The landmines of 20 Kilogram explosives were recovered during combing operation along the 10 kilometre long Srirampur-Ora road, said Kandhamal Superintendent of Police J N Pankaj on January 14. Kandhamal Police arrested Manmohan Pradhan, the husband of the sarpanch (head of panchayat, village level local self-Government institution) of Sonepur panchayat in Daringibadi block and two others identified as Suneswar Baladamajhi and Petaguluduka for their reported involvement in Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) violence in various places in Kandhamal District on January 16, reports The Times of India. Pradhan was arrested from his home. The two other accused were arrested during anti-Maoist combing operations. While Baladamajhi is a resident of Malliguda near Kotagarh, Petaguluduka hailed from Dembaguda in Chandrapur area in Rayagada District. The Police said Pradhan was involved in planting landmines in Daringibadi Police Station area in December, 2011. He also supplied rice and other food items to the Maoists, the Police said. Baladamajhi was involved in an exchange of fire between Maoists and security personnel at Malliguda in January 2010. Petaguluduka was involved in the death of three policemen in a landmine blast at Srirampur near Kotagarh on January 5.

While Purty was arrested, others managed to flee, the Police said. Purty was involved in seven murder cases including that of a Police constable. He was also involved in four other cases. Purty was the mastermind behind the ARSS camp burning case in Sambalpur. The group was making plans to create disturbance during the Panchayat (village level local self government institution) polls, the Police said.

Two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, including a woman cadre, were killed in an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) in Koraput District on January 26, reports IBN Live. Acting on an intelligence input, troopers of District Voluntary Force (DVF) conducted a combing operation in the Bandhugaon area where a group of Maoists were spotted. As the Maoists and SF personnel came face to face, an encounter erupted in which two Maoists were killed and their bodies recovered, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG, south-west), Soumendra Priyadarshi said. One of the slain Maoists, was identified as Chitru, an ‘area commander’ of Jhanjabati division of CPI-Maoist while the other one was a woman cadre whose identity was yet to be ascertained, he said. Some arms and ammunition were also recovered from the spot.

According to Police, at least 282 gelatin sticks each weighing 125 grams, 10 bundles of live wires, 28 tiffin boxes used to make landmines, among other Maoist belongings, were found in a forest under Machhkund Police limits. Acting on a tip-off, a team comprising Border Security Force (BSF) and Special Operation Group (SOG) troopers conducted a combing operation in Tekguda forest in Kalimela area in Malkangiri District on February 7 and recovered a huge Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) explosive dump, reports Hindustan Times. The recoveries include 12 electronic detonators, seven gelatine sticks, more than 30 metres of codex wire and electric wires used in landmine blast. Acting on a tip-off that four persons were busy in planting land mines near Chumatungri for the approaching search and cordon party, Security Forces rushed to the said area and launched a quick-search operation. The four cadres identified as Lala Nag (52), Birendra Nag (20), Lesua Tenwa (26), and Obey Dhanwar (24) were arrested while trying to plant the mines near Chumatungri between Kaliaposh and Digha Road in the Police Station limits. "The seizure was made during a combing operation carried out by the elite anti-Naxal Special Operation Group (SOG) and armed police force in a jungle near Matikeda in Kotagada area," Inspector-in-Charge of Kotagada Police Station S C Pujari said. The articles recovered from the hidden dump included 79 detonators, five gelatin sticks, three wire bundles, four electric switches and several other devices used to make landmines, he said. Commenting on the operation a Senior State Police Official said the operation has been intensified in the Southern Districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal and Rayagada. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) (Southern Range) RK Sharma said "Around 300 personnel, including Central Reserve Police Forces (CRPF), Special Operation Group (SOG), District Voluntary Force (DVF) and local Police were involved in the operation," reports The Times of India on November 17. The Boder Security Force (BSF) personnel recovered four big iron pipes used to make claymore mines, about 40 kilograms of gun powder and a few metres of wires belonging to the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), during a combing operation inside the Sapalguda forest in Narayanpatna block of Koraput District close to Andhra Pradesh border on December 19, reports Zee News. "No arrest has been made so far. Possibility of the presence of more explosives in the area cannot be ruled out. We have intensified our search operations," Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Laxmipur, Y Jagannath Rao said.

One personnel of the Special Operation Group (SOG) was injured when a landmine planted by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres exploded on December 27, at Sanadengli village under Kalyansinghpur Police Station in Rayagada District, reports The Hindu. According to the Police, around 15 to 20 armed Maoists, led by one Maoist leader Sukru, planned up the ambush when the Security Force (SF) personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and SOG were involved in an anti-Maoist operation in the area. According to Rayagada Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajesh Pandit, the SOG personnel Surendranath Das received minor injuries on his face due to splinters of the landmine blast.

Two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, identified as Shrabana Gardanaka (32) and Picha Gagaranda (48), were arrested while planting landmines on Siriguda-Gumi road in Rayagada District during a combing operation on December 31, reports The Times of India. Police said a joint combing operation was launched by Odisha Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) following intelligence inputs about the presence of Maoists. Commenting on the arrest, Superintendent of Police (SP), Rayagada, Rajesh Pandit said, “The arrested Maoists are hardcore militia members and were associated with CPI (Maoist), Bansadhara Division. They were close to leaders Gobind and Nikhil and were in our wanted list for long. Two other Maoists fled from the spot.” Police recovered two landmines weighing around eight kilograms each, 50 metres of live wire and two electronic detonators from them and duo was wanted for blowing up the Dangasorada Police outpost, attacking Chandrapur Police Station and ransacking a liquor distillery, all in the year 2009.
