At least 15 vehicles were vandalised, two were set ablaze, 35 homemade bombs exploded and three people were injured in Dhaka City alone. Some 30 persons, including four Policemen, were injured after leaders and cadres of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) clashed with Police in Dhaka city and Gaibandha District on January 24, reports The Daily Star. In Dhaka city, 12 cadres of JeI-ICS were injured and six of them arrested when Police intercepted procession brought out by JeI-ICS cadres. In Gaibandha District, clashes erupted when Police intercepted another procession brought out by JeI-ICS cadres at Station Bazar Road demanding immediate release of their detained leaders. At least 14 JeI-ICS cadres and four Policemen sustained injuries. Gaibandha Additional Superintendent of Police Mosharaf Hossain said the cadres in the procession were armed with various weapons.

At least three people were killed and many injured across the country on February 5 as Jamaat-e-Islam (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres enforced a dawn-to-dusk hartal (shut down) protesting the war crimes trial of its leader Abdul Quader Mollah, reports The Daily Star. In Chittagong District, two ICS cadres (Imran Khan and Afzal Hossain) and Shafiqu, a worker of Youngone factory were killed during a clash with Police. Police arrested 15 ICS cadres from the District.In capital Dhaka, the JeI-ICS cadres exploded 8-10 crude bombs when police obstructed them. A Police constable, Nur Nabi, was injured and 52 cadres were arrested from the city. In Comilla District, one JeI-ICS cadre was injured in Police firing. In Rajshahi District, about 10 cadres were injured in a clash with Police as they were intercepted by the law-enforcers. In Khulna District, Police arrested seven cadres from the Khulna city. In Sylhet District, 30 people, including a constable, were injured. In Satkhira District, three Policemen were injured.In Bogra District, Police arrested five cadres. Dhaka University students pushed an Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) leader off Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall's third floor and beat up two other leaders on February 10, reports The Daily Star. Rakib, the hall's ICS unit president and of political science department, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after being pushed off. Sanaullah Pritom, the hall's ICS unit general secretary and of law department; and Noki, the hall's ICS unit organising secretary and of development studies department; were handed over to Police. Students beat up the three who were posing as Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) cadres but the students found a list of ICS cadres in their rooms. Later, they admitted to be ICS leaders.

The JeI-ICS cadres carried out hit-and-run assault at Police, leaving at least 30 injuries. 73 JeI-ICS cadres were arrested in the city. Meanwhile, at least 65 people, including 14 Policemen, were injured in clashes between JeI-ICS cadres and the law enforcers in Satkhira, Noakhali and Khulna Districts on February 12. In Satkhira District, seven Policemen were wounded in attacks by the JeI-ICS cadres and Police arrested 103 cadres in the District. Abul Kashem (30), a member of the Railway Security Force, died when two young people exploded a crude bomb on his face on the platform at the Kamalapur Railway Station of Dhaka City. Two youths who were carrying the bomb were also injured in the blast. Police said two youths — Alam (18) and Aminul (16) — were entering the railway station through the rail tracks from a level crossing. As the two youths reached beat No 17 of the station, railway security guard Kashem challenged them. Sensing danger, Aminul hurled the bag containing the bomb at the face of Kashem and soon it went off with a big bang, killing Kashem on the spot and injuring Alam and Aminul themselves.

With the standoff between the Bangladesh government and the opposition over January 5 polls showing no sign of easing, a tight security blanket was thrown over Dhaka for a second day on December 30 and transport services were halted to thwart anti-government activists from entering the city, according to Economic Times. The capital Dhaka was effectively cut off from the rest of the country as bus, ferry and train services were suspended and roadblocks kept in place to prevent opposition BNP activists to reach the city.
