Normal life was affected and a bike was set on fire on the first day of the 100-hour bandh (shutdown strike) called by the Peoples’ Joint Action Committee for Boroland Movement since midnight March 1, reports The Telegraph. The committee has called the bandh in the proposed Bodoland area, comprising Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) and adjoining tribal-dominated areas, in protest against the State Government’s “lackadaisical” attitude towards their demand for a separate state under Articles 2 and 3 of the Constitution. The committee also wants the Centre to hold a dialogue with the Pro-Talks faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-PTF) at the highest political level.

Both the incidents were reported in Kokrajhar District. PJACBM is demanding the creation of Bodoland state comprising Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) and adjoining tribal-dominated areas, under Articles 2 and 3 of the Constitution, which is not supported by State Government. PJACBM also wants the Centre to hold a dialogue with the Pro-Talks faction of National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB-PTF) at the highest political level.

Mritunjay Debnath, who was injured in the firing, died of his injuries in a private nursing home in Bongaigaon on April 30. Mritunjay and Satan Debnath were injured when unidentified gunmen fired at them.

A 12-hour rail blockade by the Biswajit Roy faction of the All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) paralysed train services in lower Assam on June 17, reports The Telegraph. AKRSU activists stranded the Rajdhani Express and Bangalore Express at New Bongaigaon railway station, the Intercity Express at Chautara near Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district and the BG passenger train at Fakiragram. They also blocked movement of various trains at Nalbari, Barpeta and Bijni. A source in the railway’s Rangiya division said the blockades disrupted train services for over seven hours. The protesters demanded a separate Kamtapur state and Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Koch Rajbongshi community.

The Kokrajhar District witnessed a bandh (shut down) on July 15 following the news of the36–hour Assam bandh being called by IK Songbijit faction of National democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-IKS) was published in an Assamese daily, reports The Sentinel. All the Government offices and business establishments remained closed. However, the NDFB –IKS, however later, clarified that they did not call a bandh. The bandh has affected normal life in the District along with other parts of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC). The shops, markets and all business establishments as well as transport and other means of communications were disrupted.BR Farenga, ‘spokesman’ of the NDFB-IKS, in a telephonic conversation, clarified that the bandh was not called by their organization.
