the law-enforcement agencies have undertaken stringent security measures in and around the Peshawar Central Prison since shifting of alleged CIA informer Dr Shakil Afridi to the jail. The provincial government had made all necessary arrangements for the shifting of Dr Shakil to a more secure prison in Punjab and a green signal by the federal government to this effect was awaited. “Many families and those working in the area have been concerned since Dr Shakil was shifted to the Peshawar prison. Their fears are genuine in the wake of the Bannu jailbreak and that is why the provincial government is insisting that the federal government should shift Dr Afridi to a safer place at the earliest,” an official of the Home and Tribal Affairs Department said.

A peace volunteer, who was kidnapped on May 19, was found slaughtered in Matani area on the outskirts of Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on June 4, reports Dawn. Sherbaz, a member of Bazidkhel Qaumi Lashkar (community militia), was abducted along with another friend on May 19 when he was on way to his home in Ghaziabad locality of Matani. Police said that the body of the peace volunteer was found on a pavement. Ghulam, another worker of the peace body, had also been kidnapped along with him. He was also slaughtered and his body was thrown in Matani area few days ago. “A chit written in Pashto language was found with the body. The chit says that those supporting anti-Taliban forces and volunteers will face the same fate,” sources said adding that names of few other people were also mentioned in the chit.

A Peshawar local judicial magistrate on June 5 granted bail to three Pakistani staffers of the US Consulate, including two drivers and a security guard, charged with transportation of unlicensed automatic weapons in two diplomatic vehicles, reports Dawn. He, however, linked their release with the furnishing of two sureties of PKR 100,000 each. While driver Ahsanullah and guard Manzoor Ellahi were freed, driver Asif Khan was sent to jail as his surety bonds were rejected as the national identity card of one of his two guarantors was expired. Police on June 4 detained two diplomatic vehicles boarded by the three suspects along with three foreign staffers of the US Consulate near a toll plaza on Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway. Police objected to the presence of unlicensed arms in the vehicles.

a Senior Official, District Coordination Officer Siraj Ahmad Khan said that around one hundred thousand illegal Afghan nationals have returned to their country from Peshawar since the City District Government issued warning to them on May 25, 2012. Khan claimed that unregistered Afghan nationals were leaving Peshawar voluntarily and a large number had gone back during the last couple of days via Torkham border. “Approximately 100,000 illegal Afghans have gone back to their homeland so far,” Siraj Khan told the media. He added that about 400,000 Afghans had been residing in the provincial capital illegally. He said that eviction of illegal Afghans would gain momentum in the coming days. However, a source said that International Agencies, monitoring cross border movement of registered and unregistered refugees between Pakistan and Afghanistan, did not report significant rush of Afghans at Torkham. “United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation of Afghanistan did not report considerable increase in number of Afghans, returning to their country,” said the source, adding that the United Nations (UN) Agency and Afghan Government regularly checked cross border movement. He said that 50 to 60 Afghans were deported at Torkham every week that was a routine matter. “Everyone will feel visible change if 100,000 Afghans leave Peshawar,” he said.

At least two Policemen, identified as Abdul Jabbar (40) and Naheedullah (38), were killed and five others, including three civilians were injured in a suicide attack targeting the convoy of Faheem-ur-Rehman, the head of the anti-Taliban Bazidkhel Qaumi Lashkar (Peace Committee) at Bazidkhel Chowk in Badhaber area of Peshawar on June 12, reports Daily Times. Both the Policemen killed in the attack belonged to Bazidkhel village and were members of the Special Force. According to bomb disposal unit, legs of the bomber had been found and he appeared to be a teenager. Fahim said that as a routine, he travelled in his own car, but this time he had luckily changed the vehicle and escaped the attack. “Yes, there are threats to my life, but I am not worried because it was not the first attack on my life,” he said. He accused Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) of carrying out the attack because he had been opposing them for a long time and would not succumb to their pressure. “We are determined to fight the Taliban and Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) because they are against Pakistan and killing innocent people,” Fahim added.

the Peshawar High Court (PHC) Chief Justice Dost Mohammad Khan on June 13 (today) underlined the need for solid steps to ensure rule of law and upholding of the Constitution for healthy development of society. Speaking at the oath-taking ceremony of PHC Bar Association in Dera Ismail Khan District, he said the bench and bar were two important pillars of judiciary and therefore, they should strive for dispensation of justice. He said a large number of missing persons was a great challenge for the judiciary but its efforts had led to the shifting of around 900 such persons to internment centres notified by the Government.

The Ministry of Defence through an affidavit submitted in the Peshawar High Court (PHC) claimed on June 20 that neither the Federal Government nor the top brass of the Armed Forces had inked any secret agreement with the United States (US) to allow drones attacks in the tribal areas, reports The News. Deputy Attorney General (DAG), Muhammad Iqbal Mohmand submitted the written reply of the Ministry of Defence in the division bench comprising Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan and Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth. During the previous hearing the bench had directed the DAG to explain whether they had allowed the US to carry out drone attacks in the country’s tribal areas. The DAG told the bench there was no secret deal between the Federal Government and US and this was the reason it had opposed the drone strikes, taken up the matter with the US Government and passed resolution in the National Assembly against these attacks. He argued that the drone strikes in the tribal areas were in violation of the country’s sovereignty and international conventions and the Government was even ready to pursue the case in the International Court of Justice (ICJ). To a query, he said the US started the drone strikes during former president Pervez Musharraf’s rule and the court should summon him and ask about any verbal or written deal on drone strikes with the US. The court had already made Musharraf a party in the petitions filed against the drone strikes and given 15 days to his lawyer Mauzzam Butt to get power of attorney from him to submit his written reply about the drone strikes.

A bomb on a donkey cart killed three people at a Sufi shrine in Peshawar, the Provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on June 21, according to Dawn. “Three people have died and 21 are wounded,” Police official Asif Iqbal told AFP, adding, the dead included a five-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl who had come with their parents. “The bomb was planted in a donkey cart parked near the shrine,” he said. The donkey, whose front legs were tied with a rope, was blown to pieces, he said. The device was fitted with a timer and carried between eight and 10 kilograms of explosives, he said. “It appears that the target was the worshippers who were gathered here,” another Police officer, Tahir Ayub, said. The shrine houses the graves of several Sufi saints. The tomb of popular Pashto poet Rahman Baba is also near the Panj Peer shrine.

The bullet-riddled body of chief of the anti-Taliban Bazidkhel Qaumi Lashkar (community militia), Fahim-ur-Rehman, who escaped at least seven attempts on his life since 2008, was found in his white Land Cruiser on the Ring Road of Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on June 27, reports Dawn. The bodies of his three close friends and associates, Altaf Bacha, Haji Niaz Muhammad and Rahim Lala, were also found in the vehicle. Superintendent of Police Asif Iqbal said that personnel of the bomb disposal squad found the bodies after they had been informed about them at around 6.30am. He said the slain men might have been killed elsewhere and their bodies moved to the Ring Road. The chief of the Bazidkhel lashkar and his three associates sustained multiple bullet injuries to their heads and chests, he said. On June 12, two of his Police guards were killed in a suicide attack on his vehicle near his residence, but he survived simply because he was sitting in another car at the time. Meanwhile, both the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) have claimed responsibility for the murder of Mr Rehman and his three associates. “We killed Fahim and his comrades. They raised a militia against us and wanted to defeat us,” Ehsanullah Ehsan, the spokesman for the TTP, told journalists by phone. On their part, the LI said they would soon release a video of the four slain men.
