Police on January 6 arrested a war crimes suspect at his Dhaka city home in Kafrul area, about an hour after the International Crimes Tribunal1 (ICT1) issued warrant of arrest against him, reports New Age. The suspect, Muhamad Emdadul Huq (78) of Sarail subDistrict in Brahmanbaria District, now resides in Dhaka city. According to prosecutor Rezia Sultana Chamon, Huq was the chief of local Peace Committee and committed crimes against humanity at different places in Sarail during the Liberation War.

Police arrested four suspected Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militants on March 21 from Dhaka city’s Kalyanpur bus stand area, reports Dhaka Tribune. Joint Security Force led by Army brought to end an unprecedented hostage situation rescuing 13 people who include Indian and Japanese citizens almost 12 hours after gunmen stormed the popular restaurant. Around 53 people, including several Policemen, were injured in an exchange of gunfire between Police and gunmen who stormed a Spanish restaurant on July 1 night and took the people inside hostage. One militant was arrested in the incident. According to US-based SITE Intelligence Group, Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility of the attack. His job was to monitor online activities of free-thinking bloggers and secular activists, identify possible targets and report to the 'military wing commander' of Ansar al-Islam. Khairul Islam is also a key suspect in the killing of blogger Niladri Chattopadhyay Niloy and publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan.He admitted monitoring activities of Niladri and Dipan and passing on the intelligence to sacked army major Syed Ziaul Haque, the military wing commander of the militant outfit.Known in the militant circle as Boro Bhai (big brother), Zia played a vital role in every targeted killing linked to Ansar al-Islam, said Abdul Baten, Joint Commissioner of Detective Branch of Police. Khairul, who was recruited in 2014 for his expertise in information technology, admitted meeting Zia for the last time on September 26 this year in some place on the outskirts of Dhaka.He told investigators that he had four to five men as teammates, and all of them were tasked with monitoring online activities of persons the outfit considered “anti-Islam”. Khairul was asked to follow Dipan and Niladri.With adequate info in hands following the monitoring, Zia instructed the operation wing to execute the targets. Khairul and his team monitored the victims until the operations were conducted. After the targets were executed, they uploaded a statement about the operation on their website. In the capital, Khairul received trainings in militant dens in phases -- in Shewrapara for two days, on Elephant Road for seven days and in Mohammadpur for several days.

The Detective Branch (DB) of Police arrested four men and seized seven firearms and ammunition from them in Dhaka city's Bashabo Buddist Temple area on November 13, reports Daily Star. Ferdous alias Fedu, Humayun Kabir alias Jhonu, Shohor Ali alias Liton alias Vangari Liton, and Manik, brought those arms -- four pistols, three one-shooter guns, eight magazines and 15 rounds of bullets -- from Benapole in Jessore District. Police from primary interrogation learned that one Amirul actually owns the arms. Humayun is an active member of an intra-district arms trade syndicate, said Police.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on November 16, arrested five leaders of a Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) faction, called “Sarwar-Tamim group”, reports Daily Star. The five, arrested in Dhaka city's Uttara and Adabor areas in separate incidents, include a trainer, an explosives expert and a finance coordinator, according to Mufti Mahmud Khan, Director of RAB's legal and media wing.Of the arrestees, Maulana Abdul Hakim Faridi alias Sufian, 40, and Razibul Islam alias Razib, 29, were captured in Uttara. While, Gazi Kamrus Salam Sohan alias Abdullah, 27, Sohel Rana alias Khadem alias Muazzin, 23, and Abu Saleh alias Liton alias Huraira, 42, were held in the city's Adabor. Sohan, a former student of Mirzapur Cadet College, completed B.Sc. in electrical and electronics engineering at Islamic University of Technology in Gazipur. Razibul is a former student of economics department at Dhaka College. All, except for Sohel, were leaders of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) before joining “Sarwar-Tamim group”, according to RAB. RAB recovered a pistol, 20 bullets, 10 crude bombs and bomb-making materials from their possession.
