A car bomb explosion- outside an Imambargah (congregation hall for Shia rituals) near the Qisakhwani Bazaar in Peshawar, capital of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), killed at least 22 persons and injured more than 90 on December 5, Daily Times reported. Hospital sources said the death toll might increase because some of the wounded are in a critical condition. Imambargah Alamdar Karbala and several adjacent buildings in the Kocha Risaldar alley were damaged and the ensuing fire engulfed buildings, markets and vehicles. The powerful explosion also damaged electricity wires, plunging the area into darkness. NWFP Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said that about 20 to 25 kilograms of explosives were used in the blast, which he said did not appear to be a suicide bombing. The explosion created a five feet deep crater. The site of the bombing is one of the busiest markets in the city, with hundreds of shops in markets in narrow alleys.

At least 171 vehicles of the US-led NATO forces, including 62 armoured personnel carriers, were torched by armed attackers in two parking bays on the Ring Road in the vicinity of Pishtakhara in Peshawar on December 7- morning, The News reported. Around 130 vehicles were completely destroyed in the attack, while 40 others were partially damaged. The attack is the biggest ever on NATO logistics in Pakistan, during which a watchman was killed while two others were injured when they offered resistance to over 300 attackers, who were armed with rocket launchers, hand grenades, petrol bombs and AK-47 rifles. A worker at the Port World Logistics on Ring Road near Pishtakhara said 106 vehicles were parked in their parking lot, including trucks, Humvees, cranes, fire brigade trucks and jeeps. Over 60 other vehicles were parked at the Al-Faisal Terminal, located across the Ring Road. A worker of the Port World Terminal said that over 300 armed men fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the main gate of the parking lot and after breaking in, opened indiscriminate fire on watchmen, killing one on the spot and injuring two others. He added that the attackers later fired rockets at the parked vehicles, hurled petrol bombs and sprinkled fuel on the trucks to set them ablaze. The firing of rocket launchers and automatic weapons that started at around 3:15 am (PST) continued for almost 45 minutes. The attack is second in the past week after the December 1 similar assault when two drivers were killed and 15 NATO trucks were set ablaze. The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan had warned of attacking the NATO supplies through Pakistan if the American forces did not stop the missile strikes in FATA and parts of the NWFP. Since then, NATO trucks were attacked twice on the Ring Road, two kilometers away from the Peshawar Cantonment.

Investigators probing the December 5 explosion at Koocha-e-Risaldar in Peshawar have come to the conclusion that it was a suicide attack, saying the bomber was reduced to pieces due to the huge quantity of the explosives laden in the car, The News reported. 32 persons were killed and over 120 others were wounded in the blast just outside the Imambargah (Shia place of worship) Alamdar in Koocha-e-Risaldar. “In fact, it was a suicide car bombing. The driver of the explosive-laden vehicle wanted to move ahead but he could not get any space. In the meantime, a security guard raised alarm and ran towards him due to which the terrorist blew himself up,” a top investigator claimed. Earlier, police were of the opinion that the explosion was triggered by a car bomb, parked on the Muhammad Ali Johar Road. “We suspect a sectarian hand behind the attack,” an unnamed police official said.

Taliban torched at least 53 vehicles destined for NATO forces in Afghanistan in an attack on the outskirts of Peshawar early on December 8– the second such raid in two days, police and locals said, according to Daily Times. Armed gunmen shouting ‘God is great’ attacked Bilal Container Terminal near Jamil Chowk on the Ring Road at around 3am, said Zahid Ali, a local resident. He said he heard gunshots and explosions after which a large part of the terminal caught fire. City Superintendent of Police Chaudary Ashraf said it was a sabotage attack. The number of attackers could not be ascertained, he said, and it was not clear how they entered the terminal and set ablaze the vehicles. Meanwhile, a Pentagon official said on December 8 the attacks would have a minimal impact on US and NATO forces in Afghanistan and no effect on combat operations. "The overall impact on our logistical efforts to resupply US forces, NATO forces… as well as Afghan forces has been small and had an overall insignificant impact to date… There’s been no direct bearing on our immediate combat capabilities," said Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman.

Daily Times reported that a key Taliban commander accused of masterminding attacks on cargo terminals harbouring NATO supplies was arrested from a Peshawar suburb on December 9. Musatafa Kamal Kamran Hijrat allegedly organised two separate attacks on three cargo terminals on December 7 and 8 to burn hundreds of containers and the military and other supplies they carried. He is also blamed for the hijacking of two US military Humvees and 13 truckloads of wheat on their way to Afghanistan in November 2008. "He is not in touch with us for the last two days," a source quoted the commander’s close aide, Kashmir Khan, as saying. "We don’t know whether he has gone to Afghanistan or has been arrested," he added. However, the Peshawar Police chief did not confirm the arrest. "This is all gupshup (gossip)… We have made no such arrest," Siffat Ghayur said. Mustafa Kamal, whose real name is Yahya Hijrat, was a District governor in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province during the Taliban rule. He now leads a group of Taliban loyal to Baitullah Mehsud in the Khyber tribal region.

The Jama’at-ud-Da’awa (front outfit for Lashkar-e-Toiba [LeT]) chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed was placed under house arrest for three months as the countrywide crackdown on the organisation continued on December 11, Dawn reported. Police sealed Qudsia Mosque, the headquarters of Jama’at-ud-Da’awa in Chauburji Chowk, and 18 other offices throughout Punjab province. Five offices were sealed in Sialkot. 25 members of the organisation, including Ameer Hamza, Hafiz Abdul Rehman Makki, Maulana Naseer Hamza, Saifullah Mansoor, Da’awa’s director of public relations, Col (retd) Nazir Ahmed, and Rajanpur District president Talib Rehman, were detained. A large number of publications of the organisation were reportedly seized. Hafiz Saeed was detained at his Johar Town residence under the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance. "Police have encircled the house of Hafiz Saeed and told him he cannot leave his home. They have told him that the detention order will be formally issued shortly," his spokesman Abdullah Montazir said. A Police official said detention orders had also been issued by the Punjab home department and raids were being conducted to arrest Yahya Mujahid, Abu Umer a number of other prominent members. Sources said that an office of the organisation on Chamberlain Road, in Gawalmandi, had been sealed a few days ago. Six members of the organisation were arrested from its main relief camp on the Karakoram Highway, near Ghazikot Township, on December 10. In Rawalpindi, Police sealed the group’s local office on Circular Road. In Peshawar, the NWFP capital, Police sealed the Jama’at-ud-Da’awa office in Fowara Chowk. However, Attiqur Rehman Chohan, the provincial spokesman for the Da’awa, told Dawn from an unspecified location that the organisation had decided to close its offices in Peshawar and other cities and suspend its activities for the time being. He said the group’s leaders were in touch with the provincial Government and major political parties and the issue would be raised in the national and provincial assemblies. Security forces (SFs) also raided an office of the Da’awa in Parhana area of Mansehra District and arrested five of its activists. SFs had sealed the relief camp-cum-office a day before Eidul Azha. The group’s office in Quetta, capital of Balochistan, was also sealed. In Karachi, Police sealed the central office of the Jama’at-ud-Da’awa in Gulshan-i-Iqbal. City Police chief Waseem Ahmed said the office was sealed on a directive of the federal Government and efforts were being made to track down top leaders. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the State Bank said the central bank had frozen bank accounts of the Jama’at-ud-Da’awa, its leaders and sister organisations — Al-Rashid Trust and Al-Akhtar Trust. The Government banned Jama’at-ud-Da’awa, arrested its top leaders, sealed its offices throughout the country and Pakistan occupied Kashmir, froze its bank accounts and cancelled the declaration of its publication after the United Nations blacklisted the organisation for its alleged involvement in the Mumbai attacks and links with al Qaeda, interior ministry sources said. "Instructions have been issued to seal Jama’at-ud-Da’awa offices in all the four provinces as well as Azad Kashmir," said Interior Ministry spokesman Shahidullah Baig, The News reported.

Two US military trucks were destroyed when suspected militants attacked a parking lot with petrol bombs on the Ring Road in Peshawar, capital of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), on December 11, Dawn reported. The assailants hurled explosives in the premises of the Bilal Parking and by the time fire-fighters doused the flames two military vehicles had been destroyed. "It’s time for the federal Government and NATO forces to come forward and devise a strategy to improve security at these terminals because Police are already overstretched because of the law and order situation," said Peshawar Senior Superintendent of Police Kashif Alam. He told journalists that Peshawar had a large population and the Police had mostly been busy in providing security to its citizens. In the present circumstances it was not possible for the Police to focus on these terminals, he added.
