The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has given another two days to the government to end the military operation in the Swat district of NWFP and pull out all security force personnel from the area, and warned that it will expand its actions from Waziristan to Kohistan and settled districts if their demand is not met. Maulana Omar, a spokesman for the TTP, told Dawn by telephone on January 2 that an earlier deadline for withdrawal of troops had lapsed on December 15, but they did not resume their activities because the entire nation was in mourning following the tragic death of Benazir Bhutto. "Now we extend the deadline for two days and ask the government to withdraw troops and halt the operation in Swat. Otherwise, we will attack the government everywhere and it will be an all-out war," he warned.

Warplanes bombed suspected locations of militants in South Waziristan on January 3 after an intelligence report that Pakistan Tehrik-i-Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud was hiding somewhere in the area, according to Dawn. Locals said that two planes dropped six bombs and attacked various areas in Tiarza, Emer Raghzai and Enzer in Sara Rogha subdivision at about 2pm. However, reports about casualties are yet to be ascertained. Dozens of people are feared dead due to shelling by Pakistani jets in different parts of the Mehsud-dominated areas in South Waziristan, The Post reported.

Police in the Mianwali district claimed on January 17 to have foiled a terrorism bid when it arrested three ‘potential car bombers’ when their car had an accident on the Bannu-Mianwali Road on December 21, 2007, according to Dawn. The ‘potential bombers’ later revealed to the police that former federal minister Sumaira Malik belonging to the adjacent Khushab district was their target; and had they not been struck in the accident, she would have been targeted the next day in a suicide attack. The three militants were identified as Wasif Ali Shah of Bannu in the NWFP, Niaz Bahadur and Abdul Rahman from Miranshah in North Waziristan. During interrogation, they revealed that they belonged to terrorist groups, headed by Faqiro and Darpa, who were working under the supervision of Maulana Said Khan, the superintendent of Fazal Qadar seminary in Miranshah’s main bazaar. Said Khan is further linked to Baitullah Mehsud, leader of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan. Regional Police Officer Hamid Mukhtar Gondal stated that the militants revealed that one Ghulam Nabi was spearheading all suicide attacks in the Punjab province.

Tehrik-i-Taliban spokesman Maulana Umar told Dawn that militant commander Baitullah Mehsud had led the charge on the British-era fort. He claimed the Taliban had lost only two of their men in the fighting. Sources said that the militants had abandoned the fort after seizing arms and ammunition left behind by the paramilitary unit. The locals said that after capturing the compound the militants took away weapons, communication tools and blew up the building with explosives. According to eyewitnesses, the militants captured several soldiers and slaughtered many of them.

Over three dozen paramilitary soldiers are reported to have abandoned a fort in South Waziristan on January 17 before it was attacked by militants, according to Dawn. The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan spokesman Maulana Umar claimed that about 60 paramilitary soldiers had surrendered without putting up resistance. He said the militants had taken away weapons and hoisted a white flag at the compound. "The soldiers surrendered without firing a shot and, therefore, the Taliban Shoora decided to set them free," Umar told Dawn. On January 15-night, the militants had captured a fort in Sararogha.

Even as troops continued targeting militants’ positions in South Waziristan, Baitullah Mehsud, chief of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, warned of serious repercussions if the military operations were not stopped, Dawn reported. His spokesman Maulana Umar said: "The government wants to enter the Mehsud area by force. But it must take into account the consequences of such a harsh action." He accused the security forces (SFs) of ‘killing innocent people’ and ‘damaging their homes’ and warned that the government would have to "pay a heavy price".

Military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said 10 soldiers were killed in two days of fighting as the security forces (SFs) stormed militant positions in several towns, including Spinkai Raghzai in Srarogha near Jandola, Mohammad Nawaz Kot in Tiarza and Makeen. He said the SFs destroyed the maximum number of militant hideouts in these areas and cleared the towns from the miscreants. Abbas added that 40 militants were killed during the fighting while many others sustained injuries. He also said the troops arrested 30 militants who were trying to escape during the clashes. He said eight soldiers died in Spinkai Raghzai and two others in Mohammad Nawaz Kot. The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed to have captured five soldiers and taken into custody five trucks loaded with heavy arms and ammunition, supposed to be delivered to the SFs fighting against the militants in South Waziristan. The troops backed by tanks and gunship helicopters moved from Jandola and Chagmalai towards Mandana on early January 24. Sources said that fighter aircraft targeted the suspected militants’ positions in Kotki village, 15 kilometers from Jandola town.

The military launched the operation after the collapse of talks between the government and local Taliban for the release of five soldiers and four truckloads of ammunition and food. A Jirga (council) failed to convince the local Taliban to cooperate. Later, tribal elders quoted Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan spokesman Maulvi Omer as saying that the trucks had been shifted to a safe place. Omer also claimed that the ammunition was enough to fight against the security forces for two years. A tribal elder said the trucks had been recovered, but the ammunition and kidnapped officials were still missing. He said the local Taliban and security forces had blocked the Indus Highway at separate points. As reported earlier, unidentified militants fled with four weapon-laden army trucks in Dara Adam Khel on January 24.

Militants in the Swat district have beheaded a local resident of Minglawar, Qayyum Shah, accusing him of spying on militants for the Pakistan Army and the US, The News reported. His beheaded body was found on the main Mingra-Kalam road near Minglawar on January 27. Maulana Omar, a spokesman for Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, claimed responsibility for the abduction and subsequently beheading. He said the local Taliban had abducted him two days ago from a hotel near Minglawar, as he was found passing on information to military officials about activities and meetings of militants in Swat. "We left a letter with his beheaded body in which we warned people found in spying on Mujahideen would meet the same fate," the militants' spokesman explained. He also claimed the responsibility for attacking the security posts at Mamad Gat, Sher Makhanao and Eeka Ghund areas of Mohmand Agency on the night between January 26 and 27.

Militant ‘commander’ Maulana Faqir Muhammad was named on January 28 the ‘political face’ of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan for the purpose of holding talks with the government and negotiate a truce, according to Daily Times. "Ameer Baitullah Mehsud has authorised Maulvi Faqir Muhammad to hold talks with the government on behalf of the new organisation (formed last year)," purported Taliban spokesman Maulana Umar told Daily Times from an undisclosed location. Faqir leads Taliban militants in the Bajaur district of FATA, overlooking Afghanistan’s Kunar province. The spokesman said the Taliban were "ready for talks" with the government.

The Taliban in Afghanistan have distanced themselves from Pakistani militants led by Baitullah Mehsud, saying they don’t support any militant activity in Pakistan, Dawn reported. "We do not support any militant activity and operation in Pakistan," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told Dawn on telephone from an undisclosed location on January 28. The spokesman denied media reports that the Taliban had expelled Baitullah Mehsud, chief of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan. "Baitullah is a Pakistani and we as the Afghan Taliban have nothing to do with his appointment or his expulsion. We did not appoint him and we have not expelled him," he said. "We have no concern with anybody joining or leaving the Taliban movement in Pakistan. Ours is an Afghan movement and we as a matter of policy do not support militant activity in Pakistan," the Taliban spokesman said. "Had he been an Afghan we would have expelled him the same way we expelled Mansoor Dadullah for disobeying the orders of Mullah Omar. But Baitullah is a Pakistani Talib and whatever he does is his decision. We have nothing to do with it," Mujahid claimed.
