Four police personnel were killed and two others sustained injuries when suspected Taliban militants attacked their vehicle in the Mattani police precincts of Peshawar, capital of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) late on July 4-night, according to Daily Times. An unnamed senior police official disclosed that a group of 25 to 30 attackers opened fire on a police picket at around 1:30am. The attackers also shot at a police vehicle which arrived at the incident site, killing four police personnel and wounding two others. The official said that the attackers fired nearly 500 rounds on the police party amidst slogans of ‘Allah-o-Akbar’. Capital City Police Officer Abdul Majeed Marwat told Dawn that “It is too early to draw a conclusion from the incident, but the killings appear to be a reaction to the Lal Masjid incident in Islamabad.” No one has claimed responsibility for the killing so far. Police also recovered two kilograms of explosives from the vehicle. According to Marwat, the three were involved in the bombings at CDs shops in the province. He said they were also involved in a bomb blast at the Peshawar bus terminal on April 17. During investigations, he said, the accused have confessed to their involvement in a bomb blast near the Peshawar High Court on May 29. However, Marwat said, the accused were not involved in the recent suicide bombings and also had no links with jihadis. In Lahore, intelligence personnel raided a house near Niazi bus stand and arrested four suspects. One of the arrested, Aurangzaib, was later released.
