Tensions mounted at the Torkham border crossing as exchange of fire between Pakistani and Afghan security forces continued on June 14, resulting in injuries to two more Frontier Corps personnel, reports Daily Times. Major Jawad Ali Changezi, who was injured in the border violence on June 13, succumbed to his injuries at the CMH in Peshawar on June 14. The death of the army officer is likely to ratchet up tension between the two neighbouring countries, who sources said were beefing up troop numbers on either side. The Pakistan army has moved heavy weaponry and additional troops to the Afghan border June13-night, said Pakistani security officials, who wished not to be identified because they were not authorised to speak to the media. The conflict also prompted bitter recriminations on both sides, with Islamabad and Kabul summoning each other’s diplomats to lodge strong formal complaints. Three people have been killed so far in the clashes that started on June 12, forcing the closure of the main border crossing. A Pakistan army officer and two Afghan policemen were among those killed. At least 18 people from the Pakistani side, many of them civilians, were wounded, while nine Afghans also received injuries in the gunfights. The border is now closed until the tension subsides.

There have been 626 search and strike operations in Peshawar District alone in the first half of 2016, The Express Tribune reported on June 20. This is a tactic devised to curb urban violence in the post-military operation scenario. In background briefings, security officials reveal that the spiral of threat from militants is concentrated in the three main districts of Peshawar, Mardan and Dera Ismail Khan as far as urban areas are concerned. At the same time, it is stressed that innovative measures, which are pre-emptive rather than preventive, are needed to tackle with the matter. The search, strike and combing operations are part of a larger plan not just keep the militancy at bay, but clamp down on criminal groups which facilitate terrorism in one way or another. There are 31 checkpoints in the city that keep a watch on all vehicles and passers-by.Official statistics of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police show that 258 proclaimed offenders were arrested within the jurisdiction of 32 Police Stations. More than 15,000 arms and ammunition were also seized across the city since January 1. These operations were categorized into three different types, explains SSP Operations Abbas Majeed Marwat. He said a total of 118 were conducted jointly with the Army, 124 were intelligence-based operations and more than 365 were conducted solely by the Police. Around 4,000 places, including houses, hotels and hostels, were searched. These resulted in the arrest of 3,287 suspects.

Unidentified militants on June 26 lobbed a hand-grenade into a house in Jatti Payan area under Daudzai Police Station in Peshawar, the provincial capital of KP, reports The News. The blast damaged the house but did not result in any casualty. There were reports that another explosive device that did not go off was later defused by the bomb disposal unit.Meanwhile, the KP Government on June 26 made a drastic cut in the funds for minorities, allocating a whopping PKR 300 million for the Darul Uloom Haqqania, reports The News. In the last year’s budgetary allocation made for the Department of Auqaf and Minority Affairs, 52.70% was earmarked for the welfare of minorities in the Annual Development Programme in contrast with 23.49% this year, an examination of the budget documents and discussion with relevant officials reveal. While a disproportionate increase has been registered in funds for Auqaf and a major chunk went to the Darul Uloom Haqqania, the funds reserved for textbooks and fees for deserving students in Christian institutions like convent schools have been reduced. The cuts in allocations for medical grants and dowry fund for minority members are separate from this. This reduction has occurred in the absence of any Minister holding the portfolio of Minority Affairs. Suran Singh, murdered in April 2016, was the last in-charge of this Ministry.
