|
A suicide bomber blew himself
up outside Hotel Marriott in the capital Islamabad, killing a
guard, Tariq Mehmmod, and wounding five persons. The unidentified
man detonated explosives strapped to his body after the security
guard tried to stop him from entering the hotel through a side
entrance. "It was a suicide attack. The suicide attacker and a
guard were killed," Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao said.

Islamabad police arrested 40 students
of a Madrassa (seminary) in connection with a protest demonstration
by the banned Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM)
held during the visit of an All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC)
delegation. Islamabad Senior Superintendent of Police Sikandar
Hayat said the police initially arrested 100 students, of which
40 were identified with the help of a video of the protest. The
students had protested against the APHC, which supports resolution
of the Kashmir issue through dialogue.

A suicide attacker blew himself
up in the car park of Islamabad airport, killing himself and injuring
10 people, mostly Security Force personnel. Police officials said
the attacker arrived at the airport close to 8:50 pm in a taxi
with two other people and was stopped for checking by Airport
Security Force officials who asked for his identification. The
man opened fire at the guards and then ran towards the VIP lounge
of the airport forcing the security officials to return fire,
which led to an explosion.

The Government claimed to have
traced a network of terrorists allegedly involved in the killings
of former Member of National Assembly Maulana Azam Tariq (chief
of the outlawed Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan [SSP],
provincial minister Pir Binyamin and 41 other people in various
incidents that occurred in Punjab and Islamabad between 2003 and
2006. "Two members of the network have been arrested by Islamabad
Police’s CID department from Sector G-6/2 and efforts are being
made to catch their six accomplices who are reported to be hiding
in the capital," said a senior interior ministry official.
The arrested were identified as Mudassar Ali alias Usman Chaudhry
and Mohammad Ali alias Abbas.

The pro-Taliban Lal Masjid (Red
mosque) in Islamabad took four police personnel hostage, accusing
them of spying for the Government. Later in the night, police
registered an FIR against the two Lal Masjid clerics and 72 of
their followers, citing terrorism and other charges.

Junaid Shah, a Deputy Director-General
in the communications department, and Malik Shaukat Ali, a Pakistani
origin British national, were injured when terrorist lobbed a
bomb over the boundary wall of the former’s residence in the Bhara
Kahu area of Islamabad.

Students of the pro-Taliban Lal
Masjid and Jamia Hafsa seminary raided a Chinese massage centre
in the Sector F-8/3 area of Islamabad and took hostage five Chinese
nationals, including three women and two men. Two vehicles full
of armed seminary students reportedly raided the massage centre,
abducted the staff and brought them to the mosque. Geo TV reported
Jamia Hafsa administration as alleging that a brothel was being
run under the garb of the massage centre.

12 people were killed and around
150 injured in a daylong shootout between Madrassa (seminary)
students and Security Force personnel near the pro-Taliban Lal
Masjid. The administration confirmed that a journalist, one soldier
of the para-military Rangers, a businessman, seminary students
and bystanders were among the dead.

A senior Pakistani army commando,
Colonel Haroon Islam, was shot dead by Islamist militants besieged
in the Lal Masjid in Islamabad, said Major General Waheed Arshad,
head of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). He "was supervising
the operation and got injured and expired in the hospital," said
Arshad, adding, another army official was injured during the operation
to blow up part of the wall surrounding the fortified mosque complex.

A suicide bomber struck outside
the venue of a lawyers rally in Islamabad, killing 16 people and
injuring at least 63, including 10 police officials. Interior
Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao said "It was apparently
a suicide bombing." The powerful blast went off at about
8:27 pm outside the main entrance of the corridor leading to the
venue of the event in F-8 Markaz, shortly before Chief Justice
Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was to pass through the site to give
a speech to lawyers of the Islamabad District Bar Association.

|
Police in the national capital
arrested five terrorists involved in the suicide bombing at Ayub
and Aabpara markets in July 2007. Inspector General Police Iftikhar
Ahmad Chaudhry said at a press conference that two jackets containing
suicide belts, hand grenades and firearms were recovered from
their possession. He informed that two of the suspects had direct
links with Lal Masjid and they have been staying there.

20 people were killed in a bomb
blast in a high-security military area in Tarbela Ghazi near Islamabad.
The bomb exploded in the mess of Karar Company of the Special
Services Group. The communication and wireless system of security
agencies was also reportedly affected by the explosion. Two unnamed
intelligence officials said that it was a suicide attack, and
that the bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the canteen
where dozens of commandos were having dinner. The Tarbela facility,
about 100km south of Islamabad, is the headquarters of the SOTF,
a unit of the Pakistan Army's elite Special Services Group, which
had been set up with American aid to neutralise al Qaeda. Media
reports stated that the Karar Company had participated in the
Lal Masjid operation.

Islamabad Police foiled an attempt
to blow up the Police Lines after finding defused hand grenades
and detonators planted on its premises, reported ARY TV.
The Senior Superintendent of Police confirmed the incident, saying
militants had planted explosives in the Police Lines firing range.

The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) reports
that eight persons, including five schoolchildren, were injured
when a suicide bomber exploded his car targeting a Pakistan Aeronautical
Complex (PAC) bus carrying air force employees’ children at a
military base at Kamra about 50 kilometres northwest of Islamabad.

Rashid Rauf, allegedly involved
in a London terror plot to blow up transatlantic flights in August
2006, disappeared from outside a local court in Islamabad, where
he was brought from the Adiala Jail for a hearing. Official sources
confirmed he was brought to the court of Zafar Awan in Islamabad
for hearing of a case and when he was being guarded by two policemen,
he managed to escape.
