Two Neo Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) leaders were killed in a gunfight with Police in Dhaka city on January 6, reports The Daily Star. They are Nurul Islam Marzan, who allegedly coordinated the Gulshan café attack, and Saddam Hossain alias Rahul, who led Neo JMB activities in northern region. Police said that Marzan was next in the rank to top Neo JMB coordinator Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury while Saddam was wanted in at least 10 murder cases, including that for the killing of Japanese national Kunio Hoshi in Rangpur District. Police recovered a pistol, three bullets and a knife from the spot.

Unidentified assailants hacked Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) secretary of Phulbaria upazila (sub-district) unit in Mymensingh District on January 14, reports The Daily Star. The victim was identified as Sarwar Hossain (27), son of Abdur Rashid of Bhalukjan village. Rifat Khan Rajib, Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of Phulbaria Police Station, said a group of five to six miscreants hacked Sarwar indiscriminately at upazila headquarters around 6:00pm, leaving him critically injured. The miscreants fled immediately, he said.

NeoJama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) leader Jahangir Alam alias Rajib Gandhi (32) before a Dhaka court on January 23 confessed to plotting the Gulshan café attack, reports The Daily Star. Rajib told the court that he planned the crime with some other top leaders but was not physically present in the attack. He also admitted that he recruited operatives in the militant outfit.On July 1, 2016, the Gulshan café attack had left 22 people killed. Jahangir Alam is the only mastermind behind the attack arrested alive on January 14 in Tangail District. Several others including NeoJMB top coordinator Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury was killed in separate Police raids in Dhaka and elsewhere.

Trafficking of drugs, arms and ammunition from India, trespassing the border, development works within 150 yards of the international border, setting up of an effluent treatment plant (ETP) in the Indian side of Akhaura Integrated Check Post (ICP) and exchange of information about smugglers and criminals would also come up for discussion at the meeting at the BGB headquarters in Pilkhana. The imam of an Ahmadiyya mosque in Mymensingh District was critically injured after being hacked inside the mosque by a group of three men in a suspected militant attack on May 8, reports Dhaka Tribune. Imam Mostafizur Rahman (35) of Khanpur mosque in Ishwarganj area was hacked by the assailants indiscriminately with sharp weapons inside the mosque. The attackers tried to flee as locals came to his rescue. One of the three attackers, Ahad, has been arrested by the locals. Police, however, did not say anything about the motive of the attack.

A ‘regional leader’ of Purbo Banglar Communist Party’s (PBCPML) Lal Pataka (Red Flag) faction and his aide were killed in a “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Goalanda upazila (subDistrict) of Rajbari District on may 13 (today), reports Daily Star. The deceased were identified as Rakibul Hasan Roky alias Bappi (35) regional leader and his aide Lalon Mollah (40). Judge KM Imrul Kayes of the Special Judge Court-6 of Dhaka also handed down the same sentence to two other members - Abdullah Hel Kafi and his wife Ayesha Akhter - of the banned outfit in a case filed for planning subversive activities in May 2010. On May 25, 2010, Police arrested Saidur and two others from a house in the Dhaka city's East Dania area. During the raid, they also recovered a huge cache of bomb-making materials, firearms and ammunition and jihadi books.

Police recovered the body of ASP Mizanur Ranman Talukder (50) from near Birualia Bridge around possibly dumped by the assailants after killing him at some other place. Dhaka High Court sentenced three Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militants to different terms of imprisonment in a case filed for bombs blasts in Farmgate, Dhaka city during a series bomb blasts across the country on August 17, 2005, reports Dhaka Tribune. The convicts are Abdullah-al-Fattah Shakil, Mohamad Tarek Iqbal and Mohamad Rezaul Karim Reza. Shakil and Reza were given 17 years in jail and fined BDT 50,000 each, in default of which they would have to serve six months more in prison. Iqbal was awarded eight years of imprisonment and fined BDT 50,000, in default of which he would have to serve six months more in jail.

The fugitives are ASM Faizullah (66), Abdur Razzak Mandal (64), Alim Uddin Khan (77), Abdul Latif (58), Nurul Amin Shahjahan (69) and Sirajul Islam (66). Other five accused of the case are now in jail. They are Khalilur Rahman Mir alias Khalilur Rahman (62), Mohammad Samsuzzaman alias Abul Kalam (65), Mohammad Abdullah (62), Mohammad Abdul Malek Akand alias Abul Hossain (68) and Mohammad Rois Uddin Azadi alias Akkel Ali (74). In his observations, presiding judge, Justice Mohamad Shawkat Hossain called it ‘a historic case about pre-planned massacre of 57 brilliant Army officers, then serving BDR on deputation, by some ambitious BDR sepoys during their 30-hour mutiny spanning February 25 and 26, 2009’. During the mutiny which began shortly after the BDR Director General stood to deliver his speech at the Durbar Hall of the BDR headquarters, the mutineers gunned down their commanders.
