On August 29, the Andhra Pradesh Police arrested eight alleged Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists, including the Hyderabad-based president of the Tehreek Tehfooz Shariat-e-Islam, Naseeruddin, from two separate places of the capital Hyderabad. An unspecified amount of explosives, a car and four motorcycles were reportedly seized from them. According to the Hyderabad police commissioner, R P Singh, by arresting these terrorists, a major plan to attack Americans visiting the State and incite communal tension through a series of explosions during the forthcoming Ganesha festival in the city was averted. The group also planned to target Jews and had reconnoitered the houses of some Jewish families in the Guntur district, the commissioner added. Singh also said that "Naseeruddin has been working clandestinely on behalf of LeT and their leaders Abdul Bari alias Abu Hamza and Shahed alias Abu Nidal, both natives of Hyderabad, currently operating from Saudi Arabia."

In the State, Ghulam Mohammed Abbas Azad, younger brother of the Union Parliamentary Affairs and Urban Development Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, escaped unhurt while one of his Personal Security Officers was wounded in a terrorist attack at Changa in the Gandoh area of Doda district. Sources in Doda said that two terrorists intercepted Abbas Azad and his son Muzaffar Abbas when they were heading towards Changa to open their shop from their house at Soti. Sources added that preliminary investigations revealed that Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) ‘commander’ Tariq Mattoo, an erstwhile neighbour of Abbas Azad, had masterminded the attack. Mattoo is a top HM cadre who has been active in Gandoh and other parts of Doda for last several years. Terrorists also fired a rifle grenade targeting the residence of Ghulam Nabi, brother of the State Power Minister, Mohammed Sharief Niaz, at village Kahara in Gandoh. The grenade, however, missed the intended target and exploded without causing any harm.
