The Election Commission (EC) said that the failure to show one percent voter support has been the top reason for candidature rejection during the scrutiny of nomination submissions by returning officers, reports Dhaka Tribune on December 5. A total of 321 candidates – all independent – were rejected over it, according to the Election Management wing of the EC. The second most popular reason for rejection was loan defaults, with 129 candidates being turned down as a result. A total of 3,065 nominations were submitted by aspiring candidates for the 11th general election this year, slated for December 30. Among them, 2,567 were affiliated with political parties, while 498 were independent. A total of 2,279 nominations were accepted, and 786 rejected during scrutiny. Of the rejected candidates, 141 were BNP, three Awami League, 38 Jatiya Party, 220 belonged to miscellaneous parties, and 384 were independent candidates. Among political parties, loan defaults remain the prime cause of rejection, with a long list of BNP candidates being refused due to the infringement. Meanwhile, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s nomination was rejected as she is currently facing a jail term of over two years.

However, the chief election commissioner and three other election commissioners rejected the appeals. Returning officers in Feni and Bogura had rejected Khaleda’s nomination papers for Feni 1, Bogura 6 and Bogura 7 on grounds of her conviction in criminal cases.
