Troops overrun the Akkarayankulam built-up area in the Kilinochchi district on November 5, Daily News reports. Troops entered the area from two flanks and the operation is still continued in the eastern edge of Akkarayankulam. During subsequent search operations troops recovered the dead bodies of two Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militants along with two T-56 assault riffles and an I-com set, military sources said. The Akkarayankulam built-up area is considered to be the main LTTE concentration point located 9-kms southwest of Kilinochchi town area. Troops have now advanced towards the Pooneryn area of Kilinochchi after capturing most of north-west coast of the LTTE stronghold with retreating Tigers leaving behind vehicles and military equipment during intense clashes, the defence ministry said.

Troops of the 58 Division on November 11 moved further towards Pooneryn after capturing the Valayakudiyurippumoddai defence line in the Kilinochchi district held by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for the past few days, killing over 30 militants and capturing five dead bodies of the militants. This came hours after the security forces (SFs) captured the Palavi fishing village in the west of Mannar-Pooneryn A-32 road, military sources told Daily News. According to military sources, heavy fighting erupted in the Valayakudiyurippumoddai defence line located some four kilometres east of Chempankundu on the A-32 road and five kilometres south of Pooneryn-Paranthan road. This military success allows the troops to advance towards the vital Pooneryn Paranthan road which is the northernmost supply route linking the Western coast to the A-9 road. Hours before the capture of this defence line the 58 Division operating in the Western edge of the Kilinochchi district dominated the Palavi fishing village the last fishing village before Pooneryn on the Western coast of the country, located some six and half kilometres west of the 8th Mile Post on the A-32 road. The LTTE is left with only Valaipadu and Devil’s Point on the Western coast as their unloading points in the Western coast before Pooneryn, the northern most township on the Western coast.

Troops on November 13-morning captured the entire triangular Devil’s Point to the west of A-32 Mannar–Pooneryn road in the Kilinochchi district, reported Sri Lanka Army. This geographically unique Sea Tiger [sea wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)] base with Valaipadu as the main fishing town was of strategic value to the outfit, since this extreme coastal point offered them a distinct and direct view of their northern Pooneryn strongholds and newly liberated north-western coastal areas towards central Mannar to the south. The fall of Devil’s Point makes the land stretch along the A-32 road now free of LTTE militants, enabling the troops to march further up towards the LTTE stronghold of Pooneryn.

Pooneryn, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) bastion in Northern Province, fell to the troops advancing amid heavy resistance on November 15-morning, the military said, according to Colombo Page. Defence sources said the troops are still fighting pitch battles in the area. According to the military, infantrymen of 12 Gamunu Watch (12 GW) and 10 Gajaba Regiment (10 GR) crossed the hostile marshlands in south of Pooneryn on November 14-night and cut off the Pooneryn-Paranthan road (B-69) close to Nallur before dawn on November 15. Troops then marched about 10-kilometers along the B-69 and entered into the Pooneryn town. Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Air Force MI-24 helicopters and fighter jets carried out a series of raids on LTTE artillery and mortar positions in the Muhamalai area of Jaffna district on November 15- morning in support of the army troops clearing up the captured Pooneryn area. Troops of Task Force 1 took control of Pooneryn and are now engaged in clearing up operations towards Kalmunai Point (K-Point) along the 20-km long narrow land stretch where the LTTE used to station their artillery and mortar batteries, the military said. The LTTE used Pooneryn as a launching pad to fire artillery barrages into Jaffna peninsula and taking control of Pooneryn will also give the troops an easy access to LTTE-held territory. Troops have earlier captured the coastal LTTE base in Devil’s Point along with the Sea Tiger (sea wing of the LTTE) bases at Kiranchi Valaipadu and Palavi. Task Force 1 is now advancing to capture the northwestern coast of the island from Mannar to Pooneryn and open the land route of A-32 to connect the Jaffna peninsula to the mainland.

Heavy fighting erupted when the troops launched a pre-dawn attack on terrorists in Adampan, 7.5-km west of Kilinochchi. Troops, in the meantime, neutralising LTTE strong points in Pudumurippukulam west of Kilinochchi fought a fierce battle with the militants who withdrew further north. Troops advancing towards Murikkandy junction along the Akkarayankulam road were also able to dominate a road stretch more than 1-km by November 23.
