At least sixty-four civilians, including 15 children, were killed and eighty-six others were injured when a state-run passenger bus carrying 150 passengers was destroyed in a twin side-charger claymore mine explosion in the Anuradhapura district on June 15. The Government's spokesperson on security issues, Keheliya Rambukwella, blamed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for the attack saying, "There is no iota of doubt that it is the LTTE." He also said, "There is no declaration of War, the peace agreement is on, but, we have to look at it very seriously", adding that the Government would not hesitate to take military action if needed, to safeguard the civilians. Subsequent to the attack, security forces (SFs) carried out an aerial attack in the LTTE-held Sampoor and Maullativu area and drooped bombs near the outfit headquarters of Kilinochchi on June 16, today. However, no casualties were reported in these incidents. Meanwhile, the LTTE denied its involvement and blamed the Government for the attack. Reacting to the SFs aerial attack, head of the outfit’s peace secretariat, S. Puleedevan, told Reuters, "If they are attacking Kilinochchi, they are showing they are ready for war."

Five Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers were killed and four others sustained injuries when cadres of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) launched an artillery and mortar attack towards troops in the Muhamalai area of Jaffna district on October 8. Troops retaliated with artillery and mortar and repulsed the attack. The outfit’s military spokesperson, Rasiah Ilanthirayan, told BBC Sandeshaya that they launched an attack on a reconnaissance team of the SLA who tried to enter the outfit-held territory through Muhamalai and claimed that there were no LTTE casualties, adding, “We believe the military is gathering intelligence in preparation for a bigger offensive in the north.” Denying LTTE accusation, military spokesperson, Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe, told BBC Sandeshaya that the LTTE launched artillery attacks on SLA positions near Muhamalai Forward Defense Line (FDL), adding, “We don’t need to enter LTTE-held territories. We only retaliated when they attacked our position.”

The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) destroyed a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) trawler, transporting weapons, ammunition and explosives, about 35 nautical miles in the seas off Arippu West in the Mannar district, killing six of the outfit cadres on October 15. Three SLN personnel sustained injuries in the incident. The Government Media Center said that the SLN after detecting a suspicious trawler fired warning shots, adding, “Instead of heeding the warning shots, the trawler fired back, injuring three fishermen in the former trawler and also compelled the Dvora to fire back, resulting in the trawler exploding.” Military spokesperson Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said, "We suspect the destroyed vessel was transporting a large cache of arms since there were huge blasts from inside the vessel before it blew up. The trawler was heading towards the Silavathura area in Mannar," adding, "Six on board the suspicious vessel were reportedly killed and three sailors sustained injuries in the encounter."
