At least eight civilians, who went missing from a temple, are feared killed in the Thenmarachchi area of Jaffna district on May 7. The Jaffna district Tamil National Alliance Member of Parliament, Nataraja Raviraj, told BBC Sandeshaya that eight civilians attending a ceremony at a temple in the Manthuvil village were missing overnight. He also said, “People have heard gunshots and blood traces and bullets were found near the temple,” and added that the local residents accused the Sri Lanka military of abducting young men attending the religious ceremony. However, the military spokesperson, Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe, denied the accusations. He told BBC Tamil service, “Definitely the Army will not do a thing like that in a temple; rather the Army will never kill civilians.” Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Defence Ministry has announced imposing curfew from May 7-midnight to May 8-evening and closing entry point at Muhamalai.

At least 13 civilians, including a four-month and a four-year old child, were killed by suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres in two incidents in the Kayts Island of Jaffna district on May 13. In the first incident, nine members of two families were shot dead. The police also recovered four bodies with bullet wounds from the same area and said that all the murders are connected. The LTTE, however, accused the military for the attack, an allegation which the security forces (SFs) denied. Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Government condemning the incident stated, "The ruthless killing of Tamil civilians could very well be a part of the LTTE strategy to divert the international opinion… Initial investigations have revealed that an informant who worked with a political group and his family members were gunned down brutally.”
