Ministry of Interior (MoI) Afghanistan spokesman Najib Danish confirmed on January 21 that 17 people had been killed and another nine injured by six Taliban militants in the attack on Kabul Intercontinental Hotel in Bagh-e-Bala area in Kabul (Kabul Province), the capital of Afghanistan, reports Pajhwok Afghan News. Zabihullah Mujahid, Taliban ‘spokesman’, informed through an e-mail, that five Taliban militants had in fact attacked the Hotel at around 10:00pm on January 20. He claimed a large number of foreign security personnel, guests and local guests were killed during the assault. Mujahid said the attack came to an end at around 11:00am January 21. Telecommunication and Information Technology Director for Farah Province, Jamaluddin Pachakhail; Afghan Consul General in Pakistan’s Karachi city, Abdullah Wahid Poyan; and the High Peace Council (HPC) spokesman, Ahmad Farzan; were among those killed in the attack, adds Tolo News. Also, according to Tolo News, 43 persons were killed that included 11 Kam Air employees all of whom were foreigners. Earlier, South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP) had reported on January 21 that two persons were killed in the same attack with no outfit claiming the attack.

103 persons were killed and another 235 injured in a suicide attack by Taliban militants near the old Ministry of Interior (MoI) building in Kabul City, the national capital, in Kabul Province, on January 27, reports Khaama Press. Militants managed to bypass the first checkpoint in two ‘ambulances’ one of which was an ‘escort vehicle’ and other laden with explosives, without raising suspicion and then parked the vehicle in the compound of the Jamhoriat Hospital for 20 minutes before detonating the bomb. Taliban ‘spokesman’ Zabiullah Mujahid claimed that most of the casualties of the attack were civilian and military staff of the MoI.The Afghan MoI Wais Ahmad Barmak confirmed the death toll and said that Afghan Police forces had suffered heavy casualties in the attack; though he did not disclose exact figure. He confirmed that among the injured there were 30 Policemen, adds Tolo News.Afghan Intelligence National Directorate of Security (NDS) Chief Masoom Stanikzai said that four persons had been arrested in connection with the attack in Kabul on January 27 and five in connection with the attack on Kabul Intercontinental Hotel on January 20, reports Tolo News on January 28. “Madrassas, training camps, and safe havens exist beyond Afghanistan's borders. 4,000 tons of explosives from Kunduz and Kapisa have been seized in the past month. Afghanistan does not have the capacity to produce explosives,” he said. The explosion happened at about 4.10pm [AST], on August 15, while students were in class. At least 67 people were also wounded. Mawoud Academy is a private education facility that provides tertiary education programs to students wanting to go to university. The academy is known for providing a high standard of education.
