On February 1, two cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were killed in an encounter with the police personnel in the forest areas of Peruru in Vajedu mandal (administrative division) of Khammam district, reports New Indian Express. The forest area is situated on the the Khammam-Chattisgarh border. A self loading rifle and a .303 rifle were recovered from the killed Maoists. Police said that they are yet to establish the identity of the killed Maoists.

Five security force (SF) personnel including a civilian were killed, on February 8 in a powerful landmine explosion at Bhairamgarh in Bijapur. The SF personnel were trying to defuse explosives earlier recovered in the area, suspected to have been planted by the cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist). Dantewada superintendent of police Om Prakash Pal said, “While the security forces were examining the already defused bomb after disconnecting it, another hidden bomb exploded.” Four among the dead are from Nagaland Armed Police, which included its superintendent of police. The IGP in-charge of anti-Maoist operations Girdhari Nayak told Hindustan Times that this is an unusual entrapment by the Maoists.

On February 9, the Sambalpur district police said that they found and removed anti-panchayat (village level body) election material, reportedly circulated by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres. According to Telegraph, A banner saying “Boycott polls and assert your democratic right” spotted at a temple near Bareipani Industrial Estate of Sambalpur town was removed on February 8. Maoist cadres reportedly had also distributed leaflets and posters in the Dasmati Colony, Stationpara, Malipara and Mudipara areas.

The arrested have been identified as Golla Prasanna Babu alias Raju, Pidugu Prathap alias Naresh alias Sekhar (27), N.Thyagaraju alias Jayachandra alias Eswar, Gandhala Munaiah alias Bhaskar alias Suryam, Mallepuvvu Suneetha and Manchali Harijana Lalappa. Police sources said that a dozen naxalite cadres approached the company’s camp and burnt down the vehicles after asking the workers to come out of the camp. Keonjhar Superintendent of Police, Ghanashyam Upadhyay said, “It seems they had earlier asked for some money from the supervisor. But he refused and they burnt the vehicles as an act of revenge.”

According to Kalinga Times, a suspected Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre was killed in the Malkangiri district on the eve of the three-tier panchayat (local self-government) polls in Orissa on February 12. The incident took place when a police party heading for the Badigata polling booth under Kalimela police station of Malkangiri was attacked by the Maoists from inside the Kurup forests. One of the Maoists was killed as police personnel opened retaliatory fire. Police claimed to have recovered a grenade, explosives, literatures, kit bags and polythene sheets from the encounter site.
