Indian Army’s 12 Para Special Force commandos killed three militants between Wangla village and Oting village under Mon district on December 3, reports Nagaland Post. The militants reportedly belonging to a joint team of Aung Yung led Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) and United Liberation Front of Asom-Independence (ULFA-I). According to security sources, the 12 PARA commandos laid an ambush after receiving specific inputs about movements of around six cadres along with a civilian, reportedly a guide. Body of one of the militants has been recovered so far. Combing operations are still under way.

The entire State of Nagaland has been declared ‘disturbed area’ for six more months, till June-end (2019), under the controversial Armed Forces [Special Powers] Act (AFSPA), which empowers Security Forces (SFs) to conduct operations anywhere and arrest anyone without any prior notice, reports The Hindu on January 1. In a notification, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (UMHA) said the Central Government is of the opinion that the area comprising the whole of State of Nagaland is in such a disturbed and dangerous condition that the use of armed forces in aid of civilian power is necessary. “Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (No. 28 of 1958), the Central government hereby declares that whole of the said State to be a ‘disturbed area’ for a period of six months with effect from 30th December, 2018, for the purpose of that Act,” the notification said.
