Thousands of people protesting United States (US) drone strikes blocked a road in Peshawar on November 23 used to truck NATO troop supplies and equipment in and out of Afghanistan, reports The News. The protest, Imran Khan, had more symbolic value than practical impact as there is normally little NATO supply traffic on the road. The blocked route in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province leads to one of two border crossings used to send supplies overland from Pakistan to neighbouring Afghanistan. Khan, whose Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party runs the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government, called on Federal officials to take a firmer stance to force the US to end drone attacks and block NATO supplies across the country. "We will put pressure on America, and our protest will continue if drone attacks are not stopped," Khan told the protesters. Meanwhile, the PTI’s decision to choke NATO supply routes could deprive Pakistan of billions of dollars it receives from the US in financial aid, according to experts and Government officials, reports The Express Tribune. Under the Ground Lines of Communication (GLOC) agreement with the US, Pakistan receives an estimated USD 1,500-1,800 for every truck that carries supplies for NATO forces through the country, Government officials said. The bill amounts to roughly USD one million per day, they added. In addition to depriving Pakistan of the direct payment it receives for allowing NATO supplies to pass through its territory, violating the GLOC agreement may also prompt the US to withhold the USD 1.2 billion Pakistan hopes to receive under the Coalition Support Fund, the officials said. The amount has already been included in the country’s budget for the current fiscal year.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers continued denying access to heavy vehicles transporting supplies for foreign forces in Afghanistan on November 25, while the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police registered cases against 35 people for causing disturbances to public order, reports Daily Times. “Dozens of vehicles were forced to return at a number of points in Peshawar, Nowshera, Dera Ismail Khan and Kohat Districts, while trucks carrying goods under the Afghan Transit Trade were allowed to continue their journey,” a spokesman for the PTI said in a statement. KP Police chief Nasir Khan Durrani ordered Police to file cases against all those who were disturbing public order, after which 35 PTI workers were booked by Pishtakhara Police Station in Peshawar. They were booked for manhandling truck drivers and obstructing smooth flow of traffic during the protest demonstration against drone strikes on Ring Road near Hayatabad. In addition, the All Pakistan Transporters Owners Association said on November 25 that truck drivers will not carry any NATO supplies as long as the PTI protest continues, reports The Express Tribune. The Association’s President Haji Malk Khwaja Muhammad Khan said truck drivers had been informed if they carry any NATO shipment, they would be personally responsible for the damages as both vehicles and goods could both be affected in such situations. Meanwhile, a top police official in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) directed law enforcement personnel on November 25 to initiate legal action following the lodging of an First Information Report (FIR) against the November 21, 2013, Hangu drone strike in which provincial authorities also want the United States (US) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to be included, reported The Express Tribune. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Nasir Durrani issued directives in the wake of an application filed by PTI’s central legal affairs Barrister Suleman Afridi, who is party to the issue. Also, legislators led by KP Finance Minister for Sirajul Haq, Information Minister Shah Farman and Agriculture Minister Shahram Khan Tarakai presented to the US Consulate a document on their demand to end drone strikes in Pakistan. “The people of KP and their Government condemn drone strikes as indisputably unlawful…therefore the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan should convey to the Government and people of the United States and its allies, directly and through the United Nations Security Council, that drone strikes must stop. As a sovereign state, Pakistan shall exercise all options available to it when its people and territory are victims of external aggression,” read the memorandum presented by representatives of the KP Government to the US Consulate. “A protest will also be held outside the Parliament House, the Prime Minister House, as well as UN offices in Islamabad,” stated Haq.

Activists from PTI and Jama’at-e-Islami (JEI) had set up a protest camp on November 24, 2013 at Hayatabad Toll Plaza to prevent NATO containers from entering the city. Since then the protesters have stopped trucks passing through the route for verification and returned those carrying goods for NATO forces in Afghanistan. Many have been accused of damaging goods and manhandling truck drivers, with Police earlier registering cases against 40 PTI workers.
