Both were taken there for the recovery of illegal arms when the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) party was attacked by the GMF cadres. The arrested leaders tried to escape and were reportedly killed in the crossfire. Two RAB personnel were injured and three rifles and 18 bullets were recovered from the incident site.

Ali was arrested on January 13 and was reportedly taken to the village for the recovery of illegal arms when the RAB team was attacked by his accomplices. Ali died while trying to escape. On January 17, Didarul Islam Palash alias Shyamal, ‘operational commander’ of the Khulna Metropolitan city unit of Purba Banglar Communist Party’s (PBCP) Janajuddha faction was killed in a shootout with police personnel at Sonadanga in Khulna district. Police recovered a gun, 58 rifle bullets, 13 pistol bullets, and five gun cartridges from the encounter site. He was earlier arrested on January 16 along with three women PBCP cadres from the Sonadanga Residential Area. Official sources stated that the arrested women are members of a suicide squad formed to avenge the killings of top PBCP leaders in ‘crossfire’.

Following their confessional statement, the police on February 2 took the two to Bichalandi to recover firearms hidden by them, when PBCP cadres reportedly opened fire on the police personnel. In the ensuing encounter, Saleh and Shariful were killed and Sub-Inspector Asif Uddin and three constables of Santhia Police Station were injured.
