According to The Post, at least eleven more persons, including seven non local Taliban, have died and 13 persons injured during the on-going sectarian clashes in the Kurram Agency of FATA while clashes continue for the 12th conservative day. The curfew imposed on November 16, 2007 has reportedly not been relaxed so far, owing to which routine life has been paralysed in the entire Agency. The main Tull and Parachinar highway has been closed for the last 48 days due to which edible items and medicines are not available in Kurram Agency and road links to the various tribal areas are also disconnected. Local people said that militants from adjoining areas of North Waziristan and Hangu district in NWFP attacked the Manguk and Tangai villages on January 1-night, Dawn reported. Meanwhile, army and paramilitary troops have taken positions on hilltops to enforce a cease-fire in the area while a peace jirga continued its efforts for a truce. Sources said that deployment of troops had begun in the Balishkhel and Sadda areas while more contingents of the army had moved into Alizai town.

Security forces (SFs) launched a search operation against militants in the Swat district of the NWFP on January 3 and arrested more than 70 suspected militants, including local Taliban Commander Ikramuddin. Sources told The News that SFs in an operation at Shakardara in the Matta sub-division arrested 63 persons and confiscated heavy weapons from them. The troops also blew up two houses of suspected militants in the area. The military, however, confirmed the arrests of 44 suspected militants only. Ikramuddin, a close aide of the TNSM leader Maulana Fazlullah, was allegedly involved in the beheading of police officials in the Swat valley.

The Interior Ministry has warned security agencies that militants of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) and Taliban are plotting to attack eminent political and religious leaders and religious places in nine cities during Muharram, Daily Times reported. "Yes, we have received these threats," said acting Islamabad police Inspector General Nadeem Baloch. Two intelligence reports received by the ministry said attacks were likely in Islamabad, Peshawar, Bahawalpur, Vehari, Jhang, Hyderabad, Karachi, Dera Ismail Khan and Quetta. A notification by the National Crisis Management Cell of the Interior Ministry said militants would try to attack Muharram processions, Imambargahs and Majalis. The intelligence reports stated that Senator Abid Hussain, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid ex-MNA from Jhang, Waqas Akram Sheikh, and Allama Sajid Naqvi are likely targets. Three jackets meant for suicide attacks have been delivered to LeJ cadres in Jhang, it added. According to the reports, 300 militants from tribal areas, including local and Afghan Taliban, have been assigned targets and sent to the settled areas.

Security forces claimed to have killed about 90 militants in two different encounters in the Ladha area of South Waziristan on January 18, according to The Post. According to Dawn, in the first incident, militants attacked a convoy on the Jandola-Wana road in Chagmalai at 12.30pm. Troops returned fire and between 20 and 30 assailants were killed. Four security force personnel were injured and two vehicles were damaged. Further, security forces attacked a large number of militants who had gathered to attack the Laddah fort and killed up to 60 of them, the military said. Military spokesman Major General Athar Abbass said "Our soldiers have bravely guarded the Ladha Fort. They were attacked from mountain tops but they retaliated with heavy weaponry including artillery, killing about 90 insurgents," he stated. He added that the SFs suffered no casualties. However, Taliban sources have dismissed the government claim and described the reports about the casualties on the part of Taliban as part of the propaganda to boost-up what they called as the shattered morale of the security forces.

The caretaker NWFP Health Minister Syed Kamal Shah survived a firing incident while driving on the Mardan-Bakhshali road on January 23, The News reported. The Taliban militants operating in the area are suspected of involvement in the attack on the life of the minister. Police sources said Health Minister Kamal Shah was returning to his hometown Mardan from Bakhshali village where he had gone to offer condolences to a government employee, Zafar, on the death of his mother. Near Mardan, unknown armed men apparently sitting in ambush started firing on his official car. However, they were unable to hit the minister’s car but instead shot at the police vehicle and wounded a policeman.

The military launched the operation after the collapse of talks between the government and local Taliban for the release of five soldiers and four truckloads of ammunition and food. A Jirga (council) failed to convince the local Taliban to cooperate. Later, tribal elders quoted Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan spokesman Maulvi Omer as saying that the trucks had been shifted to a safe place. Omer also claimed that the ammunition was enough to fight against the security forces for two years. A tribal elder said the trucks had been recovered, but the ammunition and kidnapped officials were still missing. He said the local Taliban and security forces had blocked the Indus Highway at separate points. As reported earlier, unidentified militants fled with four weapon-laden army trucks in Dara Adam Khel on January 24.

Around 20 militants were killed by the troops during clashes in the Darra Adam Khel and Kohat areas of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on January 26, according to Daily Times. Gunship helicopters pounded suspected Taliban positions in the mountains near Darra Adam Khel and Kohat district, eyewitnesses and the military spokesman said. Security officials said the militants had taken position at hilltops overlooking Darra and Kohat and were using long-range rockets to target civilians in Kohat city. Meanwhile, Abdullah Halafi, a self-proclaimed spokesman for a Taliban group, threatened the militants would launch attacks on government forces in the Khyber Agency if attacks on their comrades in Darra did not stop. Military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said that the Kohat Tunnel was in the control of militants. Abbas said security forces were progressing and operation for the control of the tunnel would be launched any time soon. Reports, however, said the tunnel – also known as the Pak-Japan Friendship Tunnel – was only attacked and damaged by militants. The extent of damage to the tunnel was, however, not clear.

The tribesmen also said that there was a curfew-like situation in Darra Adam Khel as 80 percent of the population of the semi-tribal valley has fled homes for safer places in Kohat and the provincial capital Peshawar. Taliban had taken control of the guns-manufacturing Darra town, some 40-km south of the provincial metropolis, several months ago. On January 24, they snatched four arms-laden trucks that were en route to South Waziristan to supply arms to the Pakistan Army troops. The incident forced the security forces to launch a massive operation to retrieve the trucks on January 25, which continued till January 28. On January 27, the security forces had recaptured the key road tunnel. Up to 24 militants and eight soldiers were reportedly killed in the clashes on January 27.

A missile apparently fired by a pilot-less plane hit a house in a village near Mir Ali in North Waziristan late on January 28-night, killing 15 people - 10 suspected militants, two women and three minors, according to The News. Intelligence sources said those killed also included Arab nationals but their identity was not known. A militant source told Daily Times by phone that five men "speaking the language of the holy Quran" were among the dead, suggesting that Arab militants were among the victims. The targeted house was in Khushali Torikhel, 12 kilometers south of Mir Ali town. The owner of the house, Madad Khan, believed to be a Taliban militant, survived the attack while his guests sleeping in the Hujra (male guesthouse) died in the missile strike at 1:15 am, and so did two women and three minors of his family. It was not clear where the missiles were fired from, Daily Times reported. Residents, however, claimed that an unmanned spy plane, of a type often used by US forces in Afghanistan, was involved in the attack. The plane is capable of firing missiles and taking photographs from a considerable altitude. "We recognise the sound and shape of the American drone and two such planes have been hovering in the sky since Monday afternoon, and people have seen them over Mir Ali and Miranshah," said local residents.

Asking not to be named for fear of reprisal, the Mazeedkhel resident told Daily Times that the militants had set up around eight training camps in different parts of Darra Adam Khel, adding that foreign militants were imparting training to members of the local Taliban there. Six militant outfits appear to be operating in Darra Adam Khel, with two having extended their sway to within 20 kilometers of Peshawar, officials and residents fleeing the area said on January 28, according to Daily Times. Darra Adam Khel, 40 kilometers south of Peshawar, capital of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), is well known for illegal arms dealing. The Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM), Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), the Muslim United Army International and the local Taliban have been "active in the area since mid-2005," said a former Darra resident, who used to live near a militant stronghold in Mazeedkhel.

The Taliban in Afghanistan have distanced themselves from Pakistani militants led by Baitullah Mehsud, saying they don’t support any militant activity in Pakistan, Dawn reported. "We do not support any militant activity and operation in Pakistan," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told Dawn on telephone from an undisclosed location on January 28. The spokesman denied media reports that the Taliban had expelled Baitullah Mehsud, chief of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan. "Baitullah is a Pakistani and we as the Afghan Taliban have nothing to do with his appointment or his expulsion. We did not appoint him and we have not expelled him," he said. "We have no concern with anybody joining or leaving the Taliban movement in Pakistan. Ours is an Afghan movement and we as a matter of policy do not support militant activity in Pakistan," the Taliban spokesman said. "Had he been an Afghan we would have expelled him the same way we expelled Mansoor Dadullah for disobeying the orders of Mullah Omar. But Baitullah is a Pakistani Talib and whatever he does is his decision. We have nothing to do with it," Mujahid claimed.

Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud said in an interview with Al Jazeera that he wanted to destroy the White House, New York and London, according to Daily Times. "Very soon, we will be witnessing jihad’s miracles," he said in his first-ever television interview. "Our primary aim is to finish Britain [and] the US, and to crush the pride of the non-Muslims," Baitullah told Admad Zaidan, Al Jazeera bureau chief in Islamabad, at an undisclosed location. Baitullah Mehsud accused President Pervez Musharraf of working for the interests of "the nonbelievers". He said his coalition would fight back and "teach him a lesson". Mehsud said the Taliban coalition was carrying out a "defensive jihad". "The army is bombarding our houses and fighting with us," he said, adding "We have formed this coalition to guarantee the safety of civilians."
