This led to a fierce gun battle between the militants on one side and Imphal West commandos and Manipur Rifles (MR) personnel on the other. On June 2, the Government of Manipur released an official statement saying that at least 98 people lost their lives and 310 others were injured in the ethnic violence in Manipur that broke out a month ago, reports East Mojo. The statement further said that a total of 37,450 people are in 272 relief camps at present and over the last one month, the state police has registered 3,734 cases and arrested 65 people for their involvement in the violence. So far, 144 arms with 11 magazines have been recovered by the security agencies, said the statement.

The operations have so far resulted in recovery of 40 weapons (mostly automatic), mortars, ammunition and other warlike stores. The notification read, “...in exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952 (60 of 1952), the Central Government hereby appoint a Commission of Inquiry consisting of — Ajai Lamba, former chief justice of Gauhati high court (as chairperson), Das and Prabhakar.” The panel, which will be headquartered in Imphal, has been asked to submit its report “as soon as possible” but not later than six months, according to the notification.

SF personnel on a routine patrol of the village, on the border of Kangpoki and Imphal West Districts, stepped in when they heard the sound of gunfire. Insurgents fled the area but not before shooting down three villagers, the officials said. The bodies were recovered by Assam Rifles. On June 24, the Manipur Government transferred the Kwakta blast case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) citing the suspected involvement of insurgents operating in the state and across the border, reports Imphal Free Press. Two civilians were killed and four others were injured in an Impoverished Explosive Device (IED) blast that occurred in a vehicle in south of Kwakta on the Bridge near Ward No. 9 in Bishnupur District of Manipur on June 21. Considering the strong suspicion of the involvement of insurgents operating within the state and beyond its borders, the case has been handed over to the NIA for further investigation.
