On February 17, two men, allegedly a part of a “well organised” racket of Fake Indian Currency Note (FICN), were arrested by the Delhi Police special cell along with fake notes with a face value of INR 6,00,000 the Police, reports The Hindu. All of the notes were of the INR 100 denomination. Identified as Sanjeev (31) and Arvin (35), both of whom are residents of Kairana in Uttar Pradesh, were arrested from Sonia Vihar in north-east Delhi, said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (special cell).According to the Police, both the accused indulge in circulating FICN, which they received from eastern UP-based sources. They then supply these notes to prospective buyers in different States, particularly within different districts of UP and the NCR.During questioning, the duo revealed that their eastern UP-based sources procured the notes from Nepal, with the source being Pakistan, and that the supply and circulation of FICN has significantly increased over the last two to three months, Yadav said. “Due to the circulation of high-value new currency notes in India, the general public normally doesn't verify the genuineness of currency notes of Rs. 100. The recovered currency notes are apparently so fine that in day-to-day dealing, it is difficult to identify them as FICN,” said Yadav.

On May 13, a Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant, identified as Naseer Ahmed alias Sadiq (34) was apprehended at the Indo-Nepal border in Maharajganj District in Uttar Pradesh as he was trying to cross into the country to carry out terror activities, according to officials. Naseer Ahmed hailing from Banihal in Ramban District of Jammu and Kashmir, was held from Sonauli border post. He was trying to sneak into India from Nepal in the guise of a shawl and carpet vendor, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) officials said.He was carrying a Pakistani passport and an identity card of being a resident of Lala Musa village in Gujarat District in Punjab province of Pakistan, the officials said. Ahmed was handed over to the Uttar Pradesh ATS for further investigation. According to security agencies, Ahmed had joined Hizbul Mujahideen in 2002-03 and moved to Pakistan. He was involved in a number of terrorist activities. In 2002, he sustained bullet injuries during an encounter with the Army in Banihal.“Ahmed was residing in Pakistan since September, 2003. He was involved in many attacks against civilians and security forces including an attack on an STF camp in India in 2003...He was sent to India by his handler for a specific mission,” an SSB spokesperson said. When he was asked for his identity proof by the SSB personnel at Sonauli, Ahmed was unable to produce any supporting documents, the spokesperson said. The paramilitary, based on initial interrogation of the terrorist, said Ahmed and his associate Mohammad Shafi landed in Kathmandu on May 10, 2017 from Faisalabad in Pakistan via Sharjah. Shafi separated from him in Kathmandu. He was trained in unarmed combat and weapon handling at Atak in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in Pakistan by HM, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Pakistan Army “with an aim of waging war against India and to fight with Indian security forces in Jammu and Kashmir”. “Ahmed revealed he used to preach Quran to Hizbul cadres during his stay at various camps,” the spokesperson said. The SSB said Ahmed sustained two bullet injuries during an encounter with security forces in Banihal in Jammu and Kashmir in 2002. He was among the terrorists who exploded mines during polls in the same year in which two civilians and as many army personnel were killed. Ahmed was part of the terrorist team that attacked the Special Task Force camp in Ramsoo near Banihal in 2003, the spokesperson added. He will be produced by the ATS in court and his custody will be sought for further interrogation, the officer said.

A team of Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) arrested a Bangladeshi man, Abdullah al Mamon, suspected of being a member of the banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) from Uttar Pradesh (UP), on August 6, reports dhakatribune.com. According to an ATS spokesperson, four more people have been arrested following Abdullah’s arrest. Two of them were living in a madrasa (Islamic Seminary). Two were locals, while the others came from Kashmir and Bihar. Indian investigators seized several fake passports, Aadhaar cards and other official documents from Abdullah that he was also holding for other people. They also discovered official seals, duplicated signatures of important officials and copied panchayat pradhans. Indian Police said that Abdullah and his team had succeeded in laying the groundwork for spreading a terror network in the area and were moving into the second or third phase of their operations. Abdullah was also trying to marry a local girl, but his accent was an impediment, said police. He had been working as an Imam for over a year before he was removed because of his accent. The militant was living in the Deoband area of Saharanpur in UP since 2011. He moved to Muzaffarnagar District in July, 2017. Abdullah admitted to have crossed over to India through Assam. He had been active in terror sponsoring activities in Malda District and other areas of West Bengal and was linked to associates in the banned Jam’atul Mujahideen of Bangladesh (JMB) and the Islamic State (IS). He said he was working as a recruiter for the Islamic State. His work in UP as an Imam in mosques, was a cover to hide his main activity, which was to provide shelter and other help for Bangladeshi jihadis crossing over to India. In Malda and Assam, Abdullah said he was indoctrinating younger recruits to the “Islamist cause” with training in arms and the making of explosives and smuggling of weapons. Several batches of indoctrinated young men had been trained so far. The false documents he acquired had helped in establishing new assumed identities for the new recruits, who were sent to different parts of UP, Assam, West Bengal and Bangladesh, according to preliminary reports. They were allegedly carrying on the work of the JMB and similar organisations, apart from organising occasional acts of sabotage and inflaming communal violence.
