Some 30 persons, including four Policemen, were injured after leaders and cadres of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) clashed with Police in Dhaka city and Gaibandha District on January 24, reports The Daily Star. In Dhaka city, 12 cadres of JeI-ICS were injured and six of them arrested when Police intercepted procession brought out by JeI-ICS cadres. In Gaibandha District, clashes erupted when Police intercepted another procession brought out by JeI-ICS cadres at Station Bazar Road demanding immediate release of their detained leaders. At least 14 JeI-ICS cadres and four Policemen sustained injuries. Gaibandha Additional Superintendent of Police Mosharaf Hossain said the cadres in the procession were armed with various weapons.

At least 41 persons were injured in clashes between the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) cadres and the Police in the dawn-to-dusk general strike called by BNP on February 4 in 16 northern Districts of Bangladesh, reports New Age. 30 people were injured in Thakurgaon District, eight in Sirajganj District, two in Jaipurhat District and one woman in Bogra District. The opposition BNP called the general strike demanding the release of its acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and party leader Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu and withdrawal of the cases filed against them. All motorised vehicles remained off the roads and shops, markets and commercial establishments remained closed during the general strike in the 16 Districts. Banks, Government offices and educational institutions, however, remained open with a low transactions and thin attendance.

25 persons were injured in sporadic clashes between the Police and Jamaat-e-Islam (JeI)-Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres in Dhaka, Chittagong, Barisal and Rangpur Districts on February 13, reports The Daily Star. Law enforcers detained 415 people in Dhaka, Chittagong and Rangpur in connection with the vandalism and attacks on Police. In Dhaka city, at least 20 people, including an additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, were injured in the clashes. About 150 JeI-ICS cadres were arrested from the city. In Chittagong District, JeI-ICS cadres vandalised at least eight buses and two covered vans. The Police arrested eight JeI-ICS cadres after combing through the Chittagong city. In Barisal District, at least five persons were injured and three of the cadres were arrested from the Barisal city. In Rangpur District, Police arrested 13 cadres from Mithapukur sub-District after a clash.

At least 40 persons were killed as Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres clashed with law enforcers across the country on February 28 centering on the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) verdict that sentenced JeI leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee to death penalty on February 28 on charges of war crimes he had committed in 1971, reports New Age. Seven were killed in Rangapur District, six including four Policemen in Gaibandha District, five in Satkhira District, four in Thakurgaon District, four including one Policeman in Chittagong District, two each in Sirajganj, Cox’s Bazar, Chapainawabganj and Noakhali Districts and one each in Dhaka, Dinajpur, Moulvibazar, Natore, Bogra and Rajshahi Districts. More than 2,000 people were also injured in the clashes according to the Police and hospital officials. Most of the casualties are reported to have been caused by firing by the Police, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

Five people, including a teenage boy, were killed and 17 others injured as Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres clashes with law enforcers across the country on the concluding day of two-day hartal on March 4, reports The Daily Star. In Satkhira District, JeI-ICS cadres blocked the Kalaroa-Sarashikatki road with logs and attacked Police when the law enforcers reached the spot. The Police opened fire in which two brothers - Arif Billah (40) and Ruhul Amin (35) - died on the spot and Shamsur Rahman (42) died at Satkhira Sadar Hospital. Two others cadres got injured. In Sirajganj District, a teenage boy was killed when Police opened fire in the face of attacks by JeI-ICS cadres in Ullapara sub-District. The deceased was identified as Mahfuz. At least 15 people were also injured. In Rangpur District, a JeI-ICS cadre, who sustained bullet injury during February 28’s clashes at Mithapukur town, succumbed to his injury on March 4. In Chittagong District, JeI-ICS cadres set fire to an abandoned train engine at Chittagong Railway Station. Security officials of the station doused the fire and managed to catch one of the miscreants. They handed him to the Police.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)’s dawn-to-dusk hartal (general shut down) was marked by incidents of vandalism, arson and explosion and clash with law enforcers and ruling party activists across the country on March 5. In Satkhira Districrt, 45-year-old Shukur Ali, a member of Awami League (AL) executive committee, was killed, hours after being injured in an attack at the office of Kalaroa sub-District. Three AL cadres were also injured in the attack. In Bhola District, at least 50 people were wounded in a clash between BNP and AL cadres as the two groups took to streets for and against the hartal. In Netrokona District, at least 20 people were wounded when BNP activists vandalised and set fire to vehicles. In Rangpur District, at least 20 people, including two cameramen, were injured in a clash between supporters of AL and BNP at Rangpur city market. In Barisal District, as many as 11 people were injured in Barisal city when BNP men locked in clash with Police and ruling party men. In Lalmonirhat District, at least 10 people, including seven AL cadres, were injured in a clash with BNP supporters. In Narayanganj District, at least 10 people, including BNP District unit president Taimur Alam Khandaker, were injured during clashes between BNP men and Police. In Chittagong District, at least 10 people were injured. In Brahmanbaria District, at least five people, including one Policeman, were injured in a chase and counter chase between law enforcers and pickets. Mozahar Ali, a constable of Pirgachha Police Station in Rangpur District, succumbed to his injuries. Ali was critically injured in the head on February 28. The BNP-led 18-party alliance had enforced the shutdown to press for its demands, including the immediate release of its arrested leaders and activists. In Dhaka city, cadres of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) the student wing of BNP and Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) brought out processions in support of the hartal and exploded 19 homemade bombs creating panic in the city. Police fired blank shots to bring the situation under control. In Noagaon District, at least 25 people were injured in a triangular clash between law enforcers, BNP and AL activists at Prosadpur Bazar. In Dinajpur District, 12 persons including five Policemen were injured as BNP men clashed with Police in the morning. Police arrested six JCD-ICS cadres. In Narayanganj District, five persons were injured during a clash between hartal supporters and Police in the morning. In Gazipur District, a journalist and four others were injured in a clash between Police and hartal supporters in front of Hossain Market. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) recovered 10 crude bombs from the possession of Anwaruzzaman Anwar, joint convener of BNP’s Mohanagar committee. In Cox's Bazar District, a bus helper sustained burn injuries when miscreants set fire to his vehicle in Teknaf sub-District. The victim, Khairul Bashar, was asleep inside the parked bus when it was torched. In Pabna District, a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of Awami Laegue (AL) was allegedly beaten by Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres in Ishwardi sub-District. In Bogra Dsitrict, 10 blockaders were arrested during the joint forces’ drives in different areas of the District. In Lalmonirhat District, members of the joint forces arrested nine JeI-ICS Cadres from Kafir Bazar in Patgram sub-District for their alleged involvement in violence and acts of sabotage during blockades. In Chittagong District, JeI-ICS Cadres brought out a flash procession in Khatiber Bari area and hurled two crude bombs targeting a Police van.
