The National Investigation Agency (NIA) investigation revealed that Mir Anaas Ali had searched YouTube and other sites frequently on how to join Islamic State (IS), news9live.com reports on August 2. Mir Anaas Ali from Ambur was arrested by NIA on July 30, 2022. He was added to Telegram group of IS seeing his interest. He had downloaded membership forms and was planning to join the banned organisation, said a Police officer who was part of the interrogation team. The officer said Ali had reportedly communicated with people in London (UK), Morocco and other places and a probe is on to find out who he spoke to and what their background was.

National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two more people, identified as Abdul Arbaz and Maulavi Mushfique Ahmed on August 2, in connection with the murder of Umesh Kolhe, reports The Indian Express. The place of arrest is not yet disclosed. Earlier, the NIA had arrested seven people in the case. “The arrested accused viz. Abdul Arbaz and Maulavi Mushfique Ahmed are criminal associates of earlier arrested accused persons, namely Irfan Shaikh, Shoaib Khan, Mudassir Ahmed, Aatif Rashid, Yusuf Khan, Abdul Toufiq and Shahrukh Pathan and one wanted accused namely Shamim Ahmed Firoj Ahmed,” the NIA said in a statement.

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) issued an alert for a possible terror attack by Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and other radical groups ahead of Independence Day on August 15, 2022, India Today reports on August 4. IB report says there is a threat from LeT, JeM and other radical groups. It has directed Delhi Police to put in place strict entry rules at Red Fort ahead of Independence Day on August 15. According to the report, Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) is provoking terrorist attacks by giving logistics support to Jaish and Lashkar terrorists. JeM and LeT are being instructed to target big leaders and important places. In the IB report, instructions have also been given for strict monitoring of the areas in Delhi where Rohingya, people of Afghanistan and Sudan are living.

The chargesheet against Tawheed Ahmad Shah, a resident of Aribagh-Machowa area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam District, was filed before the NIA special court in Lucknow in a case related to the attempts by the global terror organisation to recruit militants for AQIS.

There has been an increase in the cases registered by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the last few years, with over 400 cases registered since its inception, the Parliament was informed on August 3, reports Times Now. As many as eight cases were handed over to the NIA in 2009, 11 in 2010, 16 each in 2011 and 2012, 27 in 2013, 14 in 2014, 21 in 2015, 34 in 2016, 36 in 2017, 59 in 2018, 62 in 2019, 59 in 2020, 61 in 2021 and 49 in 2022 till July 29. The government, however, clarified, “The increase in registration of cases by the NIA over the years is mainly due to the enhanced capacity of NIA with the sanction of new Branch offices and the augmented scope of NIA.” 481 posts and ten new branch offices at Chandigarh, Ranchi, Imphal, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Patna, Jaipur, Bhopal, and Bhubaneswar have been sanctioned.

Ahead of the Independence Day, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) has issued an alert of a possible terror strike in the national capital, Delhi, and in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) by Islamist State (IS) affiliated new terror outfit 'Lashkar-e-Khalsa', reports The Sentinel. According to information, Lashkar-e-Khalsa has been specially formed by the IS to carry out terror activities in India, and Afghan fighters are part of the new outfit. A ten-page note has been issued as a terror advisory by the IB. Violent incidents in Rajasthan's Udaipur and Maharashtra's Amravati have been described in the report to show how the radical groups are active who can create riot-like situations. Apart from this, the IB has also mentioned about the assassination of former Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was attacked by an armed assailant. The IB has warned that such incidents can take place and hence during the Red Fort Tricolour hoisting programme of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, extra arrangements should be made.

Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested one person, identified as Parvez Zubair in a terror funding case on August 4, in Mumbai, reports news.webindia123.com. The arrest was made under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act- UAPA. A court has sent Zubair to ATS custody till August 10, 2022. Zubair has been accused of being in touch with Anees Ibrahim, the younger brother of fugitive Dawood Ibrahim and of conducting terror funding activities for Dawood Ibrahim. An ATS official said that Zubair has visited Dubai 54 times between 2014-2022.

Salim Qureshi, alias Salim Fruit, a member of the Dawood Ibrahim gang, was arrested on August 4, by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for suspectedly aiding the gang's terrorist activities, reports news9live.com. According to the NIA, he was a close associate of Chota Shakeel. According to the probe agency, Qureshi was actively involved in extorting large sums of money in Shakeel's name from property transactions and dispute settlements to raise terror funds in furtherance of terrorist activities of D Company. The NIA said Dawood Ibrahim and his associates engaged in terrorist and criminal activities such as smuggling, narco-terrorism, money laundering, circulation of counterfeit currency, raising terror funds, and working in active collaboration with international terrorist organisations such as Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Al Qaeda.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on August 5, conducted a search operation in Tamil Nadu in connection with the illegal drugs and arms trade in India and Sri Lanka case, reports Times Now. The counter-terror agency carried out raids at the residence of one suspect in Chengalpattu District in the case pertaining to activities of a Sri Lankan drug mafia. NIA said that the mafia is controlled by Gunashekharan and Pushparajah Khann who in association with Haji Salim, a drug and arms supplier based in Pakistan, have been operating in India and Sri Lanka in illegal drugs and arms trade for the revival of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in India and Sri Lanka. The NIA registered the case suo-motu on 8 July 2022. The agency said that it had seized digital devices and incriminating documents during the search.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on August 6, arrested a man, identified as Mohsin Ahmad from Batla House in Delhi on charges of being a suspected active member of the Islamic State (IS), reports The Indian Express. The is a resident of Bihar’s Patna. Ahmad was arrested after searches were conducted at his premises and elsewhere in a case pertaining to “online and on-ground activities of the ISIS” registered by the agency on June 25. “Accused Mohsin Ahmad is a radicalised and active member of ISIS. He has been arrested for his involvement in collection of funds for ISIS from sympathisers in India as well as abroad. He was sending these funds to Syria and other places in the form of cryptocurrency in order to further the activities of ISIS,” the NIA claimed in a statement on August 7 Hindustan Times adds that Mohsin is a second-year electrical engineering student of Jamia Millia Islamia University and he is charged for collecting funds for IS sympathisers in India and abroad. He was sending the collected funds to Syria and other places through crypto-currency, NIA added.

National Investigation Agency (NIA), on August 8, arrested two Bangladeshi nationals identified as Hamidullah and Mohammed Sahadat Hussain from Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), in the case relating to the arrest of six active militants of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), reports Times Now. Along with them, three illegal Bangladeshi immigrants were also held from Aishbagh, Bhopal, the agency said. According to agency reports citing the NIA spokesperson, the accused were found involved in propagating JMB ideology and motivating the youth to carry out jihad against India. The High Court has rejected the bail petitions of accused Atiq Ahmad and others in connection with the incident. The bench headed by Justice K. The Dadar Police in Mumbai registered an FIR against nine people, including Salim Qureshi, the brother-in-law of Dawood Ibrahim’s close aide Chhota Shakeel, on August 10, reports India Today. The FIR was filed on the basis of a complaint that the nine people forged documents to pay lower taxes on a property in Mumbai. Qureshi, who also goes by the name Salim Fruit, was earlier arrested by the National Investigative Agency (NIA) and is currently in NIA custody. The forgery case against Qureshi was filed by Mohammad Rafique Tambe who owns a building in the Null Bazar area of South Mumbai. He told the police that Qureshi and the other accused in the case cheated the state exchequer by using forged documents on the sale of a property to pay lower taxes.

The total number of attacks by extremist, insurgents and terrorists was 550, claimed the data. While the number of civilian deaths in terror attacks, by jihadists and others, was 35 in 2021, the number of deaths in attacks by “jihadi” terrorists has come down since 2017, when the term was first introduced in the NCRB report. Meanwhile, 53 people were killed by left-wing extremists (LWE) and three by “North-East insurgents”. Further, 254 mobile sets, 12 radio sets and 80 literatures were recovered from extremists, insurgents and terrorists, according to the data. The report added that recoveries from extremists, insurgents and terrorists accounted for only for 195 kg of a total of 1,42,914 kg of explosives recovered in the country in 2021.

Nearly 60 per cent of all Fake Indian Currency Note (FICN) seized in the year 2021 were of INR 2,000 denomination, the Crime in India 2021 report compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) shows, The Hindu reports on August 30. Of the total INR 20.39 crore FICN seized in 2021, INR 12.18 crore was in the denomination of INR 2,000. NCRB data shows that post 2016 there has been an increase in seizure of FICN. While in 2016, FICN worth INR 15.92 crore was seized, the seizures in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 stood at INR 28.10 crore, INR 17.95 crore, INR 25.39 crore, INR 92.17 crore and INR 20.39 crore, respectively. In 2015, before demonetisation, INR 15.48 crore in FICN was seized.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on August 29, filed a supplementary charge sheet against nine people including four Afghan nationals in the 3,000 kg heroin drug haul worth INR 21,000 crore at Mundra port, which was smuggled to India at the behest of Pakistan based terror groups, reports Hindustan Times.Those charge sheeted include four accused from Afghanistan – Jannat Gul Kaker, Mujahid Shinwari, Shami Ullah and Mohammad Lal Kaker; three from Punjab – Sarabjit Singh, Balwinder Singh and Jasvir Singh; and two from Rampur (Uttar Pradesh) – Imtiaz Ahmed and Imran Ahmed. “The accused charge sheeted on Monday are members of international drugs smuggling network involved in trafficking of heroin from Afghanistan to India for further distribution in Punjab, Delhi, Gujarat, UP and other states of India,” said the NIA in a statement.

The state of West Bengal has reported the highest number of Fake Indian Currency Note (FICN) cases in the country, as per the latest data released from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Business Today reports on August 30. The report highlighted that as West Bengal shares its border with Bangladesh and Nepal, the number of FICN cases in the past has always been high. It reported 208 cases of counterfeit bank and currency notes in 2019, whereas, in 2020, 109 cases were recorded. The data shows that West Bengal recorded 82 cases in 2021, followed by Assam with 75 such cases and Tamil Nadu was at the third spot with 62 cases. Overall, India reported 639 cases of counterfeit bank and currency notes in 2021. Other states with notable cases were Maharashtra with 55 cases, Rajasthan with 54 cases, and Uttar Pradesh with 42 cases.
