An alleged arms supplier to the Maoists, identified as Ravi Kumar Chevori, was arrested from Cyberabad near Hyderabad on January 1, a senior police official said. He had entered into a deal with the Maoists to supply arms and ammunition worth INR 40 lakh, which the city police seized on December 28, 2006, and arrested three persons, said Police Commissioner S. P. S. Yadav. During interrogation, the three accused revealed the name of Chevori, Yadav disclosed, adding Police teams were then dispatched to Hyderabad to arrest him. He had taken an advance of INR 7 lakh from the Maoists against supply of ammunition worth INR 40 lakh. Chevori was remanded to Police custody till January 10. The matter is still under investigation and a possibility of Pakistani link is also being probed, Yadav added.

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) on January 6 blasted coffee pulping units at Teegalabanda and Pedavalasa villages in G.K. Veedhi mandal and took away nearly 350 bags of graded coffee beans with them. The attack was carried out in protest against the December 27 killing of its top leaders, Wadkapur Chandramouli, and his wife Karuna, in the agency area, even as the Chief Minister was on a visit to the city. Members of the Galikonda area committee and local guerrilla squad reportedly participated in the attacks. The coffee pulping unit at Teegalabanda was blasted around 10.30 p.m. with the help of a landmine and an hour later another unit at Pedavalasa was destroyed.

In a press release, Superintendent of Police J.G. Murali informed that 100-kg of nuts and bolts meant to be used as projectiles in land mines, meters, switches, long life batteries and other battery cells, wire bundles, screw drivers, cutters, syrups, disposable syringes, etc., were found packed in 11 bags.

A leader of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist was shot dead by suspected Maoists (CPI-Maoist) in the Belpahari area of West Midnapur district on January 9, according to Times of India. Birpur zonal committee member Palaram Tudu was killed when the attackers opened fire at him on a paddy field in the Jamjhulka village under Belpahari police station, Inspector General of Police (Law and order), Raj Kanojia, said. "We are not ruling out the involvement of the Maoists," he stated. The Belpahiri region, which has reportedly witnessed landmine blasts in recent months, has been identified by the State administration as Maoist-infested.

Andhra Pradesh Police, on January 11, killed two cadres belonging to the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), including a woman, during an encounter in the Kotapalli forest area near the Andhra Pradesh-Chhattisgarh border in the Khammam district. According to Indian Express, the encounter occurred after a police party came across a Maoist den during a routine patrol. Five other Maoists, however, managed to escape. Two rifles, some ammunition and Maoist literature was recovered from the incident site.

According to The Hindu, police arrested a person at Khammam in Andhra Pradesh on January 11 and recovered spare parts of rifles from him. After his confession, a Maoist den in Rourkela was raided. A laptop, party literature, CDs and parts that could be assembled into over a dozen rifles, were seized. Police sources said that the top leadership of Maoists frequented the gun-making unit.

Unconfirmed sources said that a senior second rung leader Betharaju Narasimha alias Mukku Ravi alias Janardhan of Mallareddygudem in Samsthan Narayanapur mandal was among those killed. Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar said that two to four Maoists might have managed to escape. An AK-47, one carbine, one stengun, one tapancha (country-made revolver), three grenades and kitbags were recovered from the encounter site. It is not clear whether the Maoists, who had suffered a series of set backs in recent times, gathered there for a district committee meeting.

The security forces were clearing their way by removing the trees felled on the highway near MV-126 village under the Kalimela police station limits. The Maoists had felled the trees on the previous night in protest against the Republic Day celebrations in the area, official sources said. After triggering the blast, Maoists hiding in the nearby forest areas opened fire on the police leading to a hour-long exchange pf fire. It was, however, immediately not known whether any Maoist was killed in the encounter.

Police sources informed Pioneer that 230 rounds were fired by SF personnel and 50 by the Maoists adding that the arrested Maoists were identified as Ramesh, Laxmi and Magama. They were of Telugu origin and literature written in Telugu was recovered from their possession. Large quantity of explosives, a solar phone, electronic detonators and fuse wire were also recovered from their hideout.
