Reports from Jammu have indicated that the Gandhi Nagar police on January 4 arrested two suspects, including a woman, from the Jammu University Campus. A car and a letterhead of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) group were recovered from their possession. While confirming the arrests, police, however, declined to disclose the identity of the arrested couple and their links with the LeT. However, unconfirmed reports said that the youth belonged to Rajouri while the woman hailed from Bhatindi. Separately, local people overpowered two suspected terrorists from a house at Mangnar village in the Poonch district and later handed them over to the police.

According to media reports, unidentified terrorists killed three civilians, including two members of a family, on January 7, in Anantnag district. Reports indicated that unidentified terrorists dropped three butchered bodies at two different locations in Aeshmuqam area. All the three slain civilians were residents of Gogaldara Hapatnaar and had been abducted from their respective residences. This type of killing, in Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s home district, has been witnessed for the first time since the present People’s Democratic Party-led coalition government took office in November 2002. Although no terrorist group has claimed responsibility, official ources suspect that the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) might have carried it out.

The court framed charges against LeT terrorists and Pakistani national Ashfaq, his wife Rahmana Yusuf Farooqi, Babar Mohsin Bhagwala, Devender Singh, Shahnshah Alam, Rajiv Kumar Malhotra, Moolchand Sharma, Matlub Alam, Farooq Ahmed Qasid and Nazir Ahmed Qasid for attacking the Red Fort. On December 22, 2000, a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) suicide squad attacked the Red Fort in New Delhi, killing two Army personnel and a civilian.

Reports from north Kashmir indicated that, on specific information, security forces (SFs) launched a cordon-and-search operation at Wagoora in the Pattan locality, Baramulla district, on January 8. During the operation, even as the terrorists took shelter in the house of a civilian, three of them were killed. While some reports said the slain terrorists were Pakistani cadres of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) group, an unnamed official claimed they were affiliated to the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM). Three AK-56 rifles and an unspecified quantity of assorted ammunition were recovered from the encounter-site.

According to official sources, three Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists and a security force (SF) personnel were killed and one more SF personnel was injured in an encounter at Khanetar, under Poonch police station-limits, on January 11. A joint team of Army and police personnel searching the area, on specific information about terrorist presence, came under heavy firing. The three terrorists were killed in retaliatory firing by SFs. However, an Army personnel was also killed and one more was injured during the encounter, while the terrorists’ hideout was destroyed during the encounter. The search team recovered, among other things, two AK-47 rifles, five magazines, two wireless sets, a compass and five Rocket Propelled Gun (RPG) rockets from the hideout.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided his hideout on January 12-night and killed him in an exchange of fire, police sources said.

Media reports of January 13 said main accused in the December 2-bomb blast, in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, inside a bus, Imran Rehman Khan disclosed he was summoned by the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) to Dubai to formulate a plan "to avenge Gujarat killings". Imran, who was deported to India on January 9 from Dubai, was recruited into LeT ranks sometime in March-April 2002, reports said. As reported earlier, he was arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA), on January 9, and remanded to police custody till January 17. In the blast, two persons were killed and 31 more injured.

A warning to this effect has been issued to the Special Cell of the Delhi Police by the IB and India’s external intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). Also, a foreign mercenary was killed while he was attempting to infiltrate across the Line of Control (LoC) in Bhimber Gali sector, Poonch district. However, two other infiltrators of the group managed to escape back to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). Recoveries made from the incident-site included an AK rifle, two magazines, 43 rounds of ammunition, two RPGs, 16 RPG grenades, a sniper rifle, a claymore mine and Rs 5500 in Indian currency. In a separate incident, another terrorist affiliated to the LeT was killed by SFs in Chachal village, Banihal area of Doda district. Official sources were quoted as saying in the report that eight to nine suicide squads, besides other terrorists, have been brought from interior areas of Pakistan and kept ready at three different launching pads in Shakergarh sector of Pakistan for infiltration into J&K to disrupt Republic Day functions. These include suicide squads of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Al Badr. The terrorists have been reportedly instructed to carry out suicide attacks at Republic Day venues, attack Ministers and target religious places on or before January 26. These terrorists are reportedly being directly commanded by the SSG, also known as the ‘Sabotage Force’.

In a massive combing operation in Mumbai and Thane, police picked up some 250 persons for questioning in connection wit the blasts. Reportedly, United Arab Emirates (UAE) based LeT terrorist Abu Hamza is suspected to be the masterminded behind the first explosion, in which a women was killed and 25 more injured. Media reports, on January 29, said Mumbai Police is pursuing the deportation of United Arab Emirates (UAE) based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorist Abu Hamza, who is suspected to be the brain behind the December 2, 2002-bomb blasts in Ghatkopar and the January 27&28-blasts in Vile Parle, Mumbai. According to police sources, Abu Hamza alias Abdul Bari, of Hyderabad, Andhra Pradresh, migrated to Dubai along with his family about eight years ago. He is believed to have come into contact with the LeT in Dubai. Till date, no arrests have been made in connection with the Vile Parle blasts. But, over 275 persons, many of them suspected Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) cadres, have been picked up for questioning in Mumbai and Thane, sources added.
