a jirga of 175 elders of the region and asked them to form an anti-Taliban lashkar, but on refusal they were detained under the 40 Frontier Crime Regulation. He made it clear that in the prevailing situation the tribal people could not afford such steps. “The members and heads of various Qaumi lashkars (community militia) are being killed in different tribal and settled areas, but the Government has failed to arrest the killers,” he said and added that it was the government’s responsibility to protect lives of the people.

Akram Khan Durrani, Leader of Opposition in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, on June 14 said that the United Nations (UN) is about to recognise the Afghan Taliban as a political force, reports Dawn. Opening the budget debate in the assembly, he said the UN would soon remove the Afghan Taliban from its list of terrorist organisations and it had already opened doors for negotiations with the group. “I am telling you on the floor of the house that the UN will very soon declare the Taliban movement a political party,” he said and urged the Government to resume talks with the ‘forces of resistance’ in the province and tribal areas to end the ongoing bloodshed. Mr Durrani, a close associate of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam - Fazal (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, said Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai had discussed the matter during his visit to Islamabad last week and sought Pakistan’s cooperation. “If Karzai and America can negotiate with the Taliban why cannot our government talk with the local (militant) groups,” he said.
