Two militants were killed in an encounter after a roadside bomb went off near a Police mobile van at Samar Bagh Police Station in Timergara town in Lower Dir District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on January 2, reports Dawn. Sources said that the Police were on routine patrol when a roadside bomb exploded hitting the rear part of the van. Additional Station House Officer Shah Khalid, Assistant Sub-Inspector Razimand Khan and Constable Qismat Ali were injured in the blast. District Police Officer Dir Lower Mumtaz Zarin said that two militants, behind the bomb explosion, were chased and killed in an encounter with Police and local lashkar (tribal militia). A bomb, two suicide jackets, two uniforms, a battery cell and 10-yard wire were recovered from the possession of the slain militants. However, the identities of the slain militants were yet to be conformed.

An anti-terrorism court judge on January 3 started the trial of Tehreek-e-Nafaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi (TNSM) ‘chief’ Maulana Sufi Muhammad amid tight security in the Central Prison of Peshawar, the Provincial Capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Sufi Muhammad is facing charges of sedition, conspiring against the State and encouraging terrorism. Public Prosecutor Khurshid said that there were also a host of other charges against him, including those under Section 302 and 324 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). He said Swat Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Asim Imam started the trial of TNSM ‘chief’ Maulana Sufi Muhammad by establishing a camp court in the prison. The proceedings lasted for five hours.

At least 20 persons were killed and another 16 injured when a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into Miryan Police Station in the Bannu town of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on January 12, reports Daily Times. The intensity of the blast was so high that it also badly damaged a nearby mosque. “The target was the Police Station and the nearby mosque. Police and paramilitary personnel were praying inside the mosque,” when the bombing took place, Bannu District Police Chief Mohammad Iftikhar said. “There are some civilians also but most of the victims are security personnel,” he added. Claiming the responsibility, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Azam Tariq said it was to avenge US drone strikes in Pakistan’s tribal belt, which borders Afghanistan. “We claim responsibility for this attack. We will continue such attacks unless the drone attacks are stopped,” Azam Tariq added.

Sources said that Malik Mohammad Salam Khan, the chief of anti-Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (anti-TTP) volunteers of Tarkzo area in Mohmand Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), had come to Tablighee Markaz in Peshawar along with Shah Wali Khan, a tribal elder of Khyber Agency. Malik Salam Khan was a known pro-government elder of Tarkzo village in Yaka Ghund area of Mohmand Agency. He had raised an armed lashkar (tribal militia) against militants. It is to be mentioned here that Malik Salam is the sixth elder and head of a peace body falling prey to militants` attack in Peshawar. Meanwhile, TTP Mohmand chapter ‘spokesman’ Sajjad Mohmand claimed responsibility for killing of Salam Khan.
