Security force personnel arrested more than 100 demonstrators, including 53 women and 14 journalists, from a rally at Baglung bazaar, the district headquarters of Baglung. In Arghakhanchi, normal life was affected throughout the day as vehicular movement remained disrupted, industries and other organizations remained closed due to the general strike. Thousands of villagers took out an anti-government rally at the district headquarters of Sandhikharka. Similar demonstrations were organized in Dhankuta, Ilam, Sindhupalchowk, Janakpur, Panchthar, Kaski, Jhapa, Taplejung, Dhading, Dhangadhi, Parbat and other districts.

A day earlier, hundreds of political leaders and activists, students and professionals were arrested. According to the CPN (UML), dozens of party leaders were arrested early in the morning while plainclothes police personnel searched the residences of several other leaders. Similarly, hundreds of protesting students were detained from various campuses in the capital Kathmandu. Dozens of professionals, including journalists and lawyers, were also arrested from separate rallies organised in Kathmandu.

Nepal News reports that over 400 pro-democracy protesters and journalists were arrested in Kathmandu while dozens of others were injured on the first day of the four-day nationwide general strike called by the seven-party alliance (SPA) on April 6. Violent protests were reported from the Kalanki, Naya Baneshwor, Chabahil and Kirtipur areas where the protesters set ablaze tyres on the streets while the police baton-charged and fired several rounds of tear gas shells to disrupt the protests. Other reports added that marketplaces, industries, schools and colleges remained closed in the capital and no vehicles, except for the diplomatic and UN vehicles, plied throughout the day. The Home Ministry, meanwhile, said that 167 persons were arrested while defying the prohibitory orders effective within the Ring Road area in Kathmandu and Lalitpur.

Protests continued on the second day of the four-day nationwide strike against King Gyanendra being organised by the seven-party alliance. The district post office in Lalitpur was reportedly set ablaze and students at the Tribhuvan University in Kirtipur ransacked the Dean’s office and briefly held several officers hostage. Public transport, shops and schools across the country were reportedly shut. Presidents of Government and corporation employees’ unions said they have extended support to the movement to safeguard their professional and trade union rights. They said employees of the Nepal Electricity Authority, various corporations and banking sectors stopped work on April 7 to express solidarity with the movement. A number of protestors were arrested in Jumla, Morang, Pokhara, Lamjung, Hetauda, Chitwan, Lahan, Kalaiya, Baglung, Charikot, Dipayal and Butwal. Normal life was also reportedly affected in the Surkhet, Rautahat, Gorkha and Tanahun districts.

Over 150 persons, including leaders of the seven-party alliance, prominent human rights activists and student leaders, were arrested on January 19 to prevent the alliance’s rally planned in the capital Kathmandu on January 20, today. Home Ministry spokesperson Gopendra Bahadur Pandey said 100 persons were detained from different parts of the Kathmandu Valley. Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala and CPN-UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal were put under house-arrest and the rest were taken to detention centres. The Government also switched off mobile phone services, privately-run UTL phone and the landline telephone service after January 18-midnight. Talking to the media, Minister for Home Affairs Kamal Thapa said these services will resume after the situation becomes normal.

According to Daily News and Analysis, the Kathmandu District Court has remanded two Pakistani nationals, who were arrested on the charges of possessing explosives, to five-day judicial custody for further investigations. Gulam Hussein Shina of Lahore and Atta Muhaddin Siddhiqui of Karachi were arrested in Kathmandu on July 12 on charges of smuggling 16 kg RDX, which was seized by police in the capital in April 2001. Daily Star quoted Sharad Oli, deputy superintendent of Kathmandu police as saying, “We will also investigate their possible links in the Mumbai blasts during interrogation. We can't say anything at the moment.”

Gajurel on September 18, immediately after he was released from the Chennai central jail in the State of Tamil Nadu in southern India, after serving a three-year sentence. According to BBC Nepali Service, Indian authorities decided to detain Gajurel for one more day in view of the West Bengal Government's request to hand him over to them. Two criminal cases are pending against Gajurel in the State of West Bengal in eastern India.
