The Army has again been called out on February 16 in six divisions to help the police in combating crime. 150 soldiers have been deployed in each division to patrol crime-prone areas and arrest criminals, but troops have not been given the power to interrogate. Joint teams of security forces, on February 17, arrested Abdul Gafur Mollah, chairman of the Jalma union of Baitaghata, along with 16 others from Banda village of Dumuria subdivision, media sources reported. Mollah is reportedly a leader of the outlawed left wing extremist Biplabi Communist Party. The Army was previously deployed during the drive against criminals and terrorists with the launching of Operation Clean Heart on October 17, 2002. It was later withdrawn on January 9, 2003.
